Team Training Before you begin your formal assignments you need to determine: Team Identification

• Individual spy names • A team spy name • A code word that ensures secrecy between you and your primary

contact Team Cohesiveness – Interview each member of the team

Favorites: foods, TV shows, movies, sports, bands, songs, etc. Background: childhood memory, family info, pets, travel Goals and Wishes: What are you working toward, what do you dream

about happening? Pet peeves regarding group work

Team Effectiveness - Guest Teams share what it means to collaborate

• Develop questions for the guest team(s) • Discuss answers with your team

Team Roles Now that you are ready to work in the team, here are the team roles that you will serve on a rotating basis. Each of you must complete each role at least once.

• Team Synthesizer – leads the group in classifying, sorting, and summarizing the individual findings of the assigned topic.

• Team Recorder – writes out all the critical clues for the team. Each person should choose a color of pen to write in when they are the recorder.

• Team Timekeeper and Encourager – keeps the group focused, upbeat, and ON TIME.

• Team Web Manager – posts all information on the primary site. Team Bonding

Have fun together – play the “Shell Game” with a walnut shell and three cups. Who can guess where the shell is? Each member gets five tries. Team member with the best ratio represents the team. Play continues until there is the most intuitive member of the agency.

Character Purpose: Agent Assignment In the genre of spy thrillers, the plot is anchored by a variety of characters; the purpose of these characters is directly tied to the conflict and plot. Match the following characters with their purpose(s) and cite the text (use quotations marks and ellipses whenever needed) to provide proof. Characters

o Malak o Tyrone Boone o Q o Angela o President Culpepper o John Masters o Peter “Speed” Paulsen

Purposes

provide stability share background

information contribute technical

mastery create mystery deliver suspense stall the plot provide “comic relief” divert the readers’

attention advances the storyline

Example: On page 76, in I,Q3, X-Ray shows he is the team’s technology master. He states, “…’I’m the one that asked Boone to get the drone…We should have spent our time putting tracking devices on those vehicles, but no, I wanted to try a drone out. Stupid!’” He was trying to use updated equipment but he made a mistake in the choice of technology he made. He is clearly the man in charge of technology for the team. Note: I used an ellipsis because I did not need the entire conversation and single quote marks along with quotation marks because I was quoting dialogue.

Mission Two Diction and Syntax Analysis: Team Assignment WARNING: Do not assume you know the depth or complexity of the diction or syntax your first try; this is a rigorous assignment! It calls for sincere effort and highly skilled execution! Each member of the team will be assigned a different section of the novel by the agency. You will show how the analysis of diction and syntax helps the reader understand and appreciate the novel. Diction - choice of words by an author with regard to correctness, clearness, and/or effectiveness. Choice includes word origin, part of speech, denotation/connotation, spatial association, parallel words, and metaphoric use. Syntax – use and arrangement of phrases and sentences by the author. Sentence complexity, use of figurative language: similes, images, metaphors, etc., and symbols, sentence rhythm. Obtain your specific assignment selection from the agency (your teacher). Step One: Read through the section without taking any notes. Step Two: Word-process your selection using 3.0 spacing. You will use this for Steps Three - Ten. Step Three: Read through the section and record any questions you have or information you gain as you read the text, no matter what it is. Step Four: Mark the words that direct you to the point of view: first, second, third person. Annotate which point of view it is.

I, Q Book Three: Kitty Hawk Student Dossier 2012

jdsprague

Diction and Syntax Analysis: Team Assignment cont. Step Five: Mark any simplistic words that are used in a highly effective way and/or mark any sophisticated words that create interesting sounds for the reader. Look up the etymology of the word – look for changes. Look for all the meanings of the words, even if you know how it is being used. Step Six: Mark all forms of figurative language – develop your own key code of terms: M – metaphor; A – alliteration, etc. Annotate what each represents. Step Seven: Mark any words in the section that are distinguished by their parts of speech. Example: Are there pronouns, adjectives, prepositional phrases, that clarify the section? How do the verbs work to clarify past, present, or future tense? Is the author using active or passive voice? Step Eight: Mark the word(s) and/or phrase(s) that create mood; identify the mood(s). Watch for sarcasm. Punctuation can contribute to this as well. Step Nine: Consider how each word or group of words suggests a pattern and/or points to a time period, specific place, theme (loyalty, death, courage).

Mission Four Theme Analysis: Agent Task Though the enjoyment of the novel is an important part of every author’s motivation to write, there is usually more to the motivation. Morals are principles or rules of right conduct – they help distinguish right from wrong.

Step One: Select two morals from the list that connect to I,Q 3: Kitty Hawk.

Morals A man is known by the company he keeps. A villain may disguise himself, but he will not deceive the wise. A humble life with peace and quiet is better than a splendid one with danger and risk.

Even the wise must recognize their limits. Faithful service should long be remembered. It is better to bend than to break. Lessons are not given, they are taken. No one can be a friend if you know not whether to trust or distrust him.

Persuasion is better than force. Slow but steady wins the race. The best intentions will not always ensure success. The more honor the more danger.

I, Q Book Three: Kitty Hawk Student Dossier 2012

jdsprague

Theme Analysis: Agent Task cont. Step Two: Cite evidence that connects the moral to the story in an essay format. Refer often to this checklist and the example.

