A Letter from the Church WardensA Letter from the Church WardensWelcome to Holy Trinity Cambridge, or as we affectionately call ourselves, HT. We are a family community with vibrant worship, biblical teaching, a desire to be led by the Holy Spirit and a focus on helping people ‘Come to Christ, Learn to Love and Love to Learn in Cambridge and Beyond’.

17 years ago Rupert Charkham came to lead HT. We are so grateful for his ministry, and following his call to a new

ministry we are looking for a full-time stipendiary vicar to lead us into

a new phase of growth and change. This already looks

different now because of COVID-19 than it

did at the start of compiling this

document.

Over the past two decades we have seen exciting change. In 2003, 30 students worshipped at HT, the youth group had 2 members and Sunday attendance was around 130. Today around 140 students call HT their spiritual home, over 30 young people attend the youth group regularly and Sunday attendance averages around 500 within term time. These numbers only hint at God’s work in transforming individual lives through encounters with Jesus Christ.

We believe that it is the nature of God’s kingdom to grow, so we have been

We are aware of the impact the pandemic could have on potential applicants’ ability and appetite to relocate parish and church community, yet we remain committed to our mission and are hopeful and expectant the Lord is preparing the right candidate to lead us. investing in facilitating that growth. In 2017 we added to our physical bricks and mortar, completing a major refurbishment and building project called The Transform Project.

HT has a wonderful history, from the ministry of Charles Simeon to a hand in the lives of William Wilberforce, Henry Martyn, the “Cambridge Seven”, and many current influential church leaders in the UK. We firmly believe that in His kindness God still has many good and fruitful things for us to do! We are eager to step into the next season God has for us and to play the role He ordains for us in building His Kingdom in our city and our world.

We believe that the We believe that the description of the early church description of the early church in Acts 2:42-47 is God’s heart in Acts 2:42-47 is God’s heart for His church today, so we for His church today, so we embrace it as a blueprint for embrace it as a blueprint for our life together and take our our life together and take our core values from it. core values from it.

We want to be a community where:

The Word Grows:The Word Grows: We aim to be a church that lets the word of God grow through faithful study and ultimately, taking it to heart and obeying it.

The Worship Flows:The Worship Flows: We prioritise worship, with a deep desire to please God as his church family and to lift up the Lord Jesus Christ to His rightful place on heaven’s throne.

The Love Shows:The Love Shows: We aim to devote ourselves to fellowship and let our love for one another, through Jesus Christ, show in all that we do.

The Spirit Glows:The Spirit Glows: We long to see the Spirit at work amongst us and so we pray from our hearts, ‘come Holy Spirit’. We want to fan into flame this invaluable gift and aim to be a Spirit-led people.

The World Knows: The World Knows: We want to let the world know the good news of Jesus Christ and share the reason for the hope we have. We expect to see lives changed as people come to know Christ as Saviour and enter into a personal relationship with God, and we believe that in turn this has the power to change the world.

HT naturally sits within the charismatic evangelical tradition of the Anglican Church and we subscribe to the Church of England Evangelical Council’s basis of faith.

Living out these values in the heart of Cambridge – a cosmopolitan, university city in constant flux - makes for a lively, exciting community with plenty going on every day of the week.

We believe that Jesus Christ changes lives today, and Sunday services are the main expression of our worship, declaration and pursuit of Him as a church family. In our services we prioritise worship - we have contemporary worship at each service - and we highly value excellent and relevant preaching.

We also aim to present Jesus to a world that is spiritually hungry but also spiritually ignorant, at least when it comes to the gospel, so our services are designed to be accessible for visitors who are not familiar with church or its lingo.

All our services are similar in format and feel, with a warm, informal and lively atmosphere. Communion is celebrated at one of the services each Sunday, and once a term we have extended worship after the 5:30pm service.

Our SundaysOur SundaysW H O W E A R EW H O W E A R E

After every service there is coffee served and a prayer ministry team on hand to pray for anyone who would like it.

Behind the scenes Sundays are awash with fantastic volunteers! When we are in full swing with three services on a Sunday, it takes 25 volunteers a week to make our services the warm and worshipful place we love (that is not including staff, ordinands, the worship team or HT Kids and Youth teams!).

