Cursing couples in the street? Wishing you had a date for the 14th?Jema Wyatt takes us through her way of celebrating Valentines Day

Anti-Valentines!With the cheese-fest holiday that is Valentine's Day fast approaching, it's timeto reconsider hiding under your covers watching soppy love films on your ownand feeling sorry for yourself. You should bemaking this day about you and yourfellow singletons!

From this day forward, Valentine’s Day ought to be named ‘SinglesAwarenessDay’ where all single individuals go out and have as much fun as they can andenjoy the freedom they have on this day. Just think, you are not tied down tohaving a night in with the boyfriend, or spending stupid amounts of money onmeaningless presents or going out for over-priced meals, you have theFREEDOM.

There is no escaping the tasteless flowers and chocolates combination or theintense cringe worthy PDA on this day, but you can just feel sorry for them andshow them what they are missing out on. Therefore I have put together somereasons why you girls and boys should celebrate ‘Single’s Awareness Day’.

• You don’t have to think aboutanyone but yourself, focus moreon March 14th

• You have no obligation to buysomething tacky just to showsomeone you love them.

• You can play video gamesand watch sports all day withoutanyone nagging saying ‘So youdon’t love me anymore?’

• You are saving money!

Guys' Benefits:• It’s an excuse to treat

yourself as who do you lovemore than yourself.

• Just think about the marked-down chocolates of February 15th

• You don’t have to wear theridiculously red and pink itemsfor your other half. No one looksthat good in those colours!

• No more stupid teddybears… we don’t have room!

If you think the whole day is more of a ‘Happy unimaginative, consumerist-orientated and shallow interpretation of romance day’ then look no further. Hereare a few ideas of what you can do to make this day more satisfying.Single Awareness Day Ideas:

1. Anti – V Day Drinking Games Rules

• Drink whenever someone mentions an ex.

• Drink whenever someone mentions Valentine’s Day or Love.

• Drink if you are wearing any pink or red.

• Drink if wish you were with a member of the opposite sex rightnow.

2. Make your own romantic meal, with a group of friends. Why only letthe couples have romantic meals, you can too, whether it’s a trip to thelocal takeaway or a group trip to the restaurant, make sure you don’tmiss out

3. Go out and enjoy being single, there are plenty of people who aresingle around Birmingham, so why not have a bit of fun and whoknows you never know who you might meet.

4. Watch movies, I don’t mean the loved up versions where girls aresmitten from the first scene, but films that are more along the lines of‘My Bloody Valentine’, ‘Blue Valentine’ and ‘Fatal Attraction’, ‘TheBreak-Up’ and ‘ 500 Days of Summer’.

So a bit of advice for all your single people out there, take off the rose-tintedglasses and realise you shouldn’t be jealous of couples, as yes they haveone day of being all loved-up but the reality is, they are not like this every dayand most miss aspects of being single. So rather than being resentful of thecouples around you, remind yourself of all the things you don’t miss aboutbeing in a relationship, and all the perks of being single you get to experiencenow.

Happy Singles Awareness Day!

thought I should make the effort with him on our first Valentine’s Day.We had only been going out a few months, so he had not experience mecooking yet, so I planned to cook a romantic dinner in for us.The evening was set; he was due to come to my house for 7 pm and enjoyan evening of lovely food and films. I really did go all out with the starters, main course, gorgeous dessert, and it was lovely, and we ended up havinga great evening.Unfortunately the next day we were both rather ill, and all we can think isthat I didn’t cook the food thoroughly enough. The positive aspect is since then, my boyfriend has always taken me outfor Valentine’s Day dinner, as he worries if I try again he may not surviveto next year and so there is a silver lining! - JemaWyatt

Valentines StoriesNot every Valentines day goes as smoothly as it does in themovies! These brave few writers bare their views on the mostloved-up day of the year, and how not to do Valentines Day...

Food Faux PasEvery year, I try to avoid the14th February like the plague, for some strange reason thisgirl was not born with a singleromantic bone in her body. However 4 years ago I metan amazing guy in which I

I do not particularly get along with Valentine’s Day, not because I am afrustrated single woman but because of the commercialisation of the‘lovers’ day’.

