Human Work Design – The Quantum Leap in Work System PlanningBenefit from our software and trainings on MTM-HWD®
Faced with aging staff and increasing cost pressure, a high level productivity to attain a leading competitive position can only be achieved through ergonomically well-designed work processes and products. For this rea-son, the German MTM Association makes this the focus of its research and development.
Under the title Human Work Design (HWD®), a new MTM building block system combining work and ergonomics planning for the first time ever is being developed in cooperation with industrial enterprises (Audi AG, Daimler AG, Miele & Cie. KG, Volkswagen AG) and scientific partners (IAD, Institute of Industrial Engineering at Darmstadt University of Technology and IAW, Institute of Industrial Engineering and Ergonomics at RWTH Aachen): MTM-HWD®. A quantum leap in work systems planning.
The ObjectiveThis development project aims to improve the descrip-tion and design of human work processes.
Being a totally new type of building block system, MTM-HWD® provides standardized process descrip-tions as well as a methodical and biomechanical as-sessment of work processes. In doing so, Human Work Design focusses on process type “series production” (as defined in the framework of MTM building block systems) represented by large batch production and supports the ergonomic assessment tools applied in numerous companies. One of these tools is EAWS (Er-gonomic Assessment Sheet), the internationally ack-nowledged standard method for the identification of ergonomic risks in work processes.

MTM-HWD® – Advantages of the Building Block System:
Visualization: Motion model (body – head – arms – hands) derived from human beings Productive and safe: Basic value is oriented towards productive and ergonomic work design From a single source: Interlocking method and ergonomics Understanding: Promotion of interdisciplinary cooperation Standard: Process language for benchmarks with reference to standard performance International: Worldwide promotion by the International MTM Directorate

The FeaturesMTM-HWD® is a motion model that has been derived from the functions of the human body. It enables the chronological descrip-tion of human motion sequences by using MTM process building blocks.
This motion model covers individual body motions, head motions and the motions of the hand-arm system, as well as postures during and at the end of a cycle or sequence. As mat-ters stand, the description comprises more influencing factors than are required by bio-mechanical assessment methods and time- related evaluation.
Pictograms for Clear Understanding

The usage of pictograms offers fast access to and clear understanding of the subject of process modeling. By coupling and synchronizing ergonomics and time, the building block system MTM-HWD® heralds the start of a new age in productivity management systems for planning and designing human work.