HT Kids has doubled in size in the last three years, with now over 130 families counting HT as their spiritual home. On an average Sunday, we have 80-90 under 12s participating across our groups. More children (including many new to church) visit our special events throughout the year like our Light Party, Nativity Play and socials.

The HT Kids ministry is served by over 40 fantastic volunteers from all across the church family, who make HT Kids so full of tremendous fun that children cannot wait to bring their friends to hear about Jesus!

HT KidsHT Kids

HT Youth (for ages 11-18) aims to be a place of faith, fun, family and fruit! HT Youth meets on a Sunday evening during the 5:30pm service.

There are currently around 60 young people ‘on the books’, of whom 30-40 turn up on an average Sunday evening, and about 25 could be considered a committed core.

HT YouthHT YouthAlongside Sundays, there are lots of other events: socials, a youth leadership course, uni-preparation sessions, and every year there is a Youth Weekend Away and a trip to a summer Christian festival.

HT Youth is served by a team of nine excellent volunteer youth leaders, who invest in our young people by mentoring, leading small groups and speaking at events.

Worship is at the very core of HT: it has long been our desire to be a fountain of praise at the heart of the city. The worship life of HT has

developed significantly over the last ten years - we now have a fantastic team, modern technology (much improved after the recent Transform project), and a

deep desire to seek and glorify God with our individual and corporate worship. We often talk about ‘welcoming people into the presence of God’ during our

times worshipping together.

As well as the Sunday services, the worship ministry is involved in all of HT’s central gatherings and many events for individual

ministries, and regularly hosts times dedicated to prayer and worship. The HT worship team currently has 45

wonderful volunteers; these talented musicians and technicians come from all across the HT family,

with a significant portion being students.

HT’s Home Groups are small groups of 10-16 people who meet in homes midweek to read the Bible, worship and pray together. These groups are the lifeblood of the church, where we practise together the joy and discipline of allowing God to lead us through Scripture and His Spirit. Since HT has grown so much in recent years, Home Groups are the primary place where people are known and therefore most pastoral support happens through them.

Home GroupsHome Groups

We have run the Alpha Course dozens of times over the last 10 years, in various formats and for a range of ages and stages. Members of the

HT family have run Alpha Courses in their workplaces, schools and colleges, and it has been wonderful to see God add to the church

through these courses.

Centrally, HT has run an Alpha Course from January – March each year. We have had a range of course

sizes, from 25 to around 60+ each week. Since the completion of our Transform project there

are many opportunities for creatively using the new building spaces for the

Alpha Course in the future.

Currently there are 25 groups meeting all over Cambridge and beyond, with a total of around 300 members. Most groups are a mix of ages and stages, with a small handful primarily 20s & 30s or seniors.

We have over 50 Home Group leaders: fantastic, spiritually mature men and women who pastor and facilitate these groups.

HT is blessed to have two universities (Cambridge and

ARU) directly on its doorstep, so ministry and mission to students

is a core piece of the HT landscape.

Around 140 undergraduates call HT their spiritual home while at university. The students bring incredible life and joy to the wider church, serving across the Kids, Youth and Worship ministries with their energy, talents and passion for God.

At the centre of HT Students is our Student Night every Tuesday: around 120 students are part of Risky Living, with attendance between 80-100 each week. Also central is Sunday Student Lunch, where we regularly welcome 70-80 students after the 11.30am service. There are also plenty of termly events, such as

HT Students HT Students

HT’s 20s & 30s ministry is a growing community within the wider adult congregation. We get new faces all the time! Of the adults who joined the church from August - December 2019, two-thirds were in this age bracket.

The group facilitates meaningful friendships and provides occasional spiritual support on issues particularly pressing at this stage of life. We have a social event and a spiritual event each term, all facilitated by a committee of six HT members under the leadership of the Adult Pastor.

20s & 30s 20s & 30s

prayer and worship evenings, teaching seminars, Bible studies, socials, one-to-one pastoral coffees, as well as annual houseparties.

