How to Tag and Track Your Facebook Ads
with Google Analytics
Tracking your stats and knowing your numbers when paying for advertising is essential. Without
properly tracking your stats, you are playing the guessing game. You will not be able to make educated
decisions on what to do next. You will not know which ads are performing and which are not.
Although you can track your Facebook ads with the Facebook pixel, it is not always 100 percent
accurate. It’s always good practice to have another tracking system in place. Tag and track your
Facebook ads with Google Analytics. Google Analytics is a great free tool from Google that allows you to
track your ad performance and help you scale your campaigns.

To link Google Analytics with your SunFrog account, you need to set up your Website in Google
Analytics.

How to Set Up Your Website in GOOGLE ANALYTICS:
– To get your property/tracking ID, login to your Google Analytics account
– Go to Admin > “Create New Account”
– Enter your account name
– Enter your Website name
– Enter your Website URL
– Select a suitable category
– Select a time zone
– Agree with Google Analytics Terms & Conditions
– Click “Get Tracking ID” button

– Your new property has been created in Google Analytics
– To get your “Property/Tracking ID,” go to “Admin”
– Under property (2nd column), click “Tracking Info > Tracking Code”)

Here you can see your “Tracking ID”
Copy/Paste your “Tracking ID”
– Now it’s time to link Google Analytics with your SunFrog account
– Login to your SunFrog account
– Click “Google Analytics” under “Traffic”
– Paste your Website’s “Property/Tracking ID” here and click “Save”

HOW TO TAG YOUR FACEBOOK AD:
Method 1: Using Google Chrome Google Analytics URL Builder Plugin:
In this method, we’re going to use a Google Chrome Plugin called “Google Analytics URL Builder.”
Click here to install this plugin “Google Analytics URL Builder.”
Once installed, an icon will be added to Google Chrome browser like this:
Click the icon and it will open a pop-up box like this:
– Enter your SunFrog URL in “URL to Share”
– Source: Enter “facebook” in this field. (This is case sensitive, so make sure you enter just like this.)
– Medium: Enter “cpc” in this field. (This is case sensitive, so make sure you enter just like this. It
will always be cpc.)

– Content: This field will help differentiate your ads. You can enter your target audience or
something relevant; for example: “female2534mobileppeilovebeagles”
o Target Audience: Female
o Age Group: 25-34
o Ad Type: Mobile/PPE
o Product: I Love Beagles
– Campaign: Here you can enter your campaign; for example:
“sunfrog_ppe_beagle_christmas_tshirts”
– Click “Copy” button to copy your new link
Sample URL:
Your link will look like this:
https://www.sunfrog.com/diesel-mechanics-funny-tool-t-
shirt.html?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=female2534mobileppeilovebeagles
&utm_campaign=sunfrog_ppe_beagle_christmas_tshirts
See how your URL is tagged.
Now you can start sending traffic to this link you just generated.

Method 2: Using Dimitris’ Excel Sheet:
The above method can be time consuming, so I’ve made a Google spreadsheet for you.
Download spreadsheet to your computer.
Now open the spreadsheet.
– Enter your SunFrog URL in “URL to Share”
– Source: Enter “facebook” in this field. (This is case sensitive, so make sure you enter just like this)
– Medium: Enter “cpc” in this field. (This is case sensitive, so make sure you enter just like this. It
will always be cpc.)
– Content: This field will help differentiate your ads. You can enter your target audience or
something relevant; for example: “female2534mobileppeilovebeagles”
o Target Audience: Female
o Age Group: 25-34
o Ad Type: Mobile/PPE
o Product: I Love Beagles
– Campaign: Here you can enter your campaign; for example:
“sunfrog_ppe_beagle_christmas_tshirts”
Now Copy/Paste this URL. (Formulas in this spreadsheet will automatically insert “source, medium,
content, and campaign” into your URL.
URL generated here will be exactly the same as generated using method 1.
You can send traffic to this URL.
Make sure you don’t change the formula in column “F.”

If you have multiple ad sets, then you can copy/paste your rows and update “Ad Content” in each row.

How to Verify if Link is Tracking Fine?
– You can verify this in Google Analytics
– Open the link in a browser and Google Analytics will track the activity
– Under “Reporting” go to “Acquisition > Campaigns > All Campaigns”

Here you can see all the traffic for each campaign.
Click on a particular campaign to see the details.
Here you can also filter by “Secondary Dimensions – Ad Content” to see report based on your “Ad
Content.”
Here is the actual process to see how your ad content is performing.
When you have Facebook ads reporting open, you’ll be able to see the cost of Facebook ads.
By following these methods, you can create as many ad contents as you like and check performance of
your ad content. This will help you scale.
