How to setup Thecus NAS as storage repositories on Hyper-V via iSCSI

Note: 1. Please make sure that an iSCSI Target has been created on the Thecus NAS and is ready for

2. On the iSCSI Initiator, its best to reserve network cards for storage duties only, and they can not

be used for any other purpose.

Connect Windows Server 2008 R2 to iSCSI target by i SCSI Initiator 1. Click on Start Menu , then select Administrative Tools > iSCSI Initiator .

2. If this is your first time to start iSCSI Initiator, you will see a message window which announces

you to start the iSCSI Initiator service.

3. In the iSCSI Initiator, under the Targets tab, you can enter the IP address of the NAS in the

Target: box, then press Quick Connect… button.

4. In the Quick Connect window you can check that which iSCSI target is connected to Windows

Server, then press Done button.

5. Back to the Targets tab, you will see the iSCSI target which is connected is shown on this

window, then just press OK button.

6. Go to Server Manager and select Storage > Disk Management , and system will find the

iSCSI target as a disk. If your iSCSI target is a brand new one, the system will ask you to

initialize it. If your iSCSI target is larger than 2TB, you must h ave to choose GPT; If the

iSCSI target is equal or smaller than 2TB, you can choose both MBR or GPT partition style.

7. After initialized the disk, the disk will be online but still unallocated. Now please right click on

the volume and select New Simple Volume .

8. Please assign a drive letter to your drive. In this example we set it to drive T.

9. Please format the volume with NTFS and enter the volume label you need. Notice that

please remember check the Preform a quick format option, or it will cost too much time to

format.

10. After formatting, you will see that the drive is ready to use.

Use iSCSI drive as the storage repository of Hyper- V 1. Here are two ways to start Hyper-V Manager. The one is click on Start Menu , then select

Administrative Tools > Hyper-V Manager ; The other on is open Server Manager , then

select Roles > Hyper-V > Hyper-V Manager . In this example, we will show that start it from

Server Manager.

2. Right Click on your Hyper-V server and select Hyper-V Settings... .

3. Set the default server location to the iSCSI drive. For this example, we set the iSCSI drive as

drive T, so we set the default location to drive T.

Install virtual machine with Hyper-V 1. In Hyper-V Manager, click on your Hyper-V server, select New in the Action window at right

side and select Virtual Machine... .

2. In New Virtual Machine Wizard, first of all, please use a name to identify this VM. For this

example. Because we will install Fedora 13, so we name it as Fedora13.

3. Please specify the amount of memory to allocate to this VM. Notice that you need to keep

enough memory for your original OS working.

4. You can configure a network adapter to use a virtual network or let it remain disconnected.

5. Please select an option to install the operation system or install later. Here we use a CD to

install the OS.

6. After finishing the New VM Wizard settings, you can see a new VM is shown in the central

window in Hyper-V Manager. Please right click on the new VM and select Connect... to open

the window of this VM.

7. Click the Start button to boot the VM.

8. Follow the instructions of your OS to install it.