I believe couples should create their own day and should make it morepersonal, surprising. Then, it is not about rushing in shops to find the‘present of the year’ for your partner. From my point of view, if youwant to make your partner happy, show him/her your love every singleday by little attention, not necessarily in a material way.

Each couple is dissimilar, each love is unique. If you want to create aspecial day, create special memories, create your own present with yourhands. Nothing is most appreciated than to receive a personalisedpresent. But again, do not wait for this international commercial day todo it.

Moreover, if you do not receive anything this day, do not provoke anargument (girls, be patient). Instead, take it easy and change the wayyou see it: no expectation=no disillusion. If your boyfriend did not takeyou out for dinner in a great restaurant or did not give you roses, becool. Make sure you enjoy every second you will be together, wherever youare, whatever you do. Every day is ‘Valentine’s day’. - Noemie Noel

When I was a little girl I dreamt of the perfect Valentines Day. It started bywaking up to a knock at the door and finding the postman carrying a dozen redroses and a red envelope addressed to ‘My One and Only Love’.

With butterflies in my stomach I would open the envelope to find a card withhearts all over the front page saying ‘Will you be my Valentine?’ I would thenopen it to find a Valentine's day poem which goes a little like this ‘Many are thestars I see, but in my eye no star like thee’... you can imagine the rest. Therewould be a little slip of paper in the card with a set of instructions ending with‘Be ready at 6’.

When 6 o’clock there is another knock at the door and there he is, suited andbooted. As he leads to me to car he hands me a blindfold. We finally reach ourdestination, well I’m guessing seeing as he’s turned off the engine. He then assistsme out of the car, we stroll for a couple of minutes in the evening breeze until I’mseated. He slowly removes the blindfold and I find myself sitting at a candlelittable on the deck of a boat along the river surrounded by the twinkling lights ofthe city… what a perfect day that would be?

I once told this dream to someone many years back, and last year my dream wasmade into a reality. It was the perfect Valentines Day. - Jodene Adjei –Agyekum

My Perfect Valentine

Interview

15

Going Against the GrainEnya Quin-Jarvis meets oneof Birmingham's buddingentrepreneurs, Jamie DunnUnsure of what to expect I wasnervous, nervous at the fact thatIwasabout to interviewsomeonewho at the same age, hadachieved more than I probablywill in a lifetime.

Peering through the smear-lessglass windows of the exclusiveoffice spacing, providing for Birmingham’smost upmarket clientele. It was herethat I was to meet Birmingham’s most successful young entrepreneur, JamieDunn.

With a list of successful business ventures enough to impress any employer,my expectations of Mr Dunn casted an image of custom-made Italian suits, personal assistants and an office fit for a king. But how wrong could I havebeen? Tucked away in the corner, his office is as large as amaster suite wherethe personal assistant is nowhere to be seen and the bespoke Italian suit isreplacedwith a jumper and jeans. “You’re not going to take any photos are you,I’m inmy scruffs!” he laughs. His friendly and playful behaviour catchesme off-guard, leaving all nervousness at the door.

At 21, Mr Dunn has co-founded companies such as Made by Young People,a printing company with a six-figure turn-over, a youth entrepreneurial supportprogramme and The A Fund, helping the young people of Birmingham to starttheir own business. Mr Dunn not only has his businesses but he is also aninternational speaker, a newspaper columnist for the Birmingham Mail andrecently an acclaimed author.

Much of Dunn’s success lies in his ambition to succeed with his fearlessapproach to business and life, meaning that standing out and taking chances

Interview

16

is something Dunn is familiar with. As the youngestof four, childhood was not the easiest. Hisunemployed mother and council worker fatherstruggled to financially provide for him and hissiblings, “MumandDad couldn’t afford for me to goonschool trips or pay for school trainers or anythinglike that.” In a school blazer two sizes too big, standing out from his peers was something Dunnwas used to, a quality that earned him a place onthe Peter Jones Path Finder course. On the day ofhis assessment it was clear Dunn was different tohis wealthier competitors not only in age but inappearance, “We rocked up in an old rusty clappedout Ford Focus that my old man drove whilsteveryone else had nice cars” however, with adetermination to embrace who he is and utilise hisunderprivileged background it was Dunns fearless choice in outfit whichcaught the attention of Peter Jones. Wearing a pink shirt and grey cardiganDunn was praised by Peter Jones for taking the chance and being differentto the other candidates who flaunted expensive attire.

