Dear Friends in Christ, It’s with a jumbled mixture of emotions, from gratitude to disappointment, that I write to tell you that I am resigning my call to serve as your pastor. I will be with you until

Sunday April 25th. In that time frame I will work with council to finish the ministries that were started in my time here. Our confirmation students who would have normally affirmed their baptism last fall will do so on April 25th for example. A new interim pastor will take the baton from me and serve Christ Lutheran in this time of transition. It is still a time of transition. Her name is Sandy Johnson and she is from River Falls. I believe that she will be keen to develop meaningful relationships with you and explore with you ways to engage in ministry. I hope you will surround her with the same affection with which you received me and that you will find ways to take charge of ministry in this place. Using Ephesians 4: 11-13 as guide, a pastor’s task is to equip the saints (you all) for the work of ministry. For me, as an interim pastor, the task was to prepare the way for a settled pastor. Ideally, the task involves untangling any administrative messes and helping the congregation define themselves clearly. Mostly I feel as though I have let you down, and for that I am genuinely sorry. My only defense is that the part-time nature of the call leaves little time to attend to the multitude of tasks that require attention here. I hope and pray that your new interim pastor will find ways to prioritize and delegate. And I hope you will support her in that. Our intention at the beginning of my interim call was for us to concentrate a little on renewal of the congregation and then turn to focusing on calling a new pastor. Well, I don’t know how I did at that either. You must be the judge of that. From my perspective, things seemed pretty unstable, or unsure on my arrival here. So, in my time with you we have switched back to a more traditional liturgy on Sunday morning. At the same time, we have tried to revitalize the Wednesday worship service. Again, you must decide, but my sense was that Wednesday was a mixed success. There was attention paid to enriching and developing relationships, which was good. However, there was never a sense of good order for me, and our numbers were always small. (growing edges.) The transition team seems to be finding their footing and leading you in fruitful conversation. However, there are too few of you who are participating. Christ Lutheran may be on the cusp of making some momentous decisions about your future and all members have a right and responsibility to share their perspective. Though the model for how we “do” church is changing- we cannot be a community of faith without our members participating in all aspects of our life together. Call me old fashioned, but I believe our life together depends on and grows out of the time we spend together in worship. So, as I prepare to leave you, let me encourage you to dedicate yourselves to participating in the worship life of this congregation. Finally, I am grateful. I am grateful for the two years that we have had together. I hope that you are aware in some small way, how much I have come to love this congregation as the people of God in this place. Yet, it is because of my high regard for you that I feel my time

Page 3: hrist Lutheran hurch

Page 3

with you must end. This is a time of transition for Christ Lutheran. My leadership here is not breathing excitement and hope for something new. My leadership has continued to stabilize what has always been. I would like to have been more engaged with your leaders. Perhaps time constraints did not allow that, but I’d like you to know that is one of my regrets. I plan to take a month or so to recharge my batteries before looking for another interim call. I feel that I have learned a great deal about the dynamics of interim ministry in my time with you. What I’ve learned will improve my ministry to the church in the future. For that I and the church are in your debt. As you continue to wrestle with tough questions concerning what the ministry of Christ Lutheran Church will look like in the future, I know that God will be with you. And I ask that God might richly bless you and guide you. Peace, Pastor Doug Steinke

Bishop Laurie Skow-Anderson’s Easter Message

Crosses We Don’t Choose Then Jesus told them, “… take up their cross and follow me.” Matthew 16:24b

Dear Members and Friends of the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin, My friend Julie’s mom had dementia. Julie picked up that cross and carried it as her beloved mother faded away. Paul was in second grade when he was diagnosed with diabetes. It was a cross he would carry for the rest of his life. Erica’s drug addiction was a cross she and her family carried for years until she found sobriety. They were all crosses they didn’t choose. Jesus carried his cross on the road to his crucifixion. Along the way he falls, and a man named Simon of Cyrene [2] is forced to pick up Jesus’ cross and carry it the rest of the way to Calvary. Simon was most likely a reluctant cross bearer. Most of us are reluctant cross bearers. We don’t choose the pain or suffering we’ve been dealt, and yet we carry the load. We don’t choose to carry another person’s cross when they are too weak to carry it themselves, but we are at times compelled by love to do so. This month marks the one year anniversary of the pandemic. It is a cross that we’ve all carried to one degree or another. For some it has been an inconvenience and for others a heavy burden of suffering and profound grief. Theologically there is no way to put a positive spin on the coronavirus or 2020. It has been a cross we didn’t choose. The strain of carrying this cross is evident in our country and congregations. We are all weary of it. On Palm/Passion Sunday and Good Friday we are drawn into the story of Jesus’ arrest, trial, and death. We walk alongside him in the crowd as he carries his cross, our cross, compelled by love. We walk with a suffering Jesus straining under the weight of this cross, stumbling, falling, getting back up and finally letting go, letting another carry it. Jesus knew pain in his human body, and so Jesus knows our every weakness. Jesus himself was beaten, knew suffering and was unable to carry the weight this cross. He falls to the ground under the weight of his love for us. As a church we invite others to walk in the way of Jesus knowing that they are carrying crosses they didn’t choose for themselves. We invite others to walk in the way of Jesus because as a community of faith we shoulder the burden and carry it all together. We help another carry their cross out of love. We are Simon of Cyrene. Maybe that is what this past year has taught us; that we need each other; we aren’t alone. We’ve been isolated, quarantined, but not alone. We can’t take our congregations for granted. We need our faith communities and the relationships with other believers because we can’t carry our own crosses. We follow the way of Jesus together bearing our neighbor’s crosses out of love. It is in the cross that Jesus carried and on which he was crucified that we can know the love of God and salvation. This is Luther’s Theology of the Cross. It is in the crosses that we as a community of faith carry together as we follow in the way of Jesus that we too see and know the love God. Dear friends of the Northwest Synod of Wisconsin, I am grateful for you, that during the pandemic, we were able to walk in the way of Jesus together. May you each know the joy of Easter! Christ is Risen. He is risen indeed.

