Havasupai Indian Reservation in Arizona.

Jake Rajs’ recently published book, Carved by Time, captures the

magnificence of the the southwestern landscape. ” There’s no place like

the Desert Southwest. It’s a land of parched canyons, bleached solitudes,

and bulwarks of intoxicating rock,” Hampton Sides writes in the book’s

introduction. “It’s the country made famous by Edward Abbey, Wallace

Stegner, and Georgia O’Keeffe, a queer world of upheaval and stark

finality cooked in an unforgiving forge. The scale of its dwarfs human

beings, not only spatially but also chronologically, suggesting chasms of

time that mock our relevance in the story of creation.”

Fantasy Urban Makeover, withPhotoshopMAY 27, 2010 10:00P.M.

Fresh from Japan!

The new, improved, and oh-so-sleek Fuji

Instax Mini 25

Who hasn’t been stuck on a four-lane interstate from hell and bemoaned

the death of the corner store, the small town, the narrow country road?

David Yoon didn’t moan, he did something about it.

Sort of.

Taking photos of multi-lane monstrosities all around Los Angeles, he

wielded the power of Photoshop, and he narrowed LA.

With a stroke of a brush, gaping boulevards took on an agreeable charm.

Chasm-like intersections, humbled by the mighty masking tool. You’ll be

stunned what a change the width of a street can make to the character of

a town.

Best, he made a video showing how he did it. Time to take your home

city down a notch.

How David Yoon Makes the World Smaller

p.s. We got our instant film-loving hands on the (just released!) Fuji

Instax Mini 25. It’s slimmer, sleeker, and packed with fancy new

features you’ll love! Learn more…

All photos © Susanna Pozzoli. On the Block #59, 2008, courtesy Harlem

Italian photographer Susanna Pozzoli was invited by the Harlem Studio

Fellowship by Montrasio Arte, a privately funded non-profit residency

program for international artists, to work on a photographic project in

2007. The result was a three years long fascinating portrait of all the

buildings’ interiors (private houses, school, church, bar, doctor’s office)

present in one single city block, the one where Harlem Studio Fellowship

is located. The project is currently on view at the UCR California

Museum of Photography in Los Angeles.
