In the food production and processing environment your cleaningobjective is to produce surfaces free from debris and food residueswhich may harbour bacteria.Hugh Crane systems provide:

. improved cleaning efficiency

• simplicity of operation

• ease of maintenance

• high quality components

• hygienically designed cabinets minimising bacteria harbouring

• low water usage

Pressures and Temperatures

On the following pages we address the different pressure and flowrequirements for a wide variety of environments.

Inadequate pressure can often result in poor cleaning results.Excessive pressure will cause aerosols and splashing which increasesthe risk of both cross contamination and equipment damage.

Typically, washing temperatures over 65˚C are commonly used inmeat production; however heat can have a detrimental effect on somechemicals and can even fix some proteins such as egg.

Hugh Crane engineers are here to advise on the appropriatepressures, temperatures, flow rate and chemical applicationequipment needed for your processing requirement. Please call us on 01493 750072.

LOWPRESSURE

5

Inside a typical wall mounted lowpressure unit with air injection facility.

Typically 0 - 500psi, 0 - 35 bar

Low pressure wash systems offer several advantages, and can be very effective when used in the correct environment.

Lower pressure reduces the risks of:

• Aerosols

• Splash-back

• Cross contamination

• Water ingress

• Personal injury

These points make a more user friendly system, however due to thelower pressure a higher flow rate is normally required, which can leadto increased heating and running overheads. This is usually offset bylower maintenance costs.

Another consideration is that to produce good quality foam atpressures below 500 psi / 35 bar requires air injection from an outsidesource. This need not be a problem as long as compressed air isavailable, as a stabilised foam air injection system can be installed, which could be wall or trolley mounted giving the versatility you require.

Hugh Crane will undertake a free survey to help assess the suitability of low pressure for your environment.

MEDIUMPRESSURE

Typically 500-1000 psi / 35-70 bar

Systems operating at these pressures are becoming themost popular choice in the food processing environment.A well designed system with the correct flow rate can bejust as effective as systems with higher pressures.

Medium pressure offers many of thebenefits of low-pressure:

• Low aerosols

• Reduced cross contamination

• Reduced water ingress

• Reduced personal injury risk

Unlike low pressure systems it is possible to createreasonable quality foam without the aid of compressedair by using dynamic lances.

Our design team have developed a range of advancedpump systems with fully modulating return valves, whichunlike most systems, do not waste energy by continuingto pump a percentage of the flow back to the tank whendemand is increased. These systems offer the user achoice of pressure and flow so that more delicate areascan be cleaned with confidence thereby making interimcleaning easier.

All systems are supported by on site maintenanceprograms and extensive staff training which makes themvery attractive and cost effective packages.

HIGHPRESSURE

7

Typically 1,000 psi / 70 bar plus

In environments such as abattoirs, poultry sheds andfarm buildings high pressure systems are ideal. Thepressure can be combined with chemicals and heat togive a very powerful cleaning effect.

Advantages:

• Easy removal of stubborn greasy soiling• Detergents can be easily foamed• Flexibility

Elements to consider:

• Equipment damage• Aerosols• Health and safety

Flexibility:

A well developed high pressure system will provide thebenefit of multi pressure outlets to ensure you have theflexibility for changing production areas as you add newmachinery and vary production methods.

Centralised multi-pump systems with selectable flow and pressure are worth considering as you can addpumps as your demand increases. You may require astand-alone diesel or petrol powered unit or perhapsa small single lance electric model. Whatever yourrequirements you can rest assured we will be able toguide you to the correct solution.

All wash systems are available with on site maintenance programs andsupported by comprehensive training of your staff.

DOSINGMETHODS

12

The need for precise dosing of chemical productsis a critical part of the production process.

To fulfil this requirement different methods can beemployed, including:

Proportional Dosing

The main flow of water through the unit drives a piston, directly linked to this is a second smaller piston that liftsthe chemical and injects it into the water stream. Byadjusting the stroke of this second piston, the dosingrate will change.

Timed Dosing

This method can be used to effectively dose tanks orvessels. An electronic timer and pump unit isprogrammed to issue initial and top-up doses.

Conductivity Dosing

Some chemicals affect the electrical conductivity ofwater; this can be used to accurately maintain thechemical content. By inserting a probe into the vessel tobe dosed, conductivity levels are monitored andchemical is automatically added as and when required.

Venturi Dosing

The water flow is fed through a venturi, which pulls thechemical into the stream via an orifice, the size of whichdetermines the injection rate.

If you require any assistance deciding upon the bestmethod for your application, please give us a call, wewill be glad to assist.
