How are personal trainers making six-figures through their online training programs?

They’re mastering the psychology of marketing and using it to turn their followers into online clients.

Personal trainers who want to make money online need to showcase their knowledge, interact with their followers, and right hook followers into becoming clients.

Marketing is a game of psychology. It’s playing on psychological levers that build trust and establish you as an authority figure that people want to give their money too.

How do you build trust and authority?

By showing you know what you’re talking about.

As a personal trainer, you have two levers: your clients and your knowledge. The before and after photos of client results is going to be the trust and authority builder that converts followers to clients. Your knowledge is going to place you as top of mind for people interested in an online workout program.

Educational posts can be graphics with information or lifestyle photos of you with informative captions.

For example, @Nutrition_Facts_Org uses data and statistics overlayed on professional stock photos as their educational posts:

• Use Canva.com to create a template, choose a background and copy and paste the information you want to write on the graphic

@EarnYourBooze uses lifestyle photos to promote their fitness movement. Here’s an example of one of their posts aimed at educating people on their potential to improve their lives through fitness:

• Hire a photographer to come to one of your classes, private training sessions, take photos of you working out, and/or photos of you making meals. Average cost is $3/photo (you’ll be able to choose the photos you want to keep and only pay for those—not every photo taken)

• Have a friend take photos with a camera or a smartphone. If you don’t have access to professional camera gear, use these free apps to edit your photos

• VSCO: Use filters to brand your lifestyle photos. You can pay $19.99 for a year long membership to access all of their filters

• Snapseed: Detailed photo editing (selective editing, retouch, photoshop, etc.)

#2: Interact With Your Followers

Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and every other social media platform runs on an algorithm. The algorithm isn’t something intimidating. It’s a simple concept of learning how to play by social media rules to get heard above the noise.

The algorithm determines which users see posts based on their interests and the post’s engagement. One of the biggest trending topics in social media marketing right now is social proof—the people that like and comment on a post, the more the algorithm favors it. For example, if your post gets 100+ comments, Instagram recognizes this post as one users like. They’ll promote it to other users interested in the content. If your account gets 100+ DMs, Instagram sees users like interacting with your account. They’ll promote it in the algorithm.

You can even double this social proof. Responding to each comment and post makes Instagram and Facebook see double the engagement. You’re going to hack the algorithm into organically promoting your content to more users.

Algorithm aside, let’s talk about psychology again. Prospective clients will favor a personal trainer who they have interacted with over one they’ve never talked to. Each follower that opens up a conversation with you through comments or DM’s is a potential client.

#3: Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook

This is Gary Vee’s way of saying, give, give, give, ask. His content gives. He answers questions, shows his day through vlogs, and tells people how to be as successful as him.

Then, what happens when he has a book launch, or starts a podcast, or opens a new Instagram account?

He asks his audience to pre-order the book. He asks them to rate his podcast. He asks them to go and follow his new account.

This idea of giving before asking circles back to building authority and trust with your followers. Think about an Instagram account you unfollowed because they consistently tried to sell you things.

Did you ever consider buying from them? No—because they asked you to buy too many times.

Instead of creating content promoting your online fitness program, you want to create content that gives first and asks second. Build a relationship with followers and when you ask them to take part in your program, they’ll be more likely to buy.

For example, here’s a give, give, give, right hook strategy to get more sign-ups for your personal training program.

Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday have a Facebook live and/or Instagram live mini work-out.

Mini work-out must do’s:

• Create a hashtag• Go live at the same time every day of the week. Ask your followers when the best time is for them• Call out followers by name as they come on the livestream • Post to IGTV after for everyone that can’t make the live • MOST IMPORTANT: End the work out by talking about your training program. For example, “This mini

work-out is a great start but if you want to double your results, you can sign up for a free trial of my training program. I’ll put the link in my Instagram bio if you’re interested. It’s $X a month and you’ll get a specialized workout and nutrition program from me. What’s awesome about my nutrition program is if you don’t like one of the ingredients or foods in your meal, you can swap it out without messing up your intake for that day. I did this purposely because there is no such thing as a one size fits all training program, each program is designed for every client. If you’re interested the link is in my bio. Every mini workout is a “jab” and your “right hook” is the end of your livestream when you tell people about your personal training program.
