Chapter 7. Hardware sizing considerations

To ensure optimal performance of medium and large scale deployments of IBMSmartCloud Analytics - Log Analysis, we recommend the following hardwareconfiguration.v Use non virtualized, bare metal infrastructurev Enable hyper-threading in both the IBM SmartCloud Analytics - Log Analysis

and the IBM InfoSphere Data Explorer servers.v The underlying storage system should consist of:

– At least 8 300GB hard disks with at least 10,000 RPMs.– RAID 5 is recommended as the minimum level required for the IBM

InfoSphere Data Explorer file system. RAID 10 is recommended as theoptimal configuration.

v For the IBM InfoSphere Data Explorer file system, we recommend that you useRAID 10 as the RAID configuration. RAID 5 is also supported. However, youmust use one of these, IBM InfoSphere Data Explorer does not support any ofthe other RAID levels.

v For the IBM SmartCloud Analytics - Log Analysis server, we recommend thatyou use RAID 1 or higher. This assumes that you install IBM InfoSphere DataExplorer on a separate server.

v Network-attached storage is not supported or recommended.v Remotely shared file systems are not recommend for either server.v We recommend that all external based file systems are SAN only.v The underlying IP network must support a minimum of 1GB per second transfer

rates.v We recommend periodic auditing and analysis of the installation to ensure that

performance remains optimal and that future requirements are identified quickly.

If you do not follow our recommendations and use a virtual environment, werecommend that the CPU, memory, and disk IO are each dedicated and not shared.