As a result of this wonderfully fruitful ministry, around 5-10 students are baptised each year. The opportunity to disciple and raise up leaders is enormous. One of our greatest joys is receiving letters from church leaders across the country, year on year, saying how grateful they are to have received HT alumni who are such committed, equipped and servant-hearted followers of Jesus. We also currently have around 10 former students training for ordination in the Church of England.

New Creations is a mid-week group for mums, and exists to help mothers with little ones share the good news of Jesus with their friends. Every week we run activities for mums and have a “thought for the day” from the Bible. Mothers build friendships, find support and appreciate the optional crèche offered. Around 40 mums attend the group over a term (20-25 on average each week).

Over the last ten years over 500 mothers have attended the group, many of whom stay in touch with the HT family after they return to work. Many still come to HT Kids events and a few have come on Alpha Courses and started attending HT.

We take seriously God’s Great Commission to make disciples of all nations and to play our part in His world-wide church, so HT supports a large number of mission partners in the UK and overseas - you can read about them on our website.

Over recent years, we have annually sent a team of students to serve at the Jubilee Centre in Zambia, and several individuals from the church family

HT Mission PartnersHT Mission Partnershave followed God’s call on their lives to contribute to a variety of ministries in the UK and overseas.

Our Mission Support Committee encourages the HT family to take an active concern in the spread of the Gospel in the UK and overseas, as well as managing the mission fund through which we give 10% of our unrestricted voluntary income to the work of missionaries and mission agencies.

Connections is HT’s daytime women’s group. Meeting every Thursday morning during school term-time for coffee and community, there is time for worship, studying the Bible and praying together in small groups. A crèche is provided for preschool age children.

ConnectionsConnectionsAround 40 women are ‘on the books’, representing mums with young families, women working part-time or postgraduate students, and older women who prefer being part of a daytime fellowship rather than (or as well as) a Home Group.

Church of EnglandChurch of EnglandWhile HT has a strong and deepening relationship with our Diocese, we are yet to properly explore the possibilities for co-working and resourcing within the Diocese. As HT continues to expand and mature we see many opportunities to be a greater blessing to the local church. At the same time, a new vicar would need to be aware of the increasing challenge it is to uphold orthodox biblical standards on ethical issues such as same-sex relationships, and would need to be prepared to navigate these tricky waters with both conviction and generosity.

Cambridge Cambridge City & UniversityCity & UniversityWith the city and university on our doorstep, there are manifold opportunities for ministry and mission. While both the city and university are steadily secularising the door is not yet shut to churches. Mission is still very fruitful among students and we have found the local government open to input and partnership, which we could explore more in future.

Shifting gearsShifting gearsOver the last 15 years HT has had to change shape several times to accommodate continuing growth, and excitingly HT is at yet another threshold. A new vicar will need wisdom to continue to restructure the church and lead and reshape a relatively young staff team to take us to the next stage.

Broadening missionBroadening missionAs well as growing numerically, we continue to grow in maturity as a church community. Worship, discipleship and evangelism will always remain central to our agenda, but there is both opportunity and hunger to add new ministries and opportunities to serve, including areas like prayer and social action.

Looking InwardsLooking InwardsBoth spiritual wisdom and significant operational upskilling will be required to take the vast energy of the church and channel it in the right directions.

Utilising a new spaceUtilising a new spaceAlthough it is over two years now since our church building was radically updated and new offices added onsite, we are yet to fully capitalise on our buildings and space. At the same time we are already challenged by outgrowing our space! Vision and creativity will be needed to help us inhabit our wonderful new home to its full potential.

As a result, you’ll have experience casting, clearly communicating and implementing vision. When it comes to evangelism and discipleship, you’ll be thoroughly experienced in leading individuals to encounter Jesus and grow to greater faithfulness, fruitfulness and freedom in Him.

You’ll also have substantial preaching experience, both within and beyond your local context, with a notable gift for explaining and applying Scripture with joy and power.

You’ll have considerable experience identifying, training and releasing volunteers and leaders, as well as releasing new self-sustaining ministries. We’d also expect you to have plenty of experience recruiting excellent people and managing (directly and indirectly) a large staff team.

