Research
During my research I looked at a range of different rock music videos as well as a handful from other genres and a number of albums too.
I then analysed the videos and as a group we analysed the covers and created a video, here is the link-

Because our genre was Rock, there were so many music videos and digipacks to look at. Here are some covers which we took some inspiration from-
Initial ideas
We had a number of initial ideas, mine can be found on my blog.
We chose the final piece as we believed that it reflected our band image, it matches the criteria that we set for ourselves which was having all the products link and that it suit our genre as well.
These our groups initial ideas-
Our Aim For Our Digipak
We wanted all of the digipak products to have features, i.e. similar texts and pictures.
This was common with other rock bands such as Skillet, a band which we took a lot of inspiration from. They had a connection between all of their products.
On the next slide you will see how our digipak is similar to their one.
White Background
Same Text
Same Picture
Dark Colours
Similar Images
All of our products link with each other. They have Amir on them however all the images are not the same.
They all have a dark tone to them, having black as the background on all but one product (the poster).
They all have similar texts on the pieces with the Black Rose title text being the exact same.
The band’s symbol can be found on all of the pieces expect the CD, this is because we wanted the CD cover to be as simplistic as possible and wanted the attention to be focused on the blood splashes.
The Font
We found a good font on the internet that we thought symbolises our band and felt that it was unique to us. I think that it made our album, CD and advert look more realistic as it matches the rock genre.
Conventions
On our cover it is fairly easy to identify that the genre is rock this is because Amir is seen to be angry and aggressive and gives a gothic heavy metal feel. This is achieved through-
- Dark colours
- The way Amir is focused on the cover
- Fire
All of these factors are identifiable in the rock genre most covers seem to have a dark sinister feel to them which is achieved through the images, colours and text just as we have done with ours.
Links with music video and ancillary tasks
There are several clear links between the main task and the ancillary task.
Amir was the star image in both narrative and performance elements of the video and so we used him as the only person on all of our products.
On the covers he is dressed in the same attire as in the music video and on the poster he is wearing the same two costumes.
It is common in the rock genre for the main singer to be on the cover as done with Skillet.
Star ImageAmir is the main focus in both the music video and also the ancillary tasks. We decided that we would have him as the only band member on the digipacks as he will be noticed as the main persona and therefore will help the band establish themselves.
It is common within rock genres to have the band on the cover however we challenged this convention by only having Amir.
Amir was wearing the same clothes on the poster and the album cover as he was in the music video this allowed for people to recognise him clearly.
