Part II
Managing and Parenting
Teens
What is our goal for our teens?
We are raising independent Adults
who will take care of theirown business.
In just four short years…
Your ninth grader will be graduating and heading out to live on his or her own. What independent living skills will each student need to be independent. Fill out the following chart with activities that you provide, things that your child is working to accomplish and then those things that your child can handle on his or her own. Your goal is to move all activities to the child’s column. How are you doing?

Ponder…
You will spend three times as much time with your children
as Adults as with your children as Children.
Reminder…
We are raising independent Adults
who will take care of theirown business.
One of the first activities
That kids should manage effectively is their school work. So let’s look at what is involved and determine who is responsible for which part.
Managing HomeworkThe Child The Parent The Teacher
*Know and understand homework policies.
*Bring assignments and materials home.
*Identify assignments to be completed.
*Organize time and materials.
*Independent completion of assignments.
*Return homework to the Classroom.
*Arrange for tutorials.
*Meet with teacher for questions.
*Create an environment conducive to study.
*Role model appropriate study habits.
*Know and understand school homework policies.
*Provide encouragement.
*Set limits and consequences for homework.
*Set grade expectations.
*Modify study time as necessary to support grade expectations.
*Establish homework policy.
*Provide meaningful homework.
*Evaluate student learning.
*Provide appropriate feedback.
*Set tutorial time and be available for reteach.
And furthermore…
Manage your teen’s study time as you would an employee. Limited emotion.
Don’t punish for failing grades. Supervise more time working on the work.
Don’t talk about it too much or get angry because then it becomes your fault.
Sometimes bright children have never really learned how to do homework prior to
high school. Like riding a bike they must figure out the balance.
There is a correlation between students who make A’s and
students who keep a set homework time.
Where to Study
The Brain needs to recognize the study habit. Not in the Kitchen – that is for eating. Not in the Bed – that is for sleeping. Not on the couch in front of the TV.
Establish the homework habit by completing homework in the same spot at the same time each day.
A Day/B Day
Complete A Day homework on A Dayand
B Day homework on B Days.
Otherwise a student is waiting more than 24 hours and listening to 4 more classes of
instruction before they begin the assignment from the previous day.
Plus there is time to request a tutorial before the next class.
How to Request a Tutorial
The students should email to the teacher to ask if he or she can attend a morning
tutorial. Copy mom and dad on the request. Make the request at least 24 hours in
advance. If a student needs to hear the material in a different way or the teacher is not available
when the student is available, then go to another teacher who teaches the same
subject.
Parents, you may need to confirm attendance.
Do Not Do Your Kid’s Homework
If the grade standard you have set (be realistic!!) is being met then stay out of Homework Time unless you are asked.
Remember, you are raising an independent adult who will take care of his or her own
business.
Control your anxiety and perfectionism.
Is your child rested?
SLEEP!DepressionIrritability
ADDLimit blue screen time if sleeping is an
issue. Ninth graders should be in bed by 10:30 each night. Stop the homework by
then.
Structure for Teens
“Those things that hurt, instruct.”
Ben Franklin
2, 4, 13, 15Set boundaries!
“By age fifteen most teens and parents deserve each other.”
Foster KlineParenting Teens with Love and Logic
Split Personality Parenting
Setting homework guidelines and standards requires a Business Tone of Voice.
Limit the number of words you use. “You are going to be fine; ask if your have
questions. Good Luck!”
But Teenage Discipline requires that they fear you because you love them so much you will do crazy, crazy things. Like cancel their cell
phone and show up at school. Be in charge to keep them safe.
Drugs, Alcohol, and other Bad Behavior
Ask questions. Call the other parent. Ask specifically if
they will be home. No two 9th graders should be unsupervised.
If you must give an immediate answer then, ‘NO’. If you can have time to get more info then the answer may be yes.
Check their electronic devices. You are paying.
Tell them you are crazy and you will drug test them. Then do it. Be preemptive.
Other good (and positive) ideas…
Visit colleges now. Give them a view of where they are going.
Encourage working. Students who work part time make better grades.
Encourage and provide opportunities for service to others. Too much self
contemplation can lead to depression. Set a budget and don’t give them too much
stuff.