With a determination to make some money of his own, school text bookswere often replaced by hit records from the 90s in a bid to flog his parentsold CDs to his peers. However, school soon taught this modern day Dell Boythe cruel realities of stepping out of the norm. “I got in trouble from theschools who said I was not learning and I got into trouble from my parents.”

At 12 when most boys his age were interested in playing on their PlayStationDunn was more interested in selling them, “I just love that sales buzz ofselling stuff and exchanging money.” Getting up at the crack of dawn,Saturday mornings were spent working on local car boot sales and markets, which earned him around £500 a week, averaging to be the similar amountto his father’s salary. It was this fearless approach to being different, which iswhat has enabled him to be the man he is today, something he feels was,“instilled from an early age” and something that hasn’t stopped there.

The PLACE to go

Interview

17

As an international speaker Dunn gives talks to a diverse audience fromgovernmental ministers to business students, offering advice and guidance onentrepreneurial ideas. Flying all over the world, Dunn highlights that beingbooked directly by the president of Malaysia was the “most surreal experience”of them all. Having streets cornered off for his arrival and heightened securityaroundhishotelDunnsexplains, “Itwasquite scary - I didnot knowhow tohandleit, I mean why me? I am from Erdington man, I can handle myself.” Neveraccepting less than £800 for a half an hour talk shows that the days of standingin an oversized school blazer are well behind him.

It is his hardworking approach with an exhaustive list of current ventures whichmakes is clear why he was recently shortlisted as one of the Top 20 YoungPeople in The World by Junior Chamber International. On asking how he feltbeing nominated for an award previously won by the likes of Elvis Presley andJohn F Kennedy, this ‘regular kid from Erdington’ replied, “I just thought it wasa joke.”As 2011winner of the Youth for ExcellenceAward andweekly columnistfor the BirminghamMail, Dunn’s hectic lifestyle often leaves little opportunity forbreaks although he feels, “If you work hard, you should play hard becauseotherwise, what is the point if you don’t enjoy your success!”

With an upbringing that has helped shaped who he is today knowing where andwhat he wants to do, on asking Dunn where he sees himself in five years’ timehe turns to his phone and replies, “Hold on I have got it planned out on here.”Reading out his set plans of what hewants to accomplish in life, I come to realisethat half of his dreams and targets are already met. Although at such a youngage, Dunn’s plans don’t stop there as he now looks towards equity investmentsinto companies. With the new release of his newbook going on sale in 5 differentcountriesoffering8business ideasup for anyonewilling to takeon thechallenge,“Crack On”, is more than a book but an expression Dunn uses for life, “I am justlike crack on with it then.”Dunn’ success story shows that chasing your dreamsis possible through hard work and determination and that taking chances andbeingdifferent canonly have their advantages, “It is scary togoagainst thegrain,it’s human nature to follow the crowd but sometimes you just have to."

Jamie’s work has now sold 20,000 copies across 5 different countries.

AmourNoémie Noel guides us through the hidden agony played by two

legends of cinema, Emmanuelle Riva & Jean-Louis TrintignantWith Amour (love), the Austrian director Michael Hanekeastonishes, disconcerts, captures your mind. His work isextremely strong. Haneke chose to raise the humancondition issue. Nevertheless, Amour is first of all a wayto consider again how one perceives Love.

