The 2012 scal year is coming to an
end. As the Rotating and Acting
CEO, I am gratied to share this
great news with you: Huawei's
sales revenue for 2012 is expected
to exceed US$35 billion, with a net prot of about
US$2.4 billion, a more than 10% increase year on
year for both. The Carrier Network BG has further
consolidated its position in the industry. We havedeployed over 130 LTE and over 70 EPC commercial
networks worldwide, ranking number one globally
in these two elds. The Enterprise BG has launched
a series of competitive products such as data center switches, storage products, and full-view telepresence
systems. Huawei Device has established solid foundations in product design, quality, and costs. In addition,
the smartphone business has made breakthroughs in scale in high-end markets such as Japan, the US, and
Europe.
We have weathered another turbulent year: the downward spiral in the global economy, an
investigation into cyber security allegations by a particular committee of the US Congress, political
upheavals in the Middle East and Northern Africa, as well as natural disasters including oods and
earthquakes. I would like to express my most sincere gratitude to our customers, suppliers, and partnersacross the world. My thanks also go out to our staff members for your dedicated work and to your loved
ones for their support. Without your support, Huawei wouldn't have outperformed the market in 2012.
The Mayan doomsday prediction was false, but we see unprecedented information oods on the
horizon. Statistics show that the data created in 2012 alone is equal to all the data created in human history
before 2012 and this trend will continue. Rapid transmission of data to every corner of the world is an
inevitability, which will create incredible demands.
In the era of information oods, Huawei denitely cannot be Lord Ye who claimed to love dragons1.

Seizing opportunities, focusing on strategy, and simplifying management are the core measures that we
will take to achieve effective growth in the next ve years.
As a professional ICT solutions provider, we are committed to achieving "high bandwidth,
multiple services, and zero wait time". After two decades of development, we are now able to gather
all the required human resources and materials to strengthen our investment in the major pipes,
including information access, convergence, transmission, switching, and storage. Our historical mission
and strategic opportunity is to achieve breakthroughs in key technologies and align our offerings
with market demands. Our strategic objective in 2013 is to establish our leading positions in Mobile
Broadband (MBB), Fixed Broadband (FBB), and backbone network solutions. Our value does not
simply lie in our capability to help customers lower their procurement costs. More importantly, it lies in
our capability to increase their competitiveness and protability. Our goal is to become our customers'
trusted partner.
We should devote our limited energy to specic business objectives, and avoid the impulse to
expand business blindly. Managers who expand business blindly must be held accountable.
There was a time when rapid growth was Huawei's priority and strong execution was Huawei's
distinctive feature. These characteristics have contributed to our fast development, and at the same time
created the lingering issue of extensive management at Huawei. As business growth becomes steady and
moderate, we have to ensure reasonable prots to support our continuous strategic investment. Looking
ahead to 2013, we should enhance customer/supplier facing roles, consolidate customer/project-based
budgeting and accounting, and reasonably control costs; we should ensure timely and accurate delivery
while improving operating quality. In addition, we need to mitigate the following major risks: risks
caused by historical issues which emerge because of slower business growth, operational risks arising
from the deteriorating business environment, as well as business risks associated with uncertainties
introduced by the pace of business investment and new business development. To survive and develop
sustainably, we must prioritize efciency.
Responsibility and performance are the most important basis for selecting and assessing
managers at Huawei. In 2013, we must continue to simplify our internal management: We must
delegate more authority to eld ofces, shift the focus of our HQ organizations to service, support, and
supervision, streamline HQ organizations, and simplify processes. Moreover, we must focus less on
expense settlement intended for performance appraisals, optimize value assessment and distribution
mechanisms, and motivate our staff members to apply full effort to create value.
"Where does happiness come from? It comes only from diligent work." In 2013, we will further
our efforts in legal and regulatory compliance across the world, become more open and transparent,
and proactively contribute to the betterment of the global business environment. Huawei has business
presence in 150 countries and regions worldwide. Apart from providing products and services, we
are committed to integrating with local society. We will expand business operations, create jobs, and
contribute to tax revenue. We will attract more talent from all over the world to create a better
future for the company."Do not regret that spring is departing, as it will be twice as enchanting next year."
With the concerted efforts of all our staff members, I believe we can achieve our goal of
"focusing on strategy, simplifying management, and increasing efciency". In 2013, we
will maintain vitality and effective growth.
Wish you a Happy New Year! May health and happiness be with you always!

