Computerised Nurse Call System

GeneralAckermann’s computerised Nurse Call Systems have been manufactured to fulfil thepresent valid standards and regulations for light signalling technology (ALT) (DIN VDE0834 part 1 and 2).

System overviewComputerised Nurse Call Systems are microprocessor-controlled systems which utiliseaddress-coded transmission in time division multiplexing mode. Up to 64 physicalzones can be installed with these systems. Each physical zone can be devided up into6 logical sub-zones, this division being realised exclusively by software. For the user, alogical zone represents an independently functioning group. The maximum number ofall logical zones is limited to 240. If more than 128 logical zones are used, the NurseCall Control Unit must be specifically expanded for this purpose. A maximum of 50 users is permitted in a physical zone (exception: only 25 ZE4/8).However, it must be ensured in this case that all devices (e.g. interface units or masterstations) are treated like rooms. The definition of the user address is variable and canbe changed at any time. An WL operating computer or a nurse call server - the mini-mum configuration for a WIN-System - is used to operate the Nurse Call System.

System characteristicsThe Nurse Call Systems is designed for quick and easy installation. The software allowsindividual flexibility, adapting to any changes in the application. For example patient roomnumbers can be quickly changed and allocated during or after installation.

Calls and presences can be displayed at the operating station, in corridors, in dutyrooms and patient rooms. With the speech option the call can be answered from anyone of this points.

Operating the presence push button results in: cancellation of the call within the room, activation of the call transfer and preparation of an emergency call. Existing calls fromother rooms will be transferred to this room.

Systems with a speech facility allow communication from room to room or betweenduty room and the patient. The computerised Nurse Call System can be operated in acentralised, decentralised or combined mode, according to requirements.

The system uses a single six core cable for power supply, speech and data lines.

System description clino opt and clino phon

System structureThe computerised Nurse Call System consists of 3 components: the Nurse Call Server (PC),the Nurse Call Control Unit (PRZ),the room equipment.

The Nurse Call Server and the Nurse Call Control Units are independently functional.

Nurse Call ServerThe Nurse Call Server provides the interface between the Nurse Call Control Unit (PRZ)and the operating processors. It manages the existing calls in the system and transfersthem to the processors. An auxiliary database enables the management of configura-tion data such as room numbers and patient specific information.

Operating computerThe operating computer is used as a display unit for the information of the Nurse CallControl Unit (PRZ).

When used with a communication unit and in connection with a speech facility, the ope-rating computer enables general address calls and direct calls to rooms and beds totake place. Calls on the system and staff presences are displayed in graphic or in tabu-lar form.

The operating computer is connected to the Nurse Call Server with a networkedarrangement and therefore has access to the installed database. This information canbe retrieved and processed for administrative purpose.

Nurse Call Control Unit (PRZ)The Nurse Call Control Unit (PRZ) is the main control unit. It is built as a multi-processor unit and comprises of a micro-processor, and audio adapter card (AAK) anda communication processor unit (KPE). Additional control cards can be added accor-ding to requirements.

The control programs and configuration data of the Nurse Call System are loaded bythe WL operating computer or nurse call server (WIN) into the control computer andtransmitted to the communication processor units (KPE) and the audio adapter card(AAK). The communication processor units (KPE) can be exchanged during operation, the required program is being called up automatically by the control computer. If the programs need to be modified or updated, they can be loaded on the Nurse CallControl Unit at any time.

System description clino opt and clino phon

Room equipmentThe information in the Nurse Call Systems, e.g. patient calls, can be answered in therooms with the help of various system units. For example, room terminals with a display show pending calls in the order of their priority. If there are no normal, emer-gency or enhanced calls waiting, the remind calls and presences are displayed. Severalcalls with the same priority are scrolled on the display at intervals of about 2 to 3 seconds. The ZT 95 and ZT 95I room terminals also serve as additional callanswering units.

