YOUR SMILE
FOR TODAY
What is Tenebrae? The name Tenebrae is the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows.” During this service, we will experience a
small portion of Christ’s pain and suffering the day of His crucifixion. One of the most conspicuous features of the service is the gradual extinguishing of candles until only a single candle, considered a symbol of our Lord, remains.
As it gets darker and darker we reflect on the great emotional and physical pain that was very real for Jesus that evening. Toward the end of the service, the Christ candle is hidden, typifying the apparent victory of the
forces of evil over good. At the very end, a loud noise is heard, symbolizing the earthquake at the time of His
death (Matthew 27) and His resurrection (Matthew 28:2). At the moment of the earthquake, the temple veil was torn apart, making the Holy of Holies exposed to public view. This is understood to represent God’s change toward us
with direct access to him, no longer requiring the ceremonial acts of the priests for our forgiveness of sin.
The hidden candle is then restored to its place, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. By this single
light we all depart in silence.

WORLD WIDE MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER
SPOTLIGHT: MEXICO
Call to Family, Community
and Participation
Humans are social by nature. Like the early
disciples, we are called to come together and
grow as a community - whether that community
is in our classroom, workplace, or family.
ENCOUNTER MARIA
Maria de la Luz Lugo Martínez remembers what
it was like growing up in Ejido Hidalgo, Mexico.
“We said we were rich because we had a lot of
corn, beans and animals.” But now, with few
jobs and even less rain, young people—
including Maria’s children—are leaving the
community in search of a better life.
To help families like Maria’s, CRS launched a
greenhouse project empowering women with
meaningful work and community. Women visit
their community greenhouses to grow cactuses
to sell—but they also go for so much more. “At
the greenhouses, we laugh, we talk, we spend
time together. Sometimes we leave our homes
angry or sad. But then we start working with
the plants, and we forget. Talking, laughing—we
forget our problems for a while,” says Maria.
As the cactuses grow, so to do the economic
opportunities. “We didn’t believe we were going
to get that far. It’s a lot of joy, a lot of
excitement to see so many plants flowering.”
The flourishing cactuses aren’t the only things
that give Maria pride. Even though they live far
away, she still remains close to her family. “I
give thanks to God that He gave me all my
children and grandchildren,” she says. “They
give me strength and courage to work hard. My
children call and say, ‘Don’t give up, Mom. Have
faith in God.’”
With help from the Rice Bowls, the CRS Mexico
program also addresses several issues of
importance: migration, peace building and
human rights, and inequitable access to rural
development opportunities in a country where
half the population lives in poverty.
ARK Program
Act of Random Kindness
The Faculty, Staff, and Children of Assumption
School have been taking part in the ARK Program
- Act of Random Kindness during the 40 days of
Lent. Everyday, the children have been writing
down one act of kindness that they have done
for someone else. Acts of kindness are a
wonderful opportunity for them to
demonstrate love in action.
"Untie him and let him go." Husbands and wives, untie each other
from the fetters of misunderstanding by attending a Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend.
The next WWME Weekends are Apr 22-23, 2017 in Brewster, MA and
Jun 10-11, 2017 in Medway, MA. For more information, call Stephen & Michelle O'Leary at
800-710-9963 or visit us at www.WWMEMA.org.
