BIM in Principle and in Practice

Peter Barnes and Nigel DaviesCovering the principles behind BIM, its current use in practice and how it may develop in the future, BIM in Principle and in Practice provides construction professionals with an overview of this emerging field to enable informed discussion with clients and colleagues.

BIM is a managed approach to the creation, collation and exchange of shared intelligent and structured data and information across a project. As its use grows there is an increasing need for construction practitioners to understand the principles behind it and how work practices have to change to accommodate it. Full collaboration across the entire project team and standardised, well-structured information are at the heart of BIM and will enable enormous efficiencies in the construction industry. BIM in Principle and in Practice is intended to assist in understanding BIM and how it can be used and provide answers to many of the common questions.

BIM in Principle and in Practice•Stresses the importance of integrated practice and collaboration and interoperability of data and any models

•Sets out the details that a typical Protocol Document may contain, to provide the project team with a road map to understanding the aims and objectives of the BIM, it’s rules and how it may be assembled

•Provides comprehensive consideration of the legal issues surrounding implementation of BIM on a project

Providing insight for all construction professionals – consultants, contractors, sub-contractors, designers, architects, project managers, surveyors, site managers, facilities managers, lawyers – and their clients and relevant to all companies and projects, whatever their size and geographical market, the advice and illustrative case studies within this book form the ultimate practical guide to current practice and a valuable vision for the future.

Peter Barnes is a Director of Blue Sky ADR Ltd. Peter has been actively involved in the Construction Industry for almost 40 years, and has been actively involved in the design process, in contracting and in consultancy works in the construction and civil engineering industries during those years. Peter is a Chartered Conservationist and through his involvement with the Joint Contracts Tribunal (where he is a member of the Council) he has developed a great interest in sustainable building processes and collaborative contract relationships; and this led onto the decision to co-Author this book on BIM In Principle and In Practice.

Nigel Davies is a Director of Blue Sky ADR Ltd. Nigel is both a Chartered Builder and Chartered Surveyor, he has a Masters in the Built Environment, and has a wide and extensive range of practical and commercial experience. Amongst other things, Nigel provides commercial and contractual management, construction claims and alternative dispute resolution services to the construction and civil engineering industries. Nigel has worked and acted for employers, architects, main contractors and specialist sub-contractors in providing quantity surveying and construction contract services. Nigel sits on the Council of the Joints Contracts Tribunal and is a member of the Sustainability Sub-Committee of that Council; and, because of that, the use and integration of the BIM process in this and other regards is of particular interest to Nigel.

The Contractors The Story of British Civil Engineering Contractors

H. Ferguson and M. Chrimes

Following the success of The Civil Engineers, the authors turn their insight and passion to civil engineering contractors.

Fully illustrated in colour, the first history of British civil engineering contractors charts the development of contracting from the 18th century to the present day, with profiles of many key figures and organisations in the industry through the ages. This book explains to those who work for contractors, or who deal with them, what the business is about and where it comes from, and shares with a wider audience the exploits of these adventurers. Readers will experience the boom of the canal and railway eras, working at home and abroad, the difficulties and opportunities brought by wars, the equipment used and the specialists and sub-contractors of today.

Worked Examples for Buildings: EN 1990 to EN 1997 and UK National Annexes

Edited by K. Ranasinghe

This book is the first in a series of practical design guides to Eurocodes, which will complement the Designers’ Guides to the Eurocodes. Worked Examples for Buildings provides extensive worked examples for the design of typical everyday building elements and assemblages, covering multiple Eurocodes to reflect the processes involved in designing a real structure.

Worked Examples for Buildings: EN 1990 to EN 1997 and UK National Annexes covers the basis of design, loading, concrete, steel, composite steel and concrete, timber, masonry and foundation designs. This book also provides examples of designing the structure of complete buildings. Unlike most Eurocode guides, which only cover individual codes relevant to specific elements, this book takes a through-project approach, referring to multiple Eurocodes in order to reflect the real process of designing a complex structure.

Designers’ Guide to Eurocode 3: Design of Steel Buildings, 2nd edition EN 1993-1-1, -1-3 and -1-8

L. Gardner and D. Nethercot

This series of Designers’ Guides to the Eurocodes provides comprehensive guidance in the form of design aids, indications for the most convenient design procedures and worked examples. The books also include background information to aid the designer in understanding the reasoning behind and the objectives of the codes.

Providing the most comprehensive and up-to-date set of design guidance currently available, this book concentrates on the most commonly encountered aspects of structural steel design, with an emphasis on the situation in buildings. Much of its content is therefore devoted to the provisions of Part 1.1 General rules and rules for buildings of EN 1993: Design of steel structures, however, this is supplemented by material on joints (Part 1.8), cold-formed design (Part 1.3), and loading (EN 1990 and EN 1991).

Delay and Disruption Claims in Construction, 2nd edition A Practical Approach

A. Haidar and P. Barnes

Containing new and updated case law and case studies, Delay and Disruption Claims in Construction, 2nd edition is an internationally-applicable, practical resource that guides professionals through every type and aspect of delay and disruption claims.

Drawing on their experience, the authors outline a practical approach to the presentation of delay and disruption claims in construction within a legal, contractual and technical framework. Detailed case studies are used to describe the different problems that can be encountered and explain the more dynamic approach to the settlement of claims, often taken in the international market, to help reduce the time and cost of legal proceedings.

FIDIC Users’ Guide, 3rd edition A Practical Guide to the Red, Yellow, MDB Harmonised and Subcontract Books

B. Barr and L. Grutters (originally created by Brian Totterdill)

Previous editions of the FIDIC users’ guide: A practical guide to the 1999 Red, Yellow, MDB Harmonised and Subcontract Books have established it as the most practicable and helpful guide available for practising contract administrators. The new edition builds on Brian Totterdill’s legacy and will ensure that all users are brought up-to-date with the most recent FIDIC developments and its expansion into a more international arena.

The new authors bring over 40 years’ in-depth FIDIC experience to the book, and have revised and expanded the guide accordingly, including a more detailed section on the MDB, as well as a new section on the subcontract to the Red. Recent case studies and experiences, and newly published forms of contract, are featured to increase knowledge, stimulate better contract administration and highlight accountability.

Movable Bridge Design

C. Birnstiel, G. Foerster and W. Bowden

Movable bridges are essential elements of highway, railway and waterway transportation systems of many countries. Worldwide, there are thousands of movable bridges of many types with spans ranging from a few meters to over 300 meters. Some are more than a century old. In the USA, there are about 3000 movables of which 2000 are highway bridges and 1000 support railways. British Waterways has 400 movables under its purview and there are hundreds in Europe.

Movable Bridge Design is a unique reference on past and current structural, mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic design for engineers in, or about to enter, this interdisciplinary field.

A Guide to the Reservoirs Act 1975, 2nd edition

Defra and T. Hill

A Guide to the Reservoirs Act 1975 provides expert guidance on the application of the Reservoirs Act 1975, reflecting the current views and practices of the dam engineering profession.

This fully updated second edition incorporates the latest amendments to the Flood and Water Management Act, reflecting a more risk-based approach to reservoir regulation. These approaches include reducing the capacity at which a reservoir will be regulated from 25,000m³ to 10,000m³, and ensuring that only those reservoirs assessed as a higher risk are subject to regulation.