The connection board for the room terminals, electronic elements and the electronicmodule serves as a room distribution board and enables simple wiring of the beds andother fittings in the rooms.

Operating units without speech facility can be installed on the patient beds. Theseinclude, for example, call push buttons (also for pneumatic activation), pull cords, can-cel buttons and call/cancel buttons, pear push- and multiple push buttons, as well aspatient handsets with electro-acoustic transmission.

Nurse Call Systems with intercommunication capability offer the additional option ofinstalling operating units with speech facility. These include, for example, the patienthandset with autorelease plug system for private two-way communication, or the patientterminal with autorelease plug system. In addition to the call function, these operatingunits enable radio/TV and lighting control, as well as private two-way communication.Patient terminals with integrated telephone function and billing system can also beused.

The nurses stations and duty rooms can be equipped with a master station. In addition todisplaying calls and presences, it also permits zone linking. When coupled with thespeech facility, the master station can be used to make general address calls and direc-tly contact rooms or beds.

Following types of calls are indicated:

Call type According to Optical signalsDIN 41050, Part 1

– Patient calls:normal call nurse call (short: call) permanent light – red – bathroom/WC call bathroom or WC call permanent light – white –priority call enhanced call flashing light – red –enhanced enhanced call flashing light – white –bathroom/WC call

– Staff calls:emergency call nurse call with flashing light – red –

or/and – yellow –

– Further calls:diagnostic call diagnostic call flashing light – red –remind call enhanced call flashing light– red –

in memory switching (slow blinking rhythme)telephone call telephone call permanent light telephone

lamp –white–

Only a six-core system cable is required for power supply, speech and data lines. An emergency call is indicated in all zones by the group signal lamps, or on the infor-mation display (with zone linking).

In addition to the visual signal, audible signals are also relayed to all rooms in whichpresences are set. In this context, the Nurse Call Systems distinguish between two callcategories. Category 1 includes normal and bathroom/WC calls. Category 2 includesdoctor, emergency, diagnostic and priority calls, as well as the enhanced bathroom/WCcalls and the bathroom/WC emergency call. When calls are transferred, the Category 1and 2 calls, and the doctor and telephone calls are identified by different signal intervals.

Page 9: Document

System description clino opt and clino phon

External equipment interfacingThe call system can be extended by adding equipment via the interface. For example,it is possible to connect the paging system such as „clino call“ to the Nurse CallSystem.

Furthermore it is possible to connect internal messages, such as fire alarms or techni-cal alarms via interface units. In WIN-Systems, external information systems can belinked to the Nurse Call System via the local network and correspondingly adaptedprotocols.

SafetyThe Nurse Call System is self monitoring. Any malfunctions are selectively shown oneach display terminal. In the case of a total failure of the Nurse Call Control Unit thesystem operates in an emergency mode and provides call functions, call cancel, pre-sence indication and call transfer to rooms where presence has been set, in addition to thevisual indication of the corridor and zone lamps. In case of power failure, calls remainstored until the power supply is connected again.

An auto-release plug mounted onto a pear or multiple push button as well as on thepatient terminal or patient handset allows a safe disconnection and thus avoids damageto the plug and socket units found in conventional arrangements. When a plug is inad-vertently removed a „plug out“ message is shown on the display units. Lamp outputsare also short-circuit protected. The IP classes indicated in the catalogue refer to thecompletely assembled unit, including cover plates and mounting frames.

Electrical safety and EMC requirements conform to appropiate EC directives.

Maintenance and serviceThe equipment is durable. However it is recommended that the performance of theequipement is verified periodically. Room equipment such as the room terminal and theelectronic modules can be replaced at any time, simply by plugging and unplugging, without interrupting the operation of the system. The servicing of the componentsshould be carried out by a specialist.

A diagnostic function allows the display of information regarding the actual operationalcondition of the system on screen of the operating computer.

A modem can be connected to the operating computer enabling remote diagnosticsand the update of new systems software. This allows capability to diagnose problemsand enables software improvements.