T
he New Year Message, "Focus on Strategy, Simplify Management, Increase
Efciency", from our Rotating and Acting CEO, clearly presents our objectives
for the new year. We must focus on our strengths, fully leverage the capabilities
of our organization, tap into the self-motivation and creativity of our staff
members along the fairway, and produce greater results.
As we know, water and air are among the gentlest stuff in the world. That's why water andbreeze often carry praise. We also know that this same gentle air can send rockets into space. The
high-speed exhaust that results from the burning of rocket fuel can generate tremendous thrust
through a small hole in a device called a de Laval nozzle; the air expanding out of the nozzle can
propel mankind into space. Water is as soft as a beauty, yet it can cut through steel plates once
highly pressurized and forced through a small hole. This is "might from a small hole". Huawei
is an ordinary company and our employees are ordinary people. In the past, our appraisal system
focused on commonalities rather than individualities, and therefore failed to appropriately widen the
gap between employees with respect to compensation and benets. This practice frustrated some
employees who had striven to create value. As a result, many excellent employees left Huawei.
We ordinary ones stayed behind. Over 25 years, we have focused only on one goal and remained
dedicated. We have never wavered. Now we have 150,000 employees. Just as water jetting from onehole, our efforts have achieved something amazing. This is "might from a small hole". We focus on
our strategy to sharpen our global edge in a particular eld. A sharp competitive edge proves that we
do not need to have background to establish ourselves among the global leaders.
In addition, we adhere to the principle of "obtaining benets from one source". Our EMT
declaration has made it clear that all income of our most senior executives and key employees is
conned to such items as salaries, incentives, and bonuses offered by Huawei. No income from
outside Huawei is allowed. We have established organizations and systems which prevent anyone
at Huawei, from the most senior ofcers down to the execution level, from gaining benets by
devouring collective interests through afliate transactions. Over the past 20 years, our benets
have basically been derived from one source, thus creating a climate of united dedication among
our 150,000 employees. We are aware that there are still many areas for improvement in our
management; we are endeavoring to improve them. I believe our human resource policies will
become more and more scientic if we adhere to the principle of "obtaining benets from one
source". Consequently, our employees will be more and more passionate about their work. Then
there will be nothing we cannot conquer.
If we can adhere to the principles of "gaining might from a small hole and obtaining benets
from one source", Huawei will not be the next to fall. However, if we diverge from these principles,
Huawei will probably be the next to fall. History tells us that if large companies miss a turning point
and start to decline, few of them can reverse the situation by restructuring themselves. Naturally, we
would hate to fall; so we must restrain ourselves, observe rules, and stay united and dedicated.
With lofty aspirations and esprit de corps, we are striding across the Pacic Ocean.

It is indeed a totally different
atmosphere to the person who has
come from the work environment of
Telecom Operators in India and the
Vendors of European Nations etc.
When I decided to Join Huawei
communication I was not sure what
type of culture is followed by a
Chinese company and also there werereservations from various quarters
of Industry about the same. I too had
apprehension over this a bit, however
I decided to join Huawei in January
2011.
In the initial phase, I couldnt
understand which way I have to look
in to it. However after completion of
the induction programme I understood
the companys policies, processes and
culture etc.
Huawei has strong culture
which is basically evolving around
the customer and employees. It also
taught about how to do the hard work,
dedication and commitment towards
excelling the customer delight. It is
totally a system driven and process
oriented one which is unique in
nature.
It recognises the employees
who demonstrate the Huawei Culture
and spirit. It also awards the people
at right time by way of public notices
and by entrusting them with multiple
responsibilities etc. In my opinion
would treat as the optimal Utilisation
of resources, which is mutually
benecial for employees as well as
the company.
It's highly appreciable the
efforts company puts in organising
cross cultural online Quiz, Cultural
programs, New year celebrations
etc (which are just a few to name
in the list) gives an opportunity for
employees to understand each others
culture closely. This will also help in
building up and bonding relations.
Last but not least Huaweiadopts culture of Fen Dou. Fen
Dou as we all understand signies
Hardworking and creating a culture
of Fen Dou is one of the keys to the
success of the Organization.
The relationship between
Chinese and Indian staff is cordial,
warm, friendly and helpful. There
are many instances where we have
landed in tough situations had been
addressed together with the same
spirit, which has ultimately not only
resolved the issue but also gained
condence and appreciation from the
Customer. The best way to enhance
the relationship is by arranging
team building programmes, more
interaction and keeps helping nature.
The major accomplishments
which are unanimously accepted and
appreciated by the customers are
about Huaweis speed of delivery
and implementation of network
roll out and the performance of
the system in terms of hardware
stability and ease of manageability.
Adopting and moulding to the
customer requirements, customised
and innovative solutions to delight
customer.
Our family is always helpful
and understanding in nature. I always
ensure that the work life balance is
maintained to ensure some valuable
time would be spend with my family
because of our work nature which
demands 24*7. Recently one of such
occasion happened when management
declared the additional holidaysduring Independence Day celebrations
which helped me to take my family
away and spent quality time with
them. This is really a good thought by
the company and appreciated by the
family too. As I used to be on business
trip on Mumbai where I used to return
late night after 15 days on Friday
Night around 02:00 am and it really
kept me surprised my small daughter
(7 years old) along with son and
wife used to be waiting at the gate.
After reaching house daughter used
to start crying and say papa which is
really touching my heart. After long
and hectic schedules of handling so
many issues, tough meetings with
customer, being with family removes
all tiredness and gets charged up to
face more challenges.