This is about Anne and Georges, an elderly couple whoare experiencing a huge ordeal in their lives. Anne’s(Emmanuelle Riva) state of health is deteriorating. Onehalf of her body paralysed, she gradually loses herabilities, and at the same time, her dignity. Indeed,George (Jean-Louis Trintignant) perfect in his role, exemplary husband remains by herside, impassive, but realistic. Emmanuelle Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant are veryconvincing, their strength is undoubtedly their likelihood.Amour takes the spectator over, at the heart of this stirring story. However, Haneke’ssuccess is also due to the freedom he gave to the actors, rooted in their roles asEmmanuelle Riva confesses: ‘He gave us very simple instructions […] he often repliedto our questions: ‘act the way you feel’ and she added: ‘His style made me think about

Le Nouveau Roman (French Literary Movement ofthe 21stth century) because we tell our actions, there is no state of feeling.Weattainedemotions byacting the situations, not thanks to us or Haneke’scold dialogues. In today’s Cinema, people overperform and over interpret. We wanted to besimple’.

In themost intimate scenesshot bya fixedcamera,no spectator can leave the cinema without beingdistressed or questioned by human condition ormore specifically the conditions of one’s death..The feeling is significant in this poignant work of art,and to watch Amour it is the perfect opportunity tomeaningfully experience love. - Noémie Noel

EasyReha Kansara gets to grips with a NY Times bestseller...

What a cliché I thought when I was firstoffered to review 'Easy' by TammaraWebber. High school. Couple.University. Breakup. And thewhole, 'I'llcome out stronger' thinking. I wascompletely and utterly wrong. Neverjudge a book by it's cover. Literally. Myinitial thought after finishing? I WANTMORE!

I found Easy to be one of those novelsthat had me in tears from page one, hooked as we witness the break up ofJacqueline with her ex-boyfriendKennedy, to her being attacked after aparty, the climax is sudden andshocking, with no space for a build-upandprelude ofwhatwas to come.Whatastounded me is the way the novelmanages to narrate to us theseclimaxes as a turning point forJacqueline, which focusesmore on the

manner in which they were dealt with. That is to say, it's not somuch the rape butthe issueof overbearing it. Movingon ismadehard for Jacquelineasher attackerrefuses to leave her alone, determined to get what he is after. But Jacqueline isnot consumed by her misfortune, instead she is able to grow from it, letting go,moving on and learning to love again.

Love? Is that love you say? How is Jacqueline able to love?Oh but she is. Lucasis a dream. Sure he holds that bad boy image, but don't let it fool you! Lucas iskind, respectful and understanding towards Jacqueline. And that's whatJacqueline falls for. It's not everyday that youare rapedand your knight in shiningarmour walks through the door to save you. Although he isn't exactly her saviour, making her his damsel-in-distress, he is empowering and supportive and helpsJacqueline to overcome her tragedy. There relationship is based on mutualrespect, admiration and genuine feelings. Their relationship truly is beautiful.

Green Goodness!Besma Whayeb tries out Ecover, a brand with a love for laundry, cleaning and the environment!

As any of my flatmates can tell you,I'm a little bit of a clean freak. One ofmy favourite things about livingexternally this year is access to adishwasher! But in all this time, itnever occured to me that there aredifferences incleaningproducts - andnot just in how well they work! That's where Ecover comes in.'Cleaningwith care' is their speciality, and that goes not only for their greenapproach to producing their productsbut also the way they work in thehome.I foundusing their LaundryLiquidandFabric Conditioner divine - workingwell both in thewashingmachine andfor hand washing delicate garments. But it was the Oven & Hob Cleanerthat really stole the show. After amessy time cooking bolognese, thehobwascovered in toughgrease (leftbottom picture) but within a couple ofminutes of spraying the cleaner on it,it wiped straight off!Further to their elbow-grease-freeeffect, they also smell good too. Thefabric conditioner is a clear winner forme, but even the sprays smell freshand clean, mainly of one citrus fruit oranother. It's 9/10 from me!

Villa Fail their January Exams!

A"dejected"Stephen"Ireland"trudges"off"after"the"semi7final"defeat"to"Bradford."

!

The first exam Villa had to tackle was the FA Cup module. Despitegetting off to a slow start and conceding the first goal, Villa eased to a 2-1FA cup 3rd round home victory over Ipswich with record signing Darren Bentkick-starting the fight back, showing the kind of finishing a £24 million strikercan give you, and Andy Weimann completing it with an intelligent loopingheader .

