Saint Paul of the Cross Parish

THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 15, 2020

Saint Paul of the Cross Parish Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania March 15, 2020

“I Thirst” As Lent steadily progresses, the Church gives us the story of the woman at the well for our consideration (JN 4:5-42). It is a beautiful tale of a sinner’s personal encounter with the merciful Jesus. The story of the Samaritan woman’s conversion is that of an individual who searched for meaning and fulfillment in all the wrong places. She longed for love, but didn’t quite know how to find it. Her presence at the well and her desire to quench her thirst is symbolic of a deeper spiritual thirst that she is enduring. The Lord is also at the well seeking to quench his thirst. He is thirsty for the woman’s conversion. In this Gospel passage, it is Jesus who searches out the woman and helps her to realize that she needs him, that he is the “living water” who will satisfy every longing of this woman’s heart and soul.

For us this profound story of conversion takes place today in the Sacrament of Penance. The confessional is the font where we can find living waters - where Jesus makes his merciful presence known to us. It is in Confession where the Lord manifests his deep thirst for our conversion, our faith and our communion with him. And it is the opportunity for us to express authentic sorrow for the times that we have sought to quench our spiritual thirsts in disordered, destructive and sinful ways.

As we progress through this Lenten season, may we not forget the sacred and refreshing encounter with Christ that awaits us in the Sacrament of Holy Penance. For your convenience, the Lenten Confessions are listed to the right.

RCIA Candidates to the Cathedral At today’s 10:00am Mass the three RCIA candidates of Saint Paul of the Cross Parish will participate in the Rite of Sending. During this traditional rite they will be recognized for the progress they’ve made in their spiritual formation over these past several months. At the same time we will ask God to bless and strengthen them in the days ahead, as they enter into the final phase of preparation for full reception into the Roman Catholic Church.

Following the Rite of Sending, our candidates will depart for Saint Paul Cathedral for the Rite of Election where they will be greeted by Bishop Zubik who will confirm that Christ has indeed chosen them to become members of His Mystical Body, the Church.

Our RCIA candidates are Mia Eisenberg, Bill Doston, and Paul Zigerelli. Please keep them in your daily prayers throughout this Lenten season as they prepare to receive the sacraments for the first time at the Easter Vigil Mass.

Organ Renovation Phase I – COMLETED! I am happy to report that Phase 1 of the renovation of the historic organ in Saint Anne Church was completed last week. Thank you to everyone who has been generously donating to the cause and supporting the various fundraisers. Thanks also to the Organ Renovation Committee for their excellent work and dedication!

In Phase 1 the Luley Organ Company undertook the responsibility for designing, building and installing a brand new organ console and ensuring that the organ is playable for weekend Masses, Funerals and Weddings until the project reaches its completion. The new console features solid-state technology that will allow the organist greater control while playing. Another great feature is that the new console is portable, which means the organ console can be moved into the sanctuary for concerts such as our annual Christmas Choir Concert.

Unfortunately, the new console will not fix any of the “dead” or “sticky” notes that you may have heard plaguing the organ in recent months, but is a necessary first step that lays the foundation to addressing these issues in Phase 2. In the interim, the new console will allow an organist to change the various registrations at a quicker and more efficient rate than the old console, which had been deteriorating rapidly over the past month or so.

O Good Saint Anne

Did You Know…

Did you know that the original name of the ladybug is “Our Lady’s Bug?” It seems that during the Middle Ages, a plague of small insects (probably aphids) attacked the crops, threatening Europe with starvation. The people had recourse to Our Lady, and petitioned her to save them from this plague. In answer to their prayer, a cloud of small, black-spotted, orange-red insects arrived and promptly ate all the offending pests. The grateful population gave to them the name, “Our Lady’s Bugs.” The 1st graders at Saint Anne School recently created some art with “ladybugs”. Scan the QR Code to see the video!

The Journey of Grief There is a beautiful saying: "Grief never ends . . . but it changes. It is a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness nor a lack of faith . . . it is the price of love." Our Spring bereavement series begins on Monday, April 6 at 7 pm in the DePalma room and continues through Monday, May 18. We meet to support one another in the journey of grief; to share our hearts, our faith, our love and our sorrow. Whether you have had a recent loss or a loss that occurred years ago, you are welcome to join us in this confidential, sacred space. Please contact Kathy at 412-344-9690 if you have questions or to register. This program is free to all participants. Join us Tuesday, March 17th at 5:45 pm at the Convent Dining Room, to make 150 bag lunches to be delivered to the Red Door. Your help is essential and appreciated for our ministry.