six months later. I know now that
Huawei is the right t for me.
Q: You have worked for Huawei
for about 12 years and are a veteran
here. What changes in Huawei's
business environments have you seenduring those years?
A: Through the IFS program,
Huawei's nancial competence has
been remarkably improved. I'm not
just talking about what the consultants
have provided for us, but also what
nancial managers at all levels have
learned from the process. The IFS
program broadened our horizons and
changed our mindset. Now we are
condent that our ideas, methods, andunderstanding of certain professional
areas are even better than some
leading enterprises. Next, we'll share
the knowledge and skills we've
learned from the IFS program with
more personnel in the Finance Staff
Team (FST) and further change the
way we think and work.
In terms of the business
environment, Huawei is unique in
the exible way they do business.
All businesses are carried out by
following the principle of customer-
centricity, which means all
departments should do things that can
create value for both customers and
the company. If the division of duties
becomes vague, all departments and
personnel work together to better meet
customer requirements. Although
this focus is confusing to some, it
is exactly this focus that allows for
Huawei's features and advantages.
Responsibility andUnderstanding
Q:What do you think the effects
of the IFS program are on you and
nancial departments?
A: I was more involved in the
GL, R&A, and TPP project. The
GL project was especially thought-
provoking because we learned
IBM's accounting organizations,
processes, routine tasks, and
accounting positions. Before IFS,
Huawei accounting was mainly abouttransaction processing and report
preparation. No one cared whats
truly about of those numbers in the
nancial reports and no one analyzed
nancial reports. However, analyses
are key tasks of IBM's accountants.
What we learned from the program
was that accountants should ensure
that nal nancial report results
are true and fair. To achieve this
objective, accountants must rstbe able to analyze and understand
substance of business transactions
and events before preparing nancial
reports in accordance with accounting
standards and policies following
operation guidance is not enough.
Only when nancial statements is
true and fair can then be used for
business management. Inspired by the
IFS program, accounting departments
began to make plans and had
accountants analyze nancial reports.
The Report Analysis Dept was set
up in HQ. Report analysis was also
deployed in all accounting processes
and accounting SSCs. This was a
big change for Huawei's accounting
departments, which plays a key role
in guaranteeing nancial reports true
and fair, and add value to accounting
services that we provide to CFOs.
Q: You mentioned that you
majored in nance. Why did you
choose to deal with accounting and
report analysis?
A: I studied nance for my
post-graduate degree and was
recruited by the treasury department
of Huawei. Later, I was assigned
to deal with nancial reports and
everything went well. So I thought
maybe my background in nance
helped me understand accounting.
You know, the accounting treatment
for nancial instruments is a very
complicated eld in the IFRS. With
a knowledge of nance, I can betterunderstand those standards and ensure
appropriate accounting treatments
and also be able to clearly explain to
management how nancial reports
reect those treasury activities. Many
people may think that accountant
is not a prestigious job. But if we
want nancial reports to accurately
reect businesses, accountants ll an
indispensable role in E2E business
management. I don't think accountantsare less important than other positions.
Entry-level accountants only deal with
transactions, but to become experts on
nancial report analysis, they should
have an in-depth understanding of
businesses and accounting.
Leveraging ExpertiseQ:What key roles do you think
an expert should play in business
development? Or should we say, howcan an expert exert inuence to the
largest extent?
A: I think the core value
of nancial experts is their
professionalism. I guess the question
is about whether we should separate
different career paths for nancial
managers and experts.
From my perspective, when a
team is too large, we need experts
who don't deal with administrative
issues but instead only focus on
professional issues. Administrative
issues will take away the most energy
and time of experts who handle both
administrative and professional issues.
What an expert should do is to focus
on in-depth research in the eld he/
she copes with. On the other hand, to
what extent an expert can exert his/
8/12/2019 Huawei People 244
11/40
HUAWEI PEOPLE 9
her inuence relies on the attitude
of the administrative manager. If an
administrative manager takes expert
opinions seriously and can not only
understand the opinions but also make
correct judgments based on businessrequirements, that is ideal. An
administrative manager should also
have professional knowledge.
Q: You were awarded the
gold medal for teams (budget
transformation project team) in
2003 and the gold medal award for
individuals in 2004. Would you like to
tell us something about that?
A: In 2003 and 2004, Huawei
had a transformation program aimedat managing product lines as prot
centers. There was a corresponding
project team that was responsible for
developing the planning, budgeting,
and accounting system for product
lines. I was in charge of leading the
accounting solution team that won the
gold medal. I think the individual gold
medal award was mainly for my work
on building the multi-dimensional
management report system. Before
the transformation program,
management reports were used only
for collecting data. At that time, the
group's data was generated based on
simple and rough calculations of data
from the nancial reports of Huawei
Technologies Co., Ltd. When I was
assigned to take charge of accounting
solutions, I developed the multi-
dimensional consolidation reporting
framework. Under this framework,
we could obtain detailed data from
every subsidiary, consolidate and
eliminate, and nally generate
multi-dimensional consolidated
reports. The current BIS system
is based on the multi-dimensional
management report system. With
overseas business development and
an increasing number of subsidiaries,
this framework is crucial for multi-
dimensional management reports.
The previous method was not able to
support businesses.
Passion and FocusQ: Would you like to share
with us your experience becoming an
expert of competency & qualication
(C&Q) level 7?
A: I think this can be attributed
to three reasons. First, the company's
culture of pursuing excellence
and innovation creates a favorable
development environment for experts.
Second, I guess I'm lucky that my
superiors recognize and appreciatewhat I've done.
And I want to share with you
a Chinese saying which goes like
this: "Learning without thought is
labor lost; thinking without learning
is perilous." Think more about the
very job you are engaged in and
broaden your vision. As accountants,
we should learn to analyze and
understand businesses from the
perspective of the CEO and the CFOand consider how to make nancial
reports faithfully reect the status of
business operations. Also we should
learn how to clearly explain business
changes reected in nancial report
data.
I also want to emphasize
learning. It's not that people don't
think. It's just that they only get
limited information from their own
work and perhaps lack vision. I think
we should broaden that vision by
comparing ourselves with industrial
standards and learning from the best
practices in the industry.
Q: You're known for your
badminton skills on the Finance
Staff Team. Instead of attacking
players, you use more defensive
skills and always ght to the very
end. Some people gave you the
nick name "Tenacity". Do you think
it has something to do with your
characteristics?
A: Well, I used to like playing
badminton. Now many peoplearound play badminton better than
I did. As for the nickname, I think,
everyone has his own style which
can be represented in everything in
their work and life. Maybe "tenacity"
is my style. I loved badminton, and
even was obsessive about it when I
was a postgraduate student. I wouldn't
stop playing it even when it got dark
outside. When I was lying in bed,
it was still playing in my mind. Ithought about how to play it well
and believed that the only reason
why I couldn't return the badminton
every time was because I wasn't
concentrating enough to anticipate the
badminton's movement. Of course,
concentration alone was not enough. I
also needed to get the timing right.
We need passion for whatever
we do, both work and games. Passion
motivates us to research, learn, and
improve.