Next up was the league cup. Traditionally their favourite subject, Villahave finished top of the class no less than 5 times (only Liverpool haveperformed better in the knock-out tournament’s history) and would havestrongly fancied their chances against League Two’s Bradford City. However ‘The Bantams’ had already proved to be the slipperiest of bananaskins for Villa’s Premier League rivals Wigan & Arsenal dispatching both inpenalty shoot-outs.

While students upanddown the country anxiously await the resultsof the dreaded January exams, Aston Villa Football Club alreadyknow how they did - they failed miserably! - Henry Walker

Bradford’s team, whichreportedly cost just£7,500, outplayed andoutfought Villa in the firstleg to take a deserved 3-1aggregate score-line toVilla Park where they, embarrassingly for Villa, soaked up 90 minutes ofalmost constant pressureto become the first clubfrom England’s fourth tierto reach a major final for50 years!

!

Villa's Full Backs are Easy ScapegoatsIf a formation is to be judged onresults, which you would thinkwould be fair reasoning after 24games or so, then it’s safe to sayLambert’s complicated 5-2-3-1game plan is not working. Thesuccess of it depends on thetireless running of two kids intheir maiden Premier Leagueseason halting oppositionattacks and seconds laterwhipping the ball in at the by-line for the strikers and it is proving too much toask. And what’s more, without a winger playing in front of them, Lowton andBennet have been left hopelessly exposed on numerous occasions resultingin any mistake being magnified. Both players have bags of potential but therelentless bashing their confidence is taking at the moment is harming theirdevelopment.

No time for Villa’s youngsters to feel sorry forthemselves though because their FA Cup 4th round tieat Millwall was just 3 days later. Another nightmarenight led to Villa being dumped out of the Cup, thistime sickeningly by a last minute Millwall winner. Anyhopes Villa had of overshadowing this season’srecent depressing league form with some over-duesilverware were extinguished by two lower leagueteams in the space of a catastrophic week for the clubto consign this year’s campaign to nothing more than a relegation battle. Andmanager Paul Lambert is under no illusions that they have indeed now beensucked into the survival scrap giving this rallying cry on Monday morning-"Every game is a cup final, a fight, and you are going to have to knuckle downand fight. You have to fight for everything. Every game is going to have to bea cup final. Every game.” "We are going to have to go for it. We have to winand there are a few teams in the same situation. We have to hold our nerveand fight for everything."

! BIRMINGHAM!CITY!!!!!!!!!!FOOTBALL!CLUB!

Blues WILL Avoid Drop... Unless they go Bust!A St Andrew’s attendance of just 8,962 at Birmingham City’s recent FA Cup3rd round replay against Leeds United is a strong indication how badly theBlues are struggling on and, more worryingly, off the pitch.

Last season Bluenoses dreamt of bouncing back to the Promised Landthat is the Barclays Premier League at the first time of asking and verynearly did so reaching the semi-finals of the play offs narrowly losing toBlackpool. Despite a largely unchanged squad, this time round it is thebottom end of the table Birmingham have been occupying for almost theentire season.

However so far they have always done the bare minimum, scraping outa point and even a win when needed, to keep at least a comfortable 5 pointgap between themselves and the relegation places. In fact, ask anyBluenose about their club’s form and you would be hard pressed to find oneseriously worried about actually finishing the season in the drop-zone.

The issue which fills Birmingham fans with real dread is the totalabsence of their owner and the state of the club’s finances which couldpossibly lead to an administration & a relegation condemning 15 pointpenalty. It is an extremely rare and frankly sad situation when loyal fans ofa club are actually hoping to sell their star players to stave off the threat ofbankruptcy.

The club were recently forced to admit they are willing to listen to anyoffers for their senior players in an attempt to reduce the wage bill.Although it is speculated Nikola Zigic is the top earner at the club, it is risingstar Jack Butland who would demand the highest transfer fee with anumber of top-flight clubs keen admirers of the young Goalkeeper andwilling to pay several million pounds to secure his services.

Credit is due to the Birmingham City players for continuing to fight forthe cause in these troubled times with their future as professionalfootballers at the club in doubt.
