THURSTON, Lloyd, 1880-1970

THURSTON, Lloyd, a Representative from Iowa; born in Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa, March 27, 1880; attended the public schools; during the Spanish-American War enlisted on June 13, 1898, as a private in Company I, Fifty-first Regiment, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and served with this company during the Philippine Insurrection, and was honorably discharged on November 2, 1899; was graduated from the law department of the University of Iowa at Iowa City in 1902; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice in Osceola, Clarke County, Iowa; captain in the National Guard of Iowa 1902-1906; prosecuting attorney of Clarke County 1906-1910; during the First World War served with the rank of captain in Company C, Twenty-sixth Battalion, United States Guards, at Fort Crook, Nebr.; member of the State senate 1920-1924; elected as a Republican to the Sixty-ninth and to the six succeeding Congresses (March 4, 1925-January 3, 1939); was not a candidate for renomination in 1938, but was an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination for United States Senator; resumed the practice of law in Osceola, Iowa; died in Des Moines, Iowa, May 7, 1970; interment in Maple Hill Cemetery, Osceola, Iowa.

Iowa Departmcn n commauder of the United Spanish War Veterans. In his legislative capaci ties. H on. Lloyd Thur~ton has been t he author of several statutes benefitJOg u-eterans.

While Iowa 5-'l.atc Senator, Mr. Thurs ton was coauthor and spomsor of a bill creating the Department of Agricult:ure of hils st ate. a work of great and permanent value- in a commonw ealth which leads in agricultural prodJuction. Although he last r epresented the Iowa Fift h District irt the Congress of the Un ited Stat!!S in 1939. h e has r emained in the public eye through his ma"'y welfare-centered activities. He has spoken many tim1es on the radio on cultural subj ects , international aff:'airs, and matters of importance to veterans and th10sc interested in sound government . For many years he was a trustee of the American Child Home Firnding AsS<>ciation, and belonged to the Jefferson Natiomal ExJ>ansion Commission. H e r etains membershiip in the Pioneer Lawmakers of Iowa, and is a charter. membe1r of the Clar ke County Farm Bureau and hi> American L egion post. Mr. Thurston serves on htis library board, as its president, and he is past presiident of th e local unit of the R otary In ternational.

S ince resumimg private life and private legal practice in 1939. E:! on. Lloyd Th urs ton has mainta ined an office in O scteola. He is entitled to practice before the Iowa Supr\t'm e Court, the federal courts, and the United States S upreme Court. Mr. Thurston is a Republican in his- politics.

In t910, Ll(i)yd Thurston m arried Louella Bolibaugh, dau;:{hte.:r of Dr. VV. R . and Lavada Bolibaugh. Mrs. T hurstom was horn in Clarke County, and received her edu.<tation in the public schools of O sceola and at I owa State Teachers College. She is a member of the NatiJOnal Federation o f \\/omen's Clubs, and serves on seve~ral o f its s tate committees. She is also a member of t.n1e D aughters of the American Revolution, the P. 1E. 0. Society, the \Vomcn's Congressional Club ofi \\'ashington, D . C.. and of the auxiliaries of the Spa nish- American \Var Veterans and the American. Legion. She i s a life member and cu~ator of the· State H istorical Society of I owa, and. bemg vitally iintcrested in political affairs and good government. iis a member of the Fourth District State Centrall Republican Committee. which she ~rves as co-ct:hairman. den, Germany, was one of the eight son:> of ] ohn Gottiel> Wirsig, who lef t Germany in 1856 in order that his sons might avoid service in the German Army. The fami ly had hardly established itself in Iowa when the Civil War broke out, and to balance things one of the sons, Adolph. ran away from home and joiued the Union Army. John Gotlieb \Virsig bought land in L ee County and s pent the remainder of his life as a farmer. His son Paul, father of the doctor, having chosen farm ing as his career, also purchased land in Lee County and resided on the same farm unti l his d eath in 1932, at the age of seventy-seven. His widow, Elleu (Vornkahl) Wirsig, died on D ecember 24, 1949, in which year she had celebrated her ninety-first birthday. Both Mr. and Mrs. P aul \Virsig were active ior years in the German Evangelical Church in Lee County. Mr. vVirsig was a leader in the Republican party o rganization and he held se,:eral township offices. Besides the doctor, there were four children: Ellenora, the wife of Fredcr ick Fett, a Lee County farmer ; Arthur E. vVirsig, a dentist at Farmington; Marvin A., a farmer in Lee County; and Cordelia, who resides on the old homestead in Lee County, where she lived with her mother during recent years.

Dr. Arnold 0. Wirsig, the t hird born among the five children, first attended the rural schools in L ee County, afte r which h e was a student at the Farmington Hig h School. Upon his g raduat ion from t he high school, he entered D rake University, in Des Moines, where, in 1912, he r eceived the degree of Doctor of Medicine. Inasmuch as the Drake University Medical School became, in 1913. a part of the State University of Iowa College of Medicine, Dr. Wirsig is now a recognized alumnus of the u niversity. For e ighteen months he interned at Iowa Methodist Hosp ital. In the World War I period, Dr. Wirsig volunteered for ser vice w ith the United States Army Medical Corps and was commissioned a first lieutenant. H e assisted Dr. Arthur Steindler in r econstruction work a mong the wounded veterans, and, in 1919, obtained his honorable discharge.

O n May 23, 1919, Dr. Wirsig established himself in practice in Shenandoah, where he has remained ever since, with offices at 227 Keshlear-Rankin Building. His reputation as a s urgeon has spread into the adjoining s tates of Nebraska and Missouri, and he is on the surgical staff of the Memorial H ospital in Shenandoah. I n 1943 h e was appointed a m ember of the State Board of Health by Governor George A. VJ ilson, serving in tha t capacity for two years, and he received numerous citations from the President of the United States an d the Governor of Iowa for his work as examining physician on the Board of Examiners in P age Coun ty during World vVar II.

Dr. \IVirs ig is a member of the Page County Medical Society, the Iowa State and American m edical associations , and the American Association of Railway Surgeons. F raternally, he is affiliated with the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons, holding the Thirty -second degree in the Ancient and Accepted Scottis h Rite and belonging to Za- Ga-Zig Temple of the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine at Des Moines, and with Shenandoah Lodge of the Benevolent and P rotective Order of Elks; and be is a member of Phi Delta Gamma, na tional medical fraternity, Chi Delta, social fraternity, t he American Legion. and the Omaha Athletic Club. He is surgeon for the Wabash Railway Company and an honor ary c itizen of Boys' Town. He is a Republican, and farming and cattle breeding are his hobbies.

Elected to represent Iowa's 5th and 8th Districts in the US House of Representatives, he served from 1925 to 1939.