10 HUAWEI PEOPLE
It was 2005, September to be
exact. Spring in Buenos Aires,
Argentina, was just about to start.
I was a lonesome translator in the
South American Paris, as some
people call the city we live in. A friend of mine
advised me to send a CV to a major Chinese
company recently established in Buenos Aires
Huawei was its name. The company was
hardly known in Argentina back then. Gosh! I
did not even know how to pronounce it.
The large company was in the process
of hiring professionals to establish a pool
of translators who would be in charge of
translating large volumes of documentation for
different purposes. I sent my CV I had no
idea what was yet to come...
I was teaching the usual lesson in my
Friday morning class when my cell phone
vibrated. Huawei people were calling me;
they wanted to see me for an interview. On
Monday, I arrived at Huawei representative
ofce in Argentina wearing a tie and a smile.
The interview went smoothly, and people were
nice and friendly. A reserved, casually-dressed
lady led me to the Department Managers
ofce. The manager was a Chinese engineer
who explained what the company was looking
for by making the crazy attempt to hire me
and also tried to nd out why he should hire
me. After a few days, I started working for
the big Chinese telecommunications companyunder the advice of my father...work hard and
you will do ne he said. I still remember his
words.
At rst, our translation department
was comprised of only ve people and me
the rookie. Soon thereafter, a department
of 10 professional translators was set up;
a pool comprised of energetic and young
professionals who were eager to grow within
the large telecommunications giant. Now, let
us take a look at some side effects that were
diagnosed within our department as time
went by and as we became increasingly more
familiar with one another. Of course I am not
referring to any illness -not at all- but to funny
personality traits shared by most co-workers
in our ofce, all of which make our everyday
ofce experience easy to handle and... guess
what...really enjoyable! All our traits and
habits come to rescue us from the routine of
corporate life, a sort of lifejacket we hold on to
in order to survive the rapid pace of our own
lives; these habits can be transformed into tips
we can give you to dodge the heavy toil of
everyday ofce work. This is what I refer to as
being Huaweitized. In our TSC, everyone is
deeply Huaweitized. We always ask the same
questions everyday: Is our tomorrow the
12thOctober in China? Is it tomorrow already
there? When is this project due? How can
I pronounce this name? So... if I nish my
translation tomorrow at 4:00 pm local time,
when will the PM receive it in China? etc.
Other common unsettling thoughts: Where
have I put my calendar? Oh! I opened
the memory in exclusive mode once again!
Ouch!. Everyday the same. All of these
everyday questions come together with funny
replies we make to try to have everyone smile
and loosen up a bit. Yours truly has even goneas far as sleeping on the desk during lunch
hour a sort of power nap that keeps me going
for another 4 hours! This became a nice and
refreshing habit I sort of picked up when I
visited HQ in China in Feb. 2009.
The process of Huaweitization has
turned us into very distinctive and peculiar
individuals, I shall explain: They say there is

always a clown in the class, right? Well, the
same applies to our TSC nowadays. Let me
put it simple: theres a clown, a sleepy-head, a
sportsperson, a quasi-lawyer, a cook, an animal
lover, a rock star, a practical mind, the new
rookie and the person who glues us all together
every day. We know who they are - we need
no explanation. I just wish you could come
and meet us...you will soon experience the joy
of working in a pleasant and extremely happy
environment where everyone has their own
distinctive way of dealing with their everyday
tasks. And where everyone is encouraged to
bring new ideas to the workplace and put them
into practice to improve the way we work.
When it comes to being Huaweitized, all
of us have some special trait. Me? I have beencalled many things: the singer, the dancer,
the clown, but hey! I have been called
worse! So I am proud and happy to be part of
a funny group of professionals who work hard
(to the point of losing our heads not literally,
of course) in the antipodes of the world so that
our coworkers in Headquarters can get our
Spanish documents one day ahead of us (again,

They always say time changes things,
but you actually have to change them yourself.
When I saw this sentence quoted by a famous
abstract painter Andy Warhol in my notebook, I
suddenly recalled the rst time I met my mentor
Li Fangfang, her English name is Corinne.
The rst impressionTwo years ago, on a very beautiful
morning, I went to the ofce to start my rst
workday after nishing the one-month period
training course. My boss took me to a girl who
was seriously focusing on her computer and
said to me She will be your mentor. Then the
girl smiled to me and told me her name was Li
Fangfang, but I could also call her Corinne,
which was a sweet name for a mentor if you
could say. She was very beautiful and had a
delicate face. She wore a black pair of glasses
and had a black smooth straight hair. All of these
were the rst impression she set on me on her
physical side. However, after subsequent days,
I realized that she was not only a woman of
physical treats but a package of brainy beautiful
woman. A super woman indeed.

