Editorial

Week 5. End of the Road (and also a

CSU parking pun). Term 1 done and

dusted. I write this stuffing my face

full of chocolate because I have noth-

ing left of any real nourishment in the

house. I think I will be living off it for

this last week as it seems post-easter

chocolate bunnies are cheaper then

real food.

Do you know what’s weird, eating a

chocolate bunny feet first instead of

starting at the ears. I mean what kind

of sick twisted person does that.

Not much has happened since last

weak with the closing of Uni on

Thursday, then the long weekend and

whole ‘lets buy each other chocolate’

thing. Did you know you can get or-

ganic milk chocolate eggs. Remember

when the world was a simpler place,

without all these organic options,

without all these people trying to be

cool because they think they are eat-

ing healthier because it’s organic. You

don’t just become healthier by eating

organic food, you still have to exersise

and be active, but sure keep telling

yourself eating organic chicken and

then sitting on the couch all day is

living healthy.

I dunno, I think all this chocolate is

getting to my head. Final fling this

week, yet another chance to drown

your sorrows at failing that assign-

ment or getting rejected by that girl

you liked. I hear people are going

on placement which means I might

actually get a parking spot this week.

hahahahaha who am I kidding, that

won’t happen. Good ol’ csu, you make

me laugh.

Enjoy final fling, enjoy your last week

before the break, submit stuff over the

break you lazy bums. Big thank you

to everyone who has submitted this

term you guys are the absolute best

people on campus by far, and forever

hold a special place in my heart.

Now I must go, I need another choc

fix.

The Social Sport Report

The Social Sport Report

Wow! Another huge week on the field and court this week. In pool A, the Pink Floyds continued their fine form with a very strong performance against the South Dream Team. The Yellow Fellows and Steward Superstars were very evenly matched with the result reflecting this. In pool B, Doman Knights showed that they can ace both netball and soccer, defeating Marties. It was a mixed bag of re-sults for the Siberian teams again this week with a win and a loss.

That’s all for this week, keep up the great attendance guys and remember to get down there and support your favourite teams!

Bullying Part 1

Bullying: A great threat in disguise

Now the regular classes have started at Charles Sturt University. I can see many bright faces with lot of dreams but for some , those dreams will be shattered if they are being bullied by their friends, boyfriends/girlfriends, social circle. It can happen at School, University, at work.

What is Bullying

Bullying is a great threat to our personality development.

A person can be bullied about his/her presence, family, etiquettes, studies, achievement, culture, gender, disability, race, caste, religion and many more factors.

It can be serious short-term or long term emotional and social consequences but will always stick to our conscious. Bullying can happen to anyone, anywhere and at any time. Bullying can happen anywhere, at school, at home, at work, in online social spaces, via text messaging or via email.

Who are the ones who Bully others

We can’t blame the victim at any chance. I know many examples of such person who are accused of bullying others but was not their fault directly. Either it was due to the disturbed childhood where parents were constantly fighting or at some instance they were not appreciated for the achievements. They remained Underdogs, may be you call them under-performers in the eyes of their parents. They were constantly compared with their siblings and in frustration, these poor children target others who fell easy prey to their activities. Sometimes people unintentionally bully others just for fun without thinking of the consequences. Very often, they bully others to take revenge of their past but I just wonder why don’t they understand that they are still doing the same which was done to them long back.

How bullying affect people

Bullying has a great effect on the mind of the victim. He/She feel isolated, depression, anger and a sense of jealousy towards other friends who were not bullied. They lack self-esteem, confidence and are always in a state of embarrassment or depression which will further affect their academic achievements.

They start losing trust and love in the relationships and are always lost in their own world. It will have negative impacts on the relationships with their kids, siblings, husband-wife relationship, Boss-employer relationship. The fatal point will be some may experience suicidal tendency. They want to end up with their so called useless life.

What is Cyber bullying

Cyber-bullying is another serious form of bullying which is penetrating in our life. Kids fell an easy prey to such stuff.

A recent online survey conducted by BoysTown among 548 young people across Australia found the most typical forms of cyberbullying include name calling, abusive comments, spreading rumours, threats of physical harm, being ignored or excluded, having opinions slammed, online impersonation and being sent rude or upsetting images. (Source :Kids Helpline. (2009). Cyberbullying: Experiences, impacts and interventions as described by Australian young people. Unpublished research report. Brisbane, Queensland: Megan Price)

Bullying Part 2

Common situations for cyberbullying to occur are shown in Figure below:

(Source : http://www.kidshelp.com.au/grownups/news-research/hot -topics/cyber-bullying.php)

Best ways to avoid Bullying

Ask for help from those persons whom you trust- friends, family and teachers – about what is happening to you and to discuss with them some ways of dealing with the problem.

Avoid the person who tries to bully you.

Stay with others who are your true friends

Have a positive attitude and thing it to be a bad nightmare.

Enjoy your life-it’s the utmost important thing to you.

Know your rights

Remember all are born-free and hence got the right to live his/her life on his/her own conditions. Everyone has the right to live, work, study and play in an environment free from bullying, harassment, discrimination and violence. No one deserves or asks to be bullied. You have a right to feel safe and to be treated fairly and respectfully. The Australian Human Rights Commission (1300 656 419) has a complaint handling service that may investigate complaints of discrimination, harassment and bullying.

My feet weaved to find bare

soil between tufts of lu-

cerne. Two paddocks down

one left. Somewhere in front

two kelpies bounded and

bumped into each other. I

couldn’t tell their panting

from my puffing. Some-

where on the road was my

dad, slowly cycling, a wob-

bling start to his new fitness

campaign. The challenge?

Who was going to get to the

homestead first!

It was in this moment that

I recalled a quote that has

been haunted me...

I was in the middle of an

awkward adolescence

(aren’t they all?) when I

first heard the saying ‘Less

is More’. It was quoted by

my Year 10 drama teacher

in reference to our act-

ing: don’t over act, aim for

realistic. I understood the

reference in that context,

but my philosophical mind

pondered on the saying and

still does.

To date I have found many

applications of the idea

‘Less is More’ and may

counterexamples too.

I will share these with you

using snippets from my

weekend.

Well, my Easter weekend

begun on Thursday night. I

managed to get my mobile

locked into the Wagga City

Library – which would not

open until Tuesday. Great!

A whole weekend without

a phone. Now this is a very

good is example of ‘less

is more’. To fill in the gaps: less

contact with the outside world =

more productive activity in current

moment.

How can you apply this?

• Less Telly = More Life

Turn of the f’ing telly. No really it’s

full of trash. You are wasting your

life watching it. The best way to

learn, relax, or laugh is to find it in

activity. If you’re going to use the

TV don’t troll through the trash

that is modern programming - get

quality DVDs of stuff you like (you

could try the big DVD collection in

the city library – and tell me if you

find my mobile there!).

• Less Mobile = More Mobility

Give up that inconvenient, insolent

interruption called a mobile! It’s

really scary how many times I’ve

wanted to check my phone this

weekend. And I’ve only got a ring/

text simple model – can only imag-

ine the addictiveness of a ‘smart’

phone.

It is here that I will provide the

counter-examples of the ‘Less is

More’ quotation:

More is More.

I was so chuffed to see my dad

having a go at getting fit. And this

is where the idea of More is More

comes in. A fitness-freak friend of

mine introduced me to the idea:

More exercise = More Energy.

It’s interesting to note that those

who fail to consistently exercise

always complain they don’t have

energy to run/bike/swim or even

walk. Yet those who’ve made it a

habit, are fit and healthy and have

more energy, to do more. A positive

feedback loop!

More is Less.

Easter is often a time for families

to get together. Our family used to

go camping when we were kids.

These days my two grown brothers

huddle around the smoky-warmth

of Melbourne and my sister is

on her own adventure, living and

working in Spain. B@?!#CH

Thus, it is I, the only country/farm-

ing child, who is left to help with

the farm house spring clean.

.

I spent a day rearranging camping

gear, golf bags, my sister’s junk, Dad’s

record collection (he hasn’t used in

20 years!!)... and I’m thinking – Gawd

these guys have a lot of sh?@#t. I

went about making a pile of stuff they

should throw out. And with other stuff,

I chucked without checking! That’s

the trouble with junk - the more you

have, the more time you have to spend

cleaning it, storing it and shuffling

around. There are many people try-

ing to use material objects to define

themselves. I’ve found that the people

who do this have less substance, less

depth.

More Stuff = Less Substance.

So is this article really about Less is

More? More or less: no.

It’s about ‘simplifying’ your life. That’s

not about making everything simple

(I tried making my life simple, without

modern needs - but ended up bald (no

hairdresser) and no job. Opps!)

Simplicity is about keeping what you

need in your life – exercise, friends,

challenge and it’s about eradicating

what you don’t need (even if you think

you need it) like useless technology

or junk. Getting rid of what brings you

down. This may include people who

make you feel like sh?#@t. You don’t

have to be polite and be friends with

everyone! You can slowly, kindly and

steadily cull negative ‘friends’ and

open yourself up to meeting new, con-

fident and supportive people.

So friends (be you good, bad or down-

right strange), I leave you there.

Enough ranting from me.

I’m off for another day of glorious Eas-

ter-break.

Simply,

-Grasshopper Gem.

“ “To date I have found many applications

of the idea ‘Less is More’ and may

counterexamples too. ”

Green Bike Farm Update

GREEN BIKE FARM

Green Bike Farm is a community garden that it is located behind New Res. Our focus this year is to grow food, fix bikes and encourage creative crafting. For more info go to: [email protected] OR FB Group: green bike farm

What’s New!?!

The pizza oven is finished! Many volunteers have helped build it since we started in August, 2012

Workshop participants from RCC as well as volunteers from the CSU student and staff body. In fact we even had US volunteers from separate organisation help build the foundation.

I’d like to yell out a huge THANK YOU to all those you assisted. To, Ed Maher from CSU Green, for helping with advertising and financing. Especially big “THANKS CHAMP!” to Jim Reese from Demo Gardens on Shaw St for organising and running the workshops.

The pizza oven looks amazing and we look forward to firing it up in the next few weeks. Winter pizza’s ahoy!

Rent-a-Plots Begin

We have allocated four plots to students. All are on campus students and not necessarily from new Res. They are clearly enthusiastic about growing their own food and have already whipped up these amazing goodies from the beginnings of the autumn harvest.

Proddies Film GBF Promotional Documentary Second year production students decided to use GBF for and assessment. I had the great fortune of watching this crew go about filming the gardens and being interviewed by them. The film is currently being edited but we will put it up on FB page and website as soon as we can.

Coming Up:

Craft Bike – keep an eye out on campus for the GBF craft bike. If you looking for a break between lectures use the bike to make something – a bracelet, trinket for friend, etc. Materials are supplied for free. And there is a donation can for anyone wanting to support these ideas and the GBF gardens. Bike Repair Workshop – coming soon! We have sourced bikes from the tip shop for $5 a pop. We are giving them away to students who want to fix them. Two of five have already been allocated. Join the facebook event – Bike Repair Workshops – to learn more about what’s involved and when/where it will be held. The plan is to hold the first one after the Easter Break.
