    Family day care awards

    Congratulations are due to the staff at Hobsons Bay Family Day Care (pictured above) for being nominated for an Excellence in Family Day Care award. The awards give families and educators the opportunity to put forward those staff and services they believe have done great work in their field. It is the only national award for family day care in Australia and provides an opportunity for staff to be recognised, stories to be shared, and achievements to be highlighted. The regional winners will be announced on 18 August, the state winners on 22 September, and the national winners on 25 October.

    Altona Meadows occasional careDid you know there are vacancies available at the Occasional Care program for children under six years of age? Professional, qualified and caring educators offer a range of activities and experiences for children. Occasional care provides parents with time to take a break or attend appointments while children have an opportunity to socialise with other children. Vacancies are available on Thursday and Friday mornings between 8.45am and 12.45pm during school term only.For more information contact Elicia Napoli Coordinator on 9932 2120.

    Street tree pruningYou may notice a few ladders around town supporting workers as they carefully trim the branches off local trees. Auditing of the street trees occurs every two years in Hobsons Bay. Tree pruning has commenced in Altona Meadows and we apologise for any inconvenience during this time. The pruning works are required to comply with power line clearance regulations and road traffic legislation, as well as to ensure trees are safe and healthy.

    While some trees are getting a trim, others are being planted. Our 2014 street tree planting program has begun and 1,400 street trees will be planted over the next few months in addition to 400 park trees. You are welcome to join us on 27 July to plant over 3500 tubestock at the Altona Coastal Park in recognition of National Tree Day. For more information, please give us a call on 9932 1000.

    Unsung heroes at Louis JoelYou may have read a few weeks ago about the Unsung heroes exhibition celebrating the generous spirit of volunteering in Hobsons Bay. For those who didnt get a chance to see the exhibition, your luck is now in. The Louis Joel Arts and Community Centre (housed in the old Altona district hospital at 5 Sargood Street) will be hosting it until Friday (10am to 4pm on all days except Friday when it closes at 3pm). The exhibition, curated by Heather van Heerwaarden, collects the stories and photographs of 23 remarkable local volunteers.

    Altonas Caleb Walmsley is among a group of 60 students from Williamstown High School who will travel to Africa in November to undertake charity work in remote villages.

    The year 11 student, who received $200 of Hobsons Bay council funding, must raise $7500 for the enterprise which is run by school expedition company World Challenge.

    Im going to Zambia and Botswana, he said. Im going to a small community and help out there for a week, restoring and building new dwellings and other things for them.

    I hope to ensure that we can improve their buildings and their daily lives. I dont like seeing someone struggling and its good to help people.

    Im worried that Im going to be really upset about it, about how privileged we are compared to their society.

    Other than that, Im really looking to put myself up for the challenge.

    World Challenges head of school support, Samantha Aparo, said project details for three Williamstown teams were still being finalised.

    As we work with developing countries and many communities are in need of help, we assess which of our projects will best benefit from our teams visiting them closer to their departure, she said.

    In the past, teams have built houses for school teachers, repaired classrooms, painted murals, built playgrounds, planted vegetable gardens and been involved with conservation efforts in the surrounding areas. Projects across Zambia and Botswana are largely focused on renovation or maintenance work in a local community.

    Police are appealing for witnesses after armed bandits dressed in Halloween- style masks held up staff at a West Footscray supermarket on June 29.

    Altona North detectives said two men entered the liquor section of the supermarket on Barkly Street just after 8.30pm.

    The men, wearing a pink mask and a green skeleton mask, approached the service counter and threatened staff with a firearm and crowbar before demanding cash.

    One of the bandits stole more cash from a storage room and told a staff member to lie on the ground before both men fled.

    An image has been released of the incident which shows one of the men wearing a black puffy jacket with diamond stitching.

    Nose broken in road attackPolice are on the hunt for a man who broke a Williams Landing mans nose during a road rage incident last Thursday. Werribees Sergeant Shannon Thompson said police were investigating the attack that took place near the Westside Hotel in Laverton at 5.45am. Police believe a man of Pacific Islander appearance swerved his concreting truck, swiping the driver-side mirror of the other mans car. The aggressor drove alongside the car and, driving on the wrong side of the road, attempted to run it off the road. An altercation then took place in which the alleged offender broke the Williams Landing mans nose. The 31-year-old victim, who was on his way home from work, drove himself to Werribee Mercy Hospital, where he received three stitches. The man police want to talk to is believed to be aged between 35 and 45.

    Market assaultPolice are appealing for information after a woman was indecently assaulted at a Footscray market on May 10. They said a woman was selecting vegetables at the market on Barkly Street about 2.45pm when a man approached from behind and attacked her. He then walked away and was seen heading towards Footscray train station. Hes described as having dark skin, a thin build, short curly black or brown hair, and clean shaven.     It was the wedding anniversary present that changed her life forever.

    On June 25, 1964, Margaret Lee and her husband were celebrating their special day with a plate of lamingtons.

    Later that day, Mrs Lee visited her doctor for a routine blood test.

    He told me I had high blood sugar and immediately I thought, its probably just the lamingtons. But he referred me to a specialist and I was diagnosed with diabetes what an anniversary present, she said.

    We had two young children and had just moved into a new house. My weight dropped as low as 43 kilograms and the specialist said it was a sign my body was not producing enough insulin.

    The Essendon West resident has type 1 diabetes, which affects about 10 to 15 per cent of people with the condition who require up to four injections of life-saving insulin a day.

    Today, people diagnosed with diabetes can access a wealth of advice and support. But it was a different story in the 1960s.

    I was shown how to inject myself by a doctor and I had these horrible glass syringes, which had to be kept in methylated spirits and boiled once a week to be sterilised, Mrs Lee recalls.

    Diabetes educators didnt exist and there wasnt a lot of information around. I still dont know how I managed to get through, especially in those early days.

    Mrs Lee was recently presented with the Kellion Victory Medal by Diabetes Australia.

    The award recognises people who have lived with type 1 or type 2 diabetes for 50 years or more. Mrs Lee, who regularly attends the Western Suburbs Diabetes Support Group

    based in Footscray, rarely experiences what is commonly known as a hypo, which occurs when a diabetics blood glucose level has dropped too low. In serious cases, it can lead to a loss of consciousness.

    Through simple changes to her diet and lifestyle, Mrs Lee has learnt to keep her condition under control, but she admits it hasnt always been easy.

    About nine years ago, I was also diagnosed with coeliac disease so Ive now had to adopt a gluten-free diet as well, she says.

    My late husband used to be able to pick when I was about to have a hypo because my

    lip would start to twitch and I would stumble over my words.

    Its simple things like doing the gardening or walking a few kilometres along the Maribyrnong River, which a few members of the group do every Tuesday, which help keep my blood-sugar levels down.

    National Diabetes Week (July 13-19) raises awareness of the condition and encourages people to check their risk.

    The Western Suburbs Diabetes Support Group meets on the third Thursday of every month at Maidstone Junior Sports Club. For more details, phone 9337 5417.