Excel geniusShe is an expert of sorting out lots of
complicated data in a very short time. As you
know, using a spreadsheet application such as
Excel, is a major advantage if youre in the contract
management and registration team. During my
rst year in Huawei, I found out that the daily
report of Asia Pacic Region was always under
the responsibility of Corinne. It was simple for her
to sort out all the contract documents sent by my
colleagues in a very short time and formed into
a daily report, which I admired on doing so that
I tried to learn from this positive attitude. Every
year during the quarter business sprint, plenty of
contracts had been signed in the overseas contract
document system in the last days of these quarters.
All my colleagues were extremely busy during that
time. Corinne would actively send us the contract
list on the system to process. But my super mentor,
living up to her name as a Boss, only took her a few
minutes to make all these excel documents, which
made her an excel genius well indeed.
Patient & tender teacherIn the rst month under her supervision,
Corinne started to teach me the basic and essential
knowledge of contract registration. Lots of times, I
asked her how to process contracts, register them in
the system and if the contracts have problems, how
to deal with colleagues to resolve those concerns.
Amazingly, even though she was quite busy she
always replied me punctually and showed me the
specic operation patiently. Corinne still was very
tender to me even when I made mistakes over time.
One time, I registered the wrong contract entity of
several contracts into the system, and the colleagues
in other department sent me an e-mail and asked me
to revise all these incorrect information within one
day. I was very worried at that time and understood
the severity of wrong contracts within the company
system would then lead to further more problems.
Then Corinne helped me once she got the e-mail
and encouraged me to face it strongly and actively.
Trouble could never disappear unless you face it
actively affectionately she said. Now I looked back
on that time and today had a great accuracy rate in
contract registration. And even won the honor of
CSO Shared Center in H1 Personal Reward,
all of this I considered was inuenced by the patient
and tender teacher, Corinne.
Sincere & helpful sisterThis August, I went to Philippines on business
trip to settle different issues of Philippines contracts,
as well train Sales and Product Team how to process
awlessly contracts in the right way. It was my
rst time going abroad and was very much excited.
Before I left, Corinne told me like my sister about
the key points I should pay attention to when I was
abroad. She shared with me her rst experience
when she went to Indonesia and told me where
I could get help from the company website. One
night, I asked Corinne for a complicated case I never
met, she explained to me immediately with great
patience, and even called back to analyze the details
although she was at home at night. Returning from
the trip in the Philippines was an exhilarating one
especially knowing that my teacher was waiting for
me back at my home country.
I do appreciate and am thankful for my super
mentor, Corinne. Her positive working attitude and
excellent character will keep me making greaterperformance in the following years.
Thank you very much. Corinne!

My path from
Australia to
the UK and
to Huawei
was full
of twists and turns and chance. After
working as a trainer for another
international telecommunications
manufacturer for many years around
the Asia and Pacic region; economic
conditions meant that I found myself
mid-2004 without a job. Always
looking for a little adventure; I tried
applying for various training jobs in
exotic places like Thailand, Finland,
and Germany until I was picked-
up by Huawei UK as a Broadband
Access & Core Trainer. I didnt know
it then but that was the start of my
eight years of adventure and growth
with Huawei Training.
My growth within the
Western European
training centreThe last eight years of my
adventure with Huawei have seen a
remarkable change for the Western
European Learning Services
Department. It was in January
2005 when I started my (then) new
job with Huawei in the Western
European Training Centre. At the
time the Training Department was
in its infancy and when I started
with Huawei; I was the third local
employee hired in a total training team
of four. The team was small but full
of enthusiasm and energy.
For the next seven years I tried
to keep the energy and grew from a
trainer to a senior trainer and then
to a team leader. My knowledge and
delivery ability starting with only
NGN, grew to include FN Access,
Datacoms, IMS Core, CS Core and
parts of PS Core Networks. During
this time as a trainer I taught many
customers across Europe both within
WEU and CEE regions receiving
many positive customer feedback
comments like:
One of the best trainers/
instructors I have met ever.
While some tier-1 WEU
customers even specically requested
my delivery services for new training
requests: Would appreciate to keep
Adrian as teacher.
When I joined Huawei
the main (and only) activity was
providing Instructor Lead Knowledge
Transfer (classroom training) on
Huawei products to customers.
However, over time the range ofservices have expanded to provide
many other Learning Services like:
Technology training, e-Learning, Live
Virtual Classroom, Video events,
Technical Competency Assessments,
Competency Consulting, etc. It
is through the close customer
relationships and the new service
offerings; as well as the successful
delivery of these new learning
services that has fed the growth of the
Western European Learning Services
Department.
After eight years of personal
growth within Huawei Im now
the UK&I Training Manager and a
member of a thirty strong Western
European Learning Services team
together advancing customer
relationships and the Huawei Training
brand. A huge improvement compared
to the small team I started with many
years ago.
Working as an instructor over
many years has given me a unique
insight into customer training related
issues and pain-points that have
assisted enormously when conducting
my UK&I Training Manager duties.
Within the last year Ive been able to
introduce a large and comprehensive
certication and e-Learning program
for LTE and EPC into twenty
markets for the largest Global Mobile
Operator in the World. As well asinstigate, create, manage and deploy

Customers the human
side of teachingBecause a technical trainer when
teaching is always customer facing
trainers spend the majority of their
time in and around customers and
over time make many friends. Even
after many years some of my students
are still my friends. The training
and the after training activities like
sports, sightseeing, and dinning help
to understand the mindset of our
customers. This assists to build the
customer relationships and associated
training satisfaction that are necessary
to show the customer the value of
Huawei Learning Services.
When I rst joined Huawei in
2005 I was sent to Huawei HQ in
China to learn Huawei products to
prepare myself for customer teaching.
I was based in China for a littleover a month and during that time
participated in quite a few courses.
One of the courses was an Algerian
customers engineers course which I
sat-in. Amazingly six years later I had
the privilege of spending time with the
same customers walking around and
dinning in Paris when I was teaching
the same customers on a new course.
Such a small world.
No matter if at school or as anindustrial trainer a good teacher is
never forgotten and is always held in
high regard by students.
Training is not all work
and no playBeing a trainer for the last eight
years has been a very interesting
and satisfying job. Not only do
you get to learn about all the new
industry technologies and the new
Huawei products. But you also get
to meet and work with and teach
many different interesting customers.
You also get to travel to different
places and see many different
parts of the world and have many
varied experiences and keep many
memories.
Travel an advantage
being a TrainerOver the seven years I travelled
as a technical customer trainer for
Huawei I amassed many travel
experiences and memories. These
include seafood festivals in Spain &
Ireland; a City festival with oats,
costumes and dances in Lisbon
Portugal; a music festival in an old
castle and a midnight museum visit
in Germany; visits to ancient cities
and un-spoilt islands in Greece
and Croatia; skiing in 20 metres
snow drifts in the mountains in
Bulgaria; learning about historical
battlegrounds in Belgium; enjoying
French cuisine in Paris & Leon;
driving a car from Vienna to Bansk
Bystrica during the night and riding
and commuting on my motorbike
to Hungary and Germany and while
working in Budapest and Darmstadt.
Unfortunately, travel does haveits bad points too: the weekends spent
travelling, the airport checking-in and
security queues, the lonely dinners
in dormitories or hotels, being away
from family and friends. However,
for me the last eight years as part of
Huawei Learning Services have more
good times than bad times.
Standing on theshoulders of giants
In 2006 I was honoured to
receive a Western European Top
Staff Award for my work ethic
and commitment to the Training
Department for the years 2005-2006.
In 2008 I also received an award for
courseware development and in 2010-
2011 I received a long serving staff
award in association with Huawei
10 years in Europe. In 2006 when I
had to give a speech when collecting
my Top Staff award I used the theme
of standing on the shoulders of
giants. This message is stamped on
some of the UK pound coins. Only by
incorporating the work my colleagues
were doing and standing on their
shoulders was I able to succeed.
Despite personally receiving various
awards over the years it is only
through the dedication of everyonewithin the Training Department
(both Western European Region
and Global) and the associated
teamwork that such a small team
can continuously succeed to provide
a world class training service to
customers.
Only when customers
experience the successful delivery
of services will they be willing topurchase further services and allow
the Huawei Training brand to grow
just as Ive grown.