Pastor’s Items:

Annual conference is May 4th. All are invited. Dinner plus business meeting and worship.

Assumption made that upset peoples will have already left church. Point of resolution is to encourage that 25% of churches would engage in reconciling church with issue and would openly engage in calling a LGBT person to ministry. Should Pastor share resolution forms with congregation? Discussion ensued. Ignoring issue is not a good choice. Council agreed. Discussion surrounding issue good idea. Suggestion to post information on website.

Vice President: Jeremie Rudek

Search for President: Imperative to have President. It should not be assumed that Jeremie will just fill this position in. Nominating committee should make more calls to members. Nominating Committee should pursue a President. Who are the members of the nominating committee? Where are annual meeting notes?

Responsibilities and duties of each committee: Each committee creates list of what exact job duties are. People need this information to be able to make informed decision. Discussion ensued about where exact job duties are listed. Are they in the Constitution or not? Necessary to have very specific job descriptions. The most updated Constitution is from 2017. Quick synopsis would be great tool to help members know exactly what is required of each role.

Communication and Tech Update: Website updated. Jeremie has not had a reply yet from host provider. Questions to be asked of provider. Web domain set to expire in October. Then there will be no website. Administrator privileges-someone must have access to. Only editorial access at this time. Equipment lists made. Internet speed found out. Northwest communications -need faster upload speed to livestream.. Does anyone have any more information about specifics regarding how many lines/DLS there actually

are? Where is this other line? Paul will send contact information to Jeremie. Jeremie in contact with Dave at Northwest communication.

Rachel will have children with Palms. Easter service will be held outdoors. Both services at 0900. Maundy Thursday and Good Friday 6:30 pm

Education Ministry: Ashley C.

Three kids for confirmation camp. First communion started.

Covid 19 Re-opening Committee: Ashley C:

Covid reopening- 25 people per group is now acceptable.

Welca: Question for Sharon Ammerman regarding thrift sale. Is WELCA hosting garage sale? Mission group should be responsible for this. Sharon Ammerman: Quilting started up this week. Money given to Grace Place to buy food. Meeting in two weeks at quilting time.

Final discussion was about possible Ruby’s Pantry event. Donnie to meet with planners to arrange dates

and involve other ministry teams.

Committees:

No additional reports from committees.

Zoom Call:

Opening prayer by Pastor Randy Olson. Introduction of Pastor Sandy Johnson. Multiple technical difficulties with zoom. Pastor looking forward to meeting us all. Pastor served in Synod since 2007, serving in Price county and River Falls. Served as Bridge Pastor at Mt. Zion in Hudson. Introductions made of Executive Council by Donnie K. Pastor familiar with Somerset. Raised her family in Osceola. Currently lives in River Falls.

How this process works- When congregations are seeking a Pastor it is important to ask questions. Council to decide if they want to move forward with interim pastor.

Ashley C: Are you comfortable with leading churches in the call process? Looking for leadership to help with call process?

Page 6: hrist Lutheran hurch

Church Council Minutes March 9, 2021

Page 6

Pastor Sandy muted- unable to answer question at this time. Waiting… Technical difficulty.

Pastor Randy answered following questions:

Q: What would timeline be for interim call?

A: Set up agreement for a year.

Q: Can church call a new Pastor if one is found during interim?

A: Yes. Contract would be set up like that. That is what a bridge interim Pastor is for.

Q: Is Pastor aware of church finances?

A: Yes, and she is aware it is part-time.