Theme Analysis Checklist

ORGANIZATION thesis statement (introduction) that includes the moral and the title of the book, author, and possible chapter title.

transition words that create fluent paragraphs (NO headings).

final statement that includes a wrap-up of the reasons the moral and story connect.

CONTENT – (50 points) a retelling of the moral so that the reader is reminded of its meaning .

retelling and direct citing (uses quotation marks) of several story parts that connect to the moral.

Theme Analysis Example Moral: Even the wise must recognize their limits. In the novel, IQ3 by Roland Smith, two members of the SOS team make mistakes that put others in danger. The moral ‘even the wise must recognize their limits’ means that mistakes can be made by anyone and that we should all be careful with every decision we make. On page 76 the author shows how X-Ray, a mechanical genius, thinks he is too smart for the criminals, “…he needed to get the mistakes of the past few hours (the fancy drone vs. simple trackers) out of his system before he could focus his formidable intellect on the problem at hand.” Also, Boone, one of the cleverest characters, leaves Angela and Q alone. Soon after he leaves the two alone they are taken by the criminals; his error puts their life in jeopardy. Everyone needs to remember they can make mistakes, even the most wise people like Boone and X-Ray need to recognize their limits.

Mission Six

BMB (Body, Mind, Brief): Agent Assignment

Your superiors at the agency need the most up-to-date nutrition, fitness, and character information in order to keep operatives in “peak” condition. Write a “brief” for your superiors. The term “brief” actually refers to a concise but thorough summarization of research and data. It does not mean short. Include:

a. Thesis: your overall recommendation and where you uncovered the information

b. Visual of the three-day diet, five-day fitness program

c. Why this regimen will keep the operative in top physical condition

d. Why this regimen will keep the operative in top mental condition.

e. Why this regimen will keep the operative in top emotional condition.

f. Why the information can be trusted, and your final recommendation.

The following learning experiences will facilitate the writing of the BMB.

I, Q Book Three: Kitty Hawk Student Dossier 2012

jdsprague

Field Operative Training - Nutrition: Agent Assignment

Operatives are expected to eat nutritious foods, “super foods.” What meals and snacks should a spy eat, and how often? What type of diet does an operative in the field need to maintain physical strength and agility, mental acuity, and endurance? Step One: List ten “superfoods” in various food groups AND their benefits. Superfood Benefits Step Two: Record Sources & Determine Accuracy and Bias at the end of the dossier.

I, Q Book Three: Kitty Hawk Student Dossier 2012

jdsprague

Field Operative Training – Fitness: Team Assignment Determine a 5-day exercise regimen for field agents. What combination of fitness exercises - yoga, isometrics, strength training, weight training, and aerobic - will you recommend and why? Each member:

1. gathers data 2. records sources (source log) 3. examines bias (bias watch w/s) 4. compares sources and bias with team 5. determines the best course of action – per day 6. writes out a recommendation and benefits

Meet with your team:

1. compare and contrast recommendations and benefits 2. combine the information for the final 5-week formal exercise

regimen and list the benefits of each on the next sheet 3. sequence the time line for the regimen 4. write a juicy paragraph (8-12 sentences) sharing the

recommendation and benefits (this paragraph will eventually be used in the BMB)

Extension: Implement your own nutrition and fitness training for the unit’s duration and journal your experiences.

I, Q Book Three: Kitty Hawk Student Dossier 2012

jdsprague

Field Operative Training – Character: Team Assignment The character of any operative must embody the highest standards. The pillars of character help the agency meet these standards. 1. All members discuss the pillar of character: Citizenship. Answer the following questions:

What is citizenship? What affects citizenship? How can we become valuable citizens who contribute to society?

2. Assign each member one of the following pillars of character: Responsibility, Caring, Kindness, Respect, Trustworthiness. Write out in an essay format the answers to the following questions, placing the assigned character traits in the ellipsis (…)

What is…? What affects…? How can I create and/or contribute to…?

3. Each member must create a concrete strategy for other members to remember the pillar of character. Some or all of these strategies will be used in the BMB.

Example: Caring Card – write these adjectives and any others you canthink of. Let this be a card you carry with you at all times so you

never forget to “CARE”!

I, Q Book Three: Kitty Hawk Student Dossier 2012

jdsprague

CARING Kind, considerate, understanding, thoughtful, gracious,

generous, big hearted, merciful, patient, helpful, giving, magnanimous,

sympathetic, warm, mindful, courteous.

Perform the three Rs as you write the BMB draft. Review the guidelines. Reflect back to them often. Revise your work by answering the questions on the Self-revision guide sheet.

Remember that you may include the paragraph the team wrote about the exercise regimen and the specific ideas for maintaining the highest character for every operative. Once the draft is completed, give the BMB to a team member for revision and a copy of the Peer-revision guide sheet. During the 3-day time span that your draft is with a team member, create the Visual representing the 3-day meal plan and the 5-day exercise regimen. Discuss your teammates’ recommendations for revisions. Revise any areas that need further clarification or additions and edit where necessary. Meet with your direct supervisor (parent or another adult), sharing your BMB. Discuss any final revisions or edits needed for optimum understanding; revise and edit as needed. Submit all copies of the BMB to your superiors in the agency. (teachers).