Comprehending Huawei Core Values
Core Values
Richard Branson
has said, If
you look after
your internal
customers you
dont have to worry about the external
customers.
If we were to take any
successful business leaders, we will
consistently nd that most of the new
and innovative business ideas come
from individuals who operate more
from their own observations and
insights rather than others analytical
research. They are so tuned in to
observing, engaging and empathizing
with their customers, that they
instinctively know what would turn
an average experience into a great
experience. Successful entrepreneurs
watch and empathize with customers
in shops, on planes, on the streets,
even in their homes and ask why
are people behaving in the way they
do and what can we do to make their
experience better. And its this very
belief in achieving customer delight
that has lead to Huaweis success
today.
Being part of this success
story I also strongly believe in this
philosophy of customer rst. I Joined
the Huawei Family in May 2011.Initially I was a part of the GSDC
Recruitment team and my rst
customers were MS & BSS team. It
was an opportunity that presented me
with a lot of learning experiences.
Many people believe that Recruitment
is just a number game. Believe me
its not just a number game but it has
more to do with quality as well. Its
a role where the recruiter represents
organization to an external world to
create a brand image. We become
the face of Huawei. As per my
understanding, those HR who believe
in the principle of customer are the
ones who get the right talent into the
right roles more quickly than others.
So today as Huawei is one of the fast
growing organization, I take pride in
my contribution in my own small way
to attain the position.
I then moved to a role where
focus is more on customer relations.
A New role, New Manager, New
challenges - all this contributes to
new experiences in my profession.
Its always good to work with
different types of customers to
experience different qualities under
their leadership. There are instances
where Customer became my Manager
and Manager became my Customers.Today my responsibilities have
increased from a team to business
group. However while dealing with
my customers, I always remember the
saying When dealing with people,
remember you are not dealing with
creatures of logic, but creatures of
emotion. Each individual who has a
team has their own way of managing,
leading and following them. Here I
believe that Customer experience is
everything you do for your customers
and to them and how it makes them
feel. The for part includes those
services that makes life easier for
customers the smiles that leave
them feeling better and the outcomes
that leave them better off. Customer
Experience is all about feeling good
factor.

We keep

focused.
I think if we talked to most of our
customers they would not agree. My
opinion is that we are only contract
focused. We have aimed to get more
contracts because we thought this was
the way to grow at a maximum speed.
I am sure that our focus on getting
many contracts has been a way to
grow fast but I am equally convincedthat we now need to become truly
customer focused.
We have been trying to get more
business and to achieve that we have
said yes to anything from existing
and new customers. Companies who
have been in the telecom business for
a long time know that true customer
focus sometimes forces you to say
no to what customers ask you to do.
Customers do not always know whatis best for them.
Some of our customers are truly
capable of operating telecom networks.
Others are truly capable of offering
good service to their customers.
However few of our customers are
good at designing telecom systems.
I am not saying that we are good at
designing telecom systems either
yet but we need to become good at
designing telecom systems. We cannot

build a future on offering only lower
prices or on always saying yes to
customer requests.Until recently all we had to
do was to copy what one of our
competitors in the business had
already done. Our customers knew
what could be done because one
or several of our competitors had
already done it.
Now we are no longer a
follower! This is a completely
different game. This game we do not
know how to play. We have to learnhow to play it.
In many industries there
is a very sophisticated dialogue
between customers and suppliers.
The customer asks for a new feature
or asks for a solution to a problem.
In some cases the wish from the
customer is expressed in the form of a
requirement.
The supplier listens to the
customer and goes home to considerwhat the customer has asked for.
Competent suppliers never feed
requirements from customers straight
into development projects. They
always consider many aspects of
the wish or need presented by the
customer. One such aspect is whether
other customers have the same need
or wish. Another aspect is whether the
solution suggested by the customer is
a good solution.
More often than not the supplier
comes up with what he thinks is a
better or lower cost solution. Thisbetter solution is presented to the
customer in the hope that it will be
accepted.
Often the supplier comes
up with an altogether different
suggestion and the dialogue goes on
through several iterations.Competent
customers appreciate this kind of
challenging dialogues!
Different customers behave
very differently! Some have anumber of technically very competent
employees wanting to inuence the
implementations of solutions. Other
customers do not. All they want is a
quick solution.
I want us to become truly
customer focused and not only
contract focused. Sometimes it is a
good idea to give a contract to one of
our competitors making them waste
lots of efforts on a stupid idea for onesingle customer while we can use our
competence to develop something
really useful that can benet many
customers!
Remember that the cost of
developing a feature is not the most
critical. What is most critical is how
we best invest our limited capable
resources into new features or
versions. Anything we develop will
cause life cycle costs.