Q: Synod and church council have limitations in place regarding singing and chanting due to Covid -19. Is Pastor aware of these limitations?

A: Yes, Pastor should be aware of protocol and guidelines.

Pastor Sandy back on zoom at 6:42 pm.

Pastor Sandy: Process of calling Pastor takes time. Familiar with call process from previous church. Whole process would take many months to complete. Very fluid situation. Pastor Sandy noted that she has completed the covid vaccines and very happy about it!

Q: What are the Pastor’s capabilities regarding online and radio worship? Does Pastor understand technology behind this? Radio broadcasting requires MAC book. Managed by congregation.

Q: How hands on are you with Ministry teams? Do you meet with them and access strengths and weaknesses?

A: God has put in you in these places because of the gifts you all bring. She does not intend to step into a community of faith to change, although she may try to help guide things that are not working so well. Micromanaging- not helpful or healthy. Her role as an interim Pastor is to be supportive of ministry.

CLC has experienced some changes recently- new faces on executive committee and new faces in stewardship. They need guidance going forward in new roles. How does Pastor feel about stepping into this role?

Ellen S.: Please come to worship team meeting and work as team. Pastor affirms this is important. Important piece of faith community is planning. Brief discussion about worship committee.

Wednesday night youth ministry- discussion about bringing back in fall. Pastor involvement needed.

Q: Have you had training as an interim Pastor?

A: No. Most comfortable in role as Bridge Pastor.

Transition team trying to define what kind of call church is looking for. Pandemic has made this difficult. Declining congregation. Covid has been really hard on youth programs especially. Problems with capturing attention of younger families. Older generations not so affected.

Sharon A: Fellowship times- greatly attended. What special strength would you be bringing to CLC?

A: Building relationships, getting to know people, and encouraging them with their gifts. We have to change with times and be creative and think outside of box. Gift of listening and being attentive. Pastor Sandy will accompany and walk with you. I worked with the River Falls congregation helping to purchase property and gradually build church. It was an exciting time with many interesting challenges.

Donnie: What kind of schedule are you envisioning?

Pastor Sandy: Similar schedule to current schedule of Pastor Doug. Would be agreeable to her.

Page 7: hrist Lutheran hurch

Q: Question was asked about home bound visits. Pastor Sandy replied that time permitting she enjoys these activities.

Pastor Olson asks Paul Nasvik what expectations are regarding “Holy Conversations”, currently 4 Zoom, 3 with congregation and 1 youth. Attempt to involve many people. What kind of mission will CLC be involved in?

Cross generational small group talks – good way to open lines of communication. Times have changed and we need to change with them. What does CLC do well. What can we improve on? What can church say goodbye too? Time of opportunity for church.

Per Paul: Covid has given people opportunities to try other churches. Enrollment down. People are looking at other opportunities. Need Pastor input in how to approach this problem. Pastor questions what vaccination rate in Somerset is.

Zoom call ended with Pastor Sandy 7:22 pm.

Pastor Randy offered suggestions on how council should proceed.

Discussion ensued regarding Pastor. Pastor aware of financial straits of church.

Motion to concur to enter into agreement with Pastor Sandy. 7:29pm.

Discussion about difference between bridge/interim pastor. Titles confusing. Interim- walks congregation between in in between time of Pastors. Not necessarily trained in this type of ministry. Bridge Pastor is shorter term ministry/ bridging time between Pastor resignation and calling a new Pastor.

Pastor Sandy would be filling more of a bridge position.

Council needs to identify priority areas of church when putting together a contract. Transition team especially needs priority status.

Ashley C. made a motion to concur with Northwest Synod to enter into Bridge contract with Pastor Sandy Johnson. Ellen seconded the motion 7:34 pm.

Pastor Doug- Moment of Prayer for calling of Pastor.

Discussion point: Significant drop in attendance. Not best time to transition between pastors. Confirmation and upcoming wedding important to finish.

More realistic time frame is end of April for Pastor Sandy to start.

Pastor Randy Olson answers a few more questions:

Q: Synod suggests that a part-time contract means that only part of Sundays are covered?

A: Yes, that is correct. Multiple ways to set up contract.

With a part-time contract it is especially important to have clear expectations, so job does not drift into fulltime.

Motion made by Jeremie to vote in favor of pursuing contract with Pastor Sandy. All are in favor. Motion approved 7:40 pm.

Motion to adjourn 7:42. Second by Ashley C. 7:42 pm.

Closing Prayer: Pastor Doug led the council in the Lord’s Prayer.

Next Executive meeting date: April 6th @ 5:30 pm. Next Finance meeting date: April 13th @ 5:00 pm. Next Council meeting date: April 13th @ 5:30 pm. Respectfully submitted,

Liana Kulibert
