How is Age represented in the sequence from skins? To what extent are these representaions stereotypical?
Young people are stereotyped as being vain and that they care a lot about their apperance. The screen shot above is an over the shoulder shot , showing his refletion in the mirror. Tony is ”checking himself out” which gives the impression that teenagers are vain.
Older people are stereotyped as being grumpy and moody when Tony’s dad comes in and is shouting and swearing at Tony because his music is on. He also continues to behave this way when he walks down to eat his breakfast. This lives up to the whole “gumpy man” stereotype, which concludes that all middle ages
men, are rude and grumpy. The screen shot above shows him yelling at his son. A mid shot is used to convey this.
The screen shot above shows a teenager in bed , delibertaley not responding to a phone call so that he can stay in bed longer. This stereotypes teengagers as being lazy. The mess in his room illustrates this sterotype further , that teenagers are lazy and messy people. It’s a high angle shot which shows the extent of how messy the room is , mise-‐en-‐scene suchas dirty plates help to show this. The dark lighting make the room appear dingy , but the light on the bed , hows the light trying to seep in from the certains. This shows that it is morning time and the teengager shouldbe up , highlighting his laziness further.
The shot above shows Tony’s sister coming home after she was out last night The use of the long shot draws attension to the clothes she wears, which are
fairly revealing . When she gets to her house she gets her brother to turn music on to cause a distraction , so that she can sneak in. Because Tony knows exactly what to do it implies that this has happened before. The fact that she doesn’t want to get caught shows that she was doing something she shouldn’t have done. This highlights a poor relationship between teenagers and their parents. It also stereotypes teenagers as being rebellious or naughty and contantly doing things such as drinking.
