• Laws are rules that all citizens must live by• The purpose of government is to make laws

LEVELS OF GOVERNMENT• The purpose of government is to make laws• There are three levels of government:
1) Federal (the government of the country)• Our federal government meets in parliament buildings in our capital city,
Ottawa2) Provincial/Territorial (the government of the
provinces/territories)• Our provincial government meets in Victoria3) Local (the government of towns and cities)• Chilliwack has its own mayor and city council

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
• All of Canada is broken up into sections called ridings (338 of them!)• One man or woman is
elected from each riding• These people are called
Members of Parliament (MPs)• MPs meet in the
parliament buildings in Ottawa where they discuss government business
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT (PT. 2)• The Parliament is divided into two houses:
1) The House of Commons• This is made up of all of the MPs• They discuss and make laws
2) The Senate• This is made up of senators (they are not elected)• These people review laws and try to make sure that no unfair laws are made