In October 2012,
Huawei Germany
started the student
exchange program
China Insights in
cooperation with ve distinguished
German universities. On 23rd/24
th
January, 2013 the selected 14
students participated in a preparation
workshop in Berlin. The program is
planned as long term CSR activity
to foster the intercultural exchange
and to create opportunities through
education.
Students from the universities
with RWTH Aachen University,
University of Bonn, Goethe
University Frankfurt am Main,
Humboldt-University Berlin and
the Technical University Munich
could send their applications till 30 th
November, 2012 to Huawei Germany
Public Affairs & Communications
team. The universities were selected
according to their high international
reputation and their location in the
cities where Huawei operates in
Germany.
Project patron is Professor Dr.
Eberhard Sandschneider, Otto Wolff-
Director of the Research Institute,
German Council on Foreign Relations
(DGAP), a well-known China expert
and analyst in Germany with several
years of experience in Asian studies.
Dr. Sandschneider appreciates this
program as important step for a better
understanding between cultures:
Such experiences shape young
people and help them to widen their
personal horizon. I am convinced,
that Germany and China will further
approach each other through such a
program.
In March 2013, the students
will travel to China to start with a 10
days cultural immersion course at
the Beijing University of Language
and Culture, learning Chinese and
being introduced to Chinese culture.
Afterwards, the students will have the
chance to get hands-on experience in
Huaweis headquarters in Shenzhen
for more than two weeks.
Through this program we
enable young people with enthusiasmabout technology to get to know the
Chinese economy and culture. After
the theoretical part in Beijing they
will have the opportunity to collect
practical experience in our company,
states Olaf Reus, Director Public
Affairs & Communications Dept.
Huawei Germany.
The exchange program was
announced at the selected universities
with yers and posters. The interestfrom the students was very high;
about 200 applications reached the
PAC Germany team, which made the
selection very difcult.
Through this student exchange
program China Insights Huawei
demonstrates to be a proactive partner
and a good corporate citizen fullling
its social responsibility by promoting
young people with an intercultural
exchange and practical experiences in
ICT basics. It meets the Huawei CSR
strategies creating opportunities
through education, supporting
the local society and fostering the
intercultural dialog. The positive
awareness for Huawei is increased
and it also improves the employer
branding among graduates.

My second surgeryI had my second surgery in April
2012. I had another tumor removed
this time in different location. When I
saw the blue-striped patient clothing
at the hospital, my feeling was
complicated. This time, a general
anesthesia was induced, something
that I hated most, for my life was
at stake and I could probably never
wake up after the surgery. I didnt feel
that I was part of the ghting against
cancer, and that was the reason that
I dont like general anesthesia.My
anesthesiologist was the same cute
and handsome guy in my last surgery.
He put an oxygen mask on my face
and said the exact same words, Take
a deep breath of oxygen. Its free of
charge. Before I could hear what he
said next, I fell asleep. When I woke
up, the surgery was already over.
The tumor was 2cm by 2cm, and
fortunately, it was benign.
My daughter is a big girlnow
Newnew was only 3 years only
when I had my rst surgery. She
now stands 3 feet 6 and is a big girl
in Grade 3 of the Kindergarten. She
can make telephone calls, sing songs,
and she loves Barbies and the snow
white doll. I stayed in the hospital for
some time for the surgery, and one
day Newnew said to her grandma, I
missed Mom yesterday and I cried.
On New Years Eve, she wrote me a
letter that put me to tears.
Dear mom,
I am writing this letter to say
that I love you and miss you. Please
get well because I want to stay with
you every day. I will behave like a big
girl so you dont have to worry about
me. I like your presents and hope you
get well soon.
Love, Newnew
Happiness despite painsThe chemo therapy was long
and painful, so I listened to some
music as distraction. I like the Chinese
song Blue and White Porcelain.
It is really well written. The lines
beautifully piece up together a scene
of poem and tranquility. This greatly
distracted my attention and helped
alleviate the pain. I then realized that
art is not useless as many people think
from a practical point of view. It helps
you stay strong, and it is those things
that appear to be useless in normal
days help you in critical moments.
The therapy was long, so I had
plenty of time at hand. I followed my
heart doing things that I loved to do.
This was the time that I tried things
that I longed to do for a long time,
like reading novels, learning Beijing
opera, Kun opera, traditional Chinese
musical instruments, dances and
chess. I watched opera shows, set up
a microblog, and even wrote movie
reviews, in English. I really enjoyed
doing these things. I loved dancing, so
I joined a dancing group. At rst I was
shy and danced in the corner, but later
got bolder and eventually I was in the
leading row.
During the therapy, I had a lot
of time alone, and I came to see what
I am. I often wonder, in those long
and miserable days, why life is full of
miseries and what I should live for.
Of course, not daring to die or not
knowing how to die can be a reason,
but its far from satisfactory. My death
would bring pain and grief to my
family, but thats not enough. I feel
that in the remaining days I should be

responsible for my life.
For my family and friends, I
love you just because I love. And I
expect no reciprocal love, and do not
expect you to do something to meet
my wishes. Expecting reciprocal
love is an exchange, and want of
exchange results means grievances
and unhappiness.
I dont know when I will die,
but from today till that day, I would
live every day in the way that I want,
so that when that day comes, I will
fall in my direction.
Sad thingsSad things happened during
the past two years. Some people that
I knew died in the hospital. One of
them was still chatting with me a
month ago. After the surgery, I was
never able to hold my child up.
Every day in the past two years,
I had to drink herbal medicine of
about 450g, which is the size of a
basketball, and sometimes the biggest
bottle could not hold it all.
Alright, so much for the
unpleasant things, so lets talk about
pleasant things.
The unforgettablegathering
July 23, 2012 was the two year
anniversary of my surgery. According
to our cancer-ghters words, the rst
half year is the peak of relapse, and
the two years is the second. This is
my second birthday, my two-year
birthday in my new life.
On this occasion, I would like
to invite my colleagues in Shenzhen
who had been so kind to me during
the two years. Here is the invitation
letter.
My dear friends,
I would like to invite you all
to a meal. This is to appreciate
your kindness over the years. I will
personally cook the dishes and
hope that this will bring you loving
memories.
This past two years had been
special to me. Two years ago, I was
struck by this unexpected illness. I am
really glad that you were around and
helped me to get to my feet. Thanks
for your encouragement and support.
Well, humble guys like you
would probably say, nah, nah, it was
nothing; we didnt help much; it was
all your strength that carried you
through this. But I must tell all of you
that without you, I would endure this
experience in a much worse manner.
So all of you are very important to my
life.
Our team is a very common
team, and we are all common people.
But all of you helped me with your
love so that I could live through
those dark days. I believe that all of
us would do the same thing if this
happened to someone else. Shenzhen
was new to all of us when we rst
came here. So we had no one to rely
upon but just each other. After all
these years, we can trust each other
in the team. And thats something that
gives me warmth in the cold days.
So please do come to share this
day...
Well, my original intention
was a simple dinner as a token
of appreciation. When I told my
colleagues about this, everyone was
excited and willing to help. One of
them said Please, we can celebratethis at my place which is bigger.
Another said, We will do the
shopping. Dont worry about it. So
this meal treat became a gathering
celebrating my recuperation. They
even set up a project team, held a
kick-off meeting, set a timetable and
work breakdown structure. The only
thing that I did was to cook my best
dish, the hot spicy chicken.
On the gathering day, I put
on the dress that was not my attire
for a long time, and went to Meis
spacious condo. I was a little worried
before I got there because I expected
it to be hilarious rather than sad and
retrospective.
But my worries turned into
nothing when the door opened, and I
saw a few kids jumping and yelling.
Then someone brought some whistles,
and the kids were excited, and pretty
soon the whole room was full of
whistling sounds. Its just the kind of
feeling that I expected.
Although I planned to cook
a few dishes, I had only enough
strength to make one, the Geleshan
Spicy Chicken. They did not allow
me to handle it myself. The chicken
was chopped by Cao, fried by Wen,
and what I did was to nag, chop it
thinner, turn up the stove, and add a
little more spice.
After the meal, we had a
karaoke, and tears blurred my sight
when the familiar and touching lyrics
owed through my ears.
Special thanksI want to give special thanks to
my family and my friends. Without
you, I would never be able to get
through all this. I know that for
the most part of the therapy, I had
to handle it alone, and there were
times that I felt I could endure no
longer. But it was your precious
encouragement that gave me a chance
to take a break and move on.Each of us has a hero deep
inside of our heart. We have a power
and strength that we can hardly
imagine, and it is through those hard
times that you would nd a life-time
opportunity to change you forever.

A
heavy snow hit Romania in January,
creating perfect snow slopes for many
skiing resorts like Brasov, thus we
took this good opportunity to go skiing
there, a city famous for its legendary
vampire castle and breathtaking snow view. The trip is veryrewarding and brings another piece of happy and unforgettable
experience into my lifelong memory.
The picturesque snow view on our way to Brasov proves
that it is worthwhile getting up so early at the weekend. Life
can be more enjoyable if you'd like to take adventures and
make good use of time.

Brasov is situated at the foot of mountains, and
it is about 30 minutes drive to the ski resort. The age-
old city is less frequented by tourists in winter than the
other three seasons and most of the tourists are here for
skiing. I like the old and weather-beaten architectures
and tranquil roads in Brasov; it always stimulates my
wild imagination of many stories related to the city.
At the mouth of a skiing resort, the cloud-dotted
blue sky, snow-coated pine trees, and people clad in
skiing outt form a beautiful picture. No matter if you
are a skier or not, you are also served with a sumptuous
feast to your eyes. Brasov will never let you down and
go back "empty-handed".
Snow is the best friend for kids in winter; they can
make snow man, have snowball ghts, build snow castles,
go skiing or just enjoy the terric snow view. Any of these
activities can bring them a lot of fun and become a great
treasure to enrich their childhood memory. " Oh,stop it! I
surrender!" Three boys are ghting by snow balls to theirhearts' content.
Watching others skiing skillfully, I don't think it is
difcult to learn ski, but when I wear the skiing boots and
skates, it is extremely hard for me to keep balance. After
many hysterical and horrible screams and fall-downs in
about 3 hours, I nally grasped basic skills like braking
and deceleration, and can ski for about 50 meters at one
stretch.
Apart from the fun from skiing, the snow view is
also a great feast to your eyes. This view can trigger a
ood of imaginations. With the backdrop of blue sky, thehouse in distance is capped with snow and surrounded
by white pine trees, and nearby stretches out a blanket of
snow ground. In front of such a nature layout, I cannot
help miss my family members and my friends in China.
Homey touch! What are you thinking about when viewing
this photo?
If you can ski, it is 100% sure that your life will be
more wonderful than others. Skiing brings you the feeling
of ying like a bird, which is believed to be a long-
cherished dream of human beings. Your ability to balance
yourself and zigzag freely in different kinds of slopes,
and the feeling of "ying" past other skiers can denitely
boost your condence and fuel your desire for life.
Even at last I still