The CityThe CityCambridge is a beautiful historic city with a population of around 145,000 (including 24,500 students). As well as attracting considerable numbers of tourists, Cambridge University has shaped the city into a world-renowned centre of academic excellence: two universities, many excellent primary and secondary schools, and the best state

sixth form in the country. The city is one of the UK’s centres for science and technology, and one of the largest biomedical research clusters in the world.

Cambridge has an unusually transient population, with students, young professionals and families flooding in and out every year. This is

an enormous opportunity. There are always new faces, fresh opportunities to share the gospel, and a clear mission to equip

people to be sent and serve the wider church after their time in Cambridge - a mission Charles Simeon saw in

his day and one which remains in ours. Additionally there is an opportunity to be a family and a home

to those far from home, lonely, or isolated.

The ParishThe ParishHT’s parish is very small (0.1 square miles) and is situated in the heart of Cambridge city centre. The parish includes two colleges, two parks, a large handful of shops, pubs, and cafés, and 440 households. The parish’s population according to the 2011 census was 1,694 with a high number of students and, given the limited space, is unlikely to have grown noticeably since then. HT is in Cambridge South Deanery, Cambridge Archdeanary and Ely Diocese.

Being so centrally located, within walking distance of many colleges full of students, we have a natural mission to students, which the whole church fully embraces.

The CongregationThe CongregationThe adult church congregation (including students) is 650, drawn from a wide geographical area as is usual with city centre churches. The congregation has a strong core from a wide range of backgrounds who have been committed to the church for many years. Being in the

city that we are, the congregation is well educated. Over half of our congregation (60%) are under the age of 40. With large numbers of students and the wider transience of Cambridge’s population, HT benefits from the energy and buzz of new faces but also has the interesting challenge of a 20% turnover per annum.

The main source of weddings, funerals and baptisms for HT comes from within the congregation itself. These responsibilities are shared among the clergy and baptisms take place within our Sunday services. The number of funerals in a year is very low.

With a constant demand for baptisms we hold these every other month for newborns and three times a year for adults. With a thriving student and 20s & 30s ministry, there are a healthy number of weddings throughout the year with other staff in attendance acting as vergers.

Holy Trinity ChurchHoly Trinity ChurchThe church is a Grade II* listed building which can be dated back to 1189, but was restored and partially rebuilt in the 1880s.

In 2017 we completed a major refurbishment of the main church building. This enables us, among other things, to use the pew-less space and new kitchen to serve large events such as the Alpha Course. The latest Quinquennial report in 2019 concluded that the church is generally well maintained.

Charles Simeon CentreCharles Simeon Centre

A brand new four storey building adjoining the church was completed in 2017 as part of the Transform project. Throughout the week it is used as offices, space for various ministries as well as break out space for midweek gatherings. Come Sunday it is transformed into extra space for the burgeoning HT Kids work.

Henry Martyn Hall Henry Martyn Hall This is a Grade II listed Victorian hall with meeting rooms, adjoined to the church, and is a venue for many church activities, including HT Kids and HT Youth groups on a Sunday. The Hall is leased on a long-term basis (125 years) by HT from the Henry Martyn Trust.

In 2018 we carried out a simple refurbishment to upgrade the flooring, kitchen, décor, electrics and heating.

The Vicar of HT is an “ex-officio” Trustee of the Henry Martyn Trust. Taking up this Trusteeship is at the Vicar’s discretion (more details of the organisation can be found online here).

The Vicarage The Vicarage The current vicarage is to be sold and the diocese, in consultation with us, is in the process of finding a suitable alternative. We hope the uncertainty around a defined residence won’t deter anyone from applying. We would be happy to receive any enquiries about this from interested candidates, and would welcome any questions relating to this at the interview stage (if the new acquisition isn’t complete by then).

HT’s finances are in a comfortable position.

We have a balanced budget and over the years we have successfully grown our income in line with the increasing congregation. This has enabled us to ensure that all the growing ministries and activities of the Church are well funded.

The majority of our income is from regular standing orders which have not currently been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic. We have good financial reserves on our balance sheet which we can draw from if necessary.

There is no debt and a Diocesan loan to help with funding the Transform project was paid off on schedule in 2018.

Income in 2020 is expected to be about £850k which will broadly be spent as illustrated:
