ABOUT US

Hyder Consulting is a multinational design and engineering consultancy renowned for designing and engineering some of the world’s most iconic buildings and structures. These include Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Cairo Wastewater Scheme and London’s Tower Bridge amongst many others. In recent years we have designed Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, Australia’s Go Between Bridge, Qatar’s Capital Market Tower, Frankfurt Airport’s new runway, Taiwan’s high speed rail network, and currently we are undertaking the design upgrade of London Bridge Station.

Our work is characterised by the highest standards of engineering and design, a reputation for innovation and results that stand the test of time.

We have a long and enviable pedigree, tracing our roots back for over two centuries in Europe, 100 years in East Asia, 70 years in Australia and 110 years in the Middle East. At the heart of our business are our consultants and support staff, based in one of our five regions or three design excellence centres. They apply our global expertise, coupled with local knowledge, to create award-winning solutions for the Property, Transport and Infrastructure, Utilities, Environment, Energy, Space, and Resources and Mining sectors.

Our vision is to be the next evolution in design engineering and consultancy, built on the strongest foundations that combine our rich heritage with the innovation and expertise of our people.

In 2007 Hyder was named the International Firm of the Year by the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE) and the New Civil Engineer magazine.

In 2009 Hyder won the international “Innovation Award” bestowed by the British Expertise for our work on the world’s tallest man-made structure - the Burj Khalifa.

More recently, and befitting of the 230th year of the consultancy’s operations, the International Federation

of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) recognised Hyder as a leading multinational design and engineering consultancy at its centenary celebrations, winning two prestigious awards for ‘Major building project of the last 100 years (Burj Khalifa)’ and ‘Major civil engineering project of the last 100 years (Sydney Harbour Bridge)’. The centenary awards recognise and celebrate the best consulting engineering achievements of the last 100 years (1923-2013).

The birth of a professionEstablished since 1785, Hyder celebrates its birth and continuous operation as an engineering consultancy. The company has operated under various renowned names and left its legacy on the landscape of six continents. Tracing our history since the 1700s, Hyder’s own eminent engineers collaborated with such noted engineers as Isambard Kingdom Brunel and Robert Stephenson, providing one of the world’s richest and most varied engineering legacies.

A look back over Hyder’s history leads us to the very roots of the consulting engineering profession.

Thomas Simpson, whose pioneering work in public health engineering in the 1780s and beyond, and from whose company Hyder can trace its direct heritage, was one of the first consulting engineers in Great Britain and indeed in the world. By 1785, whilst Inspector to the Chelsea Water Company, he was also advising several other Waterworks Companies and held positions as an engineer (a term first used around that time) as well as a director; positions he held concurrently with his Chelsea appointment.

During the 19th and 20th centuries, Freeman Fox and Partners and John Taylor & Sons built international reputations in their respective disciplines of bridges and

highways, and water and wastewater. Collectively, they were responsible for the design of several critical infrastructure projects across the world such as the Victoria Falls Bridge, Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Humber Bridge, the Severn Bridge, the Shanghai water supply project, and major water and sewerage projects in Leningrad (now St Petersburg) and Tehran.

The two firms merged in 1988 to form Acer Consultants. Over the next few years, the expertise of many other specialist firms was incorporated to form a major multinational infrastructure consultancy.

Acer Consultants was subsequently acquired by Welsh Water in 1993 and renamed Hyder Consulting in 1996. Over the following years, Hyder Consulting spearheaded Hyder plc’s move into providing total infrastructure solutions including advice, finance, design and operation.

When Hyder plc was bought by Western Power Distribution, the senior management of Hyder Consulting took the opportunity to acquire the business in a management buy-out, which was completed in January 2001. The company listed on the London Stock Exchange in October 2002.

The reputation for delivering ‘landmark’ projects, developed from the company’s early origins and has continued throughout the years. To read more about our history visit the publications section of our website to download ‘Footprints on a Global Landscape’, a book we published to celebrate our 230th anniversary in 2014.

Hyder has been delivering innovation and excellence for over two centuries.

A strategic overviewOur strategy is to offer core services to key clients operating in geographies where market dynamics, our long established track record, and our professional expertise differentiate us from our competitors.

We are differentiated through combining our approach to key account management with our ability to provide technical excellence from design teams located local to and remote from the client.

We operate two long established design excellence centres in the Philippines and India to support our client facing operations in our five regions - undertaking the design of highways, property, utility and transport projects. These design excellence centres provide the group with invaluable access to a pool of qualified engineering resources. Staff in these centres are managed locally, but are aligned to our client facing regions in order to provide a strong interface with the regional project teams.

Our strategy is underpinned by our determination to achieve a common culture and shared values with our people, clients and the communities in which we operate.

Our client-centred approachWe view our clients as valued partners and seek to build trust and develop close relationships with them. We strive to differentiate our services in three ways:

• tailoring our services using innovation to meet the specialist needs of our key clients – striving for excellence as defined by them and not by us

• developing unique skills, design tools and capabilities to enhance the commercial advantage of our key clients

• striving to provide new ideas and innovative solutions to problems faced by our clients

Our business approachOur business is managed regionally through locally based and empowered management teams who not only understand their local culture and markets, but also have insights into client pressures and opportunities.

Our regions

Australia

Hyder’s Australian team has been operating in the region for over 70 years and during that time has delivered some of the country’s most iconic landmarks, including the world-famous Sydney Harbour Bridge and Federation Square in Victoria. We are also responsible for some of the biggest infrastructure projects in Australia, such as Brisbane’s Airport Link, the Royal North Shore Hospital and the Port Botany Expansion Project.

We have offices across the country in Brisbane, Darwin, Dunsborough, Gold Coast, Karratha, Melbourne, Perth, Rockhampton and Sydney providing planning, engineering and design, project management and environmental services to a wide range of clients across these regions, as well as around the world. Our business is structured around a number of key market sectors, and this is based on our clients’ requirements for expertise in areas including airports, buildings and structures, land development, ports and maritime, power and energy, railways, resources and mining, roads, highways and bridges, and water and the environment.

Hyder Consulting Australia is passionate about delivering excellence and recognises that excellence is defined by our clients. So, whether we are designing an iconic building, creating a bridge or motorway or looking for innovative ways to conserve the environment, we consider our client’s requirements carefully in every decision we make.

East Asia

Hyder’s presence in East Asia dates back to 1967, when our predecessor firm, Freeman Fox & Partners, led the Mass Transport Study and Long Term Comprehensive Transport Study in Hong Kong, laying the foundations for today’s leading multi-disciplinary engineering consulting enterprise.

Our office in Hong Kong operates as the principal base to manage the highly creative and efficient business teams located in Hong Kong and China. With a Certificate of Approval to operate as a Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise (WFOE) in mainland China, we have offices in Shanghai and Beijing which provide a wide range of design and engineering services and advice to property developers and city governments

ACLA, a Hyder acquisition and one of Asia’s leading master planning and landscape architecture consultancies, has over 35 years of experience throughout the region. Together, ACLA and Hyder deliver an increasingly integrated suite of design engineering, environmental and support services to a wide range of clients in China, Asia, the Middle East and beyond.

Hyder Consulting East Asia currently employs about 400 staff. We have developed a strong track record in this region by deploying consultants with the collaborative working skills needed to deliver positive outcomes to our clients.

Germany

Hyder Consulting Germany is proud to be one of the few genuine design and engineering consultancies located in a German-speaking region. We currently employ over 300 highly skilled and motivated staff, who combine global know-how with local networks to develop the optimal solution for each individual project.

We offer property and infrastructure services for roads, rail, utilities, airports and structural engineering in ten locations across Germany and are proud to have contributed to Germany’s largest airport in Frankfurt as well as the most important motorway in addition to numerous prominent public projects.

We offer contemporary and innovative solutions to our clients, combining German precision and perfectionism with world-renowned creativity and inspiration. Our exceptional flexibility means that we are able to factor in the unpredictable and our commitment and reliability throughout all phases of a project is guaranteed.

Middle East

Hyder Consulting has been delivering projects in the Middle East for over a century. We began in 1904 as John Taylor & Sons, providing advice on Aden’s water supplies, and our expertise has been in demand ever since. In fact, in October 2014 we celebrated our 110th year of continuous operation in the Middle East.

We currently have offices in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Doha, Bahrain, Dubai and Jeddah, with more 1,200 consultants and support staff. Our multinational business model also enables us to draw upon the company’s global resources from other regions or two design excellence centres.

Hyder has developed many of the region’s iconic projects, each providing evidence of our engineering excellence and success. They include the world’s tallest building, Burj Khalifa, Dubai; the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha; North Manama Causeway, Bahrain; and Emirates Towers, Dubai. Every day we combine local knowledge and global expertise to successfully deliver projects for our clients and their stakeholders in this rapidly developing region.

United Kingdom

In the UK we are proud of the broad range of skills and expertise we bring to the Hyder proposition and to our clients – from our core offerings in rail, highways, water, property and environment to the new and developing areas of our business including: nuclear and renewable energy; process safety and risk management in the nuclear, oil and gas sectors; metallurgy and forensic engineering; and space mechanism design and manufacture.

Our aim is simple: to be the trusted partners of our valued clients, creating exceptional solutions. It is an approach that underpins our strategy and is core to everything we do.

In 2014 we were among the first engineering consultancies to achieve BS11000 certification for Collaborative Business Relationships. It is an accolade that clearly illustrates the way we work. By partnering in this way with our key stakeholders we deliver added value, practical advice, technical innovation and commitment to excellence – in short, the very best solutions for our clients.

OUR MARKETS

Our extensive regional and local expertise is currently managed through four sectors: property, transport, utilities and environment. In addition, we are investing both organically and through acquisition in building skills and capabilities in two new emerging sectors: energy and resources.

Our market sectors are underpinned by four strong global growth drivers:

• urbanisation, including rural populations in Asia

• mass transit, with increased investment in rail/metro schemes

• climate change, driving low carbon design

• water and power scarcity

We strive to utilise our understanding and expertise of these sectors to create innovative solutions for the social and commercial benefit of our clients in line with their priorities. Our approach also encompasses the highest quality standards and a continuous drive for technical excellence.
