ICT APPLICATION IN TEACHING AND LEARNING IN MALAYSIA

Page 3: ICT Presentation

ICT application are important part of teaching and learning. The Ministry of

Education had invest huge effort in terms of funding and training to equip teachers

and students with ICT skills. Many types of teaching process can be taught by using

ICT as long as the teachers know how to use it. When teaching, teachers can use ICT

to get information, or to present their teaching by the software inside the ICT such as

microsoft (word, powerpoint, excel, etc.). ICT also provide students with many

information. Besides that, students can access the enormous amount of information

quickly.

Next, students also can interact with peers and experts outside the classroom. This

means that they can meet and study with new people. Thus, the learning process

Page 4: ICT Presentation

would become more efficient as they can learn from the teachers outside the

classroom rather than waiting for their in-the-class teachers to teach them. This allow

the soft skills of students to be improvised as they meet with new people and new type

of learning.

ICT also meant to diversify teaching-learning methods and practices. By using

technologies, many new methods is introduced. Thus, enhancing the education

efficiency, effectiveness and productivity.

ISSUES ABOUT ICT

1. Electronic bookIn 2001, the Ministry initiated the Electronic Book Project to see how this device can

be used to improve teaching and learning and solving the perennial problem of heavy

school bags. It is conducted in 35 schools over a period of 5 months. As a result, the

device does improve computer and technology knowledge, as well as engaged

students in reading and learning.

2. Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC)The Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) was established in 1996 with the aspiration of

becoming a global hub for ICT and multimedia operation, innovation and services to

transform Malaysia into a knowledge-economy and achieve developed nation status in

line with Vision 2020.

3. Smart SchoolSmart School is defined as an initiative which uses a technology platform as a

medium on which distance learning and specific teaching expertise are made available

to remote locations.

4. Notebook 1MalaysiaThe distribution of free notebook 1Malaysia is an important project in support of High

Speed Broadband (HSBB) and National Broadband Initiative (NBI) to achieve

broadband penetration of 75% by 2015. To supply the laptops, a sum of RM 1 billion

was allocated under the Universal Service Provision (USP) fund.

5. Teaching Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI)PPSMI is a government policy aimed to improve the English language level among

primary and secondary schools in 2003. Government had launched a program called

Teaching and Learning Science, Mathematics and English (SME) in secondary

schools by using and integrating ICT application.

THE CHALLENGES

Page 6: ICT Presentation

1. Lack of FinanceThe uses of ICT in school had consumed billions because of the high cost of the

hardware, software, maintenance and for training of staff. Thus, the only way to solve

this problem is by balancing the educational goals with our country's economic

realities.

2. Students not taking serious of the ICT subjectMany students found that the ICT subject is not important for them as they have many

other subject to study. Some students also using the time during ICT subject to play

video games and watching online videos. The way to solve this problem is to make

the students know the importance of learning ICT for the future.

3. InfrastuctureNot all school have the proper infrastructure to improvised the learning of ICT

subject. Thus, government has to supply the infrastructure such as proper electrical

wiring, ventilation, safety, internet security and availability of electricity and

telephony.

4. Teachers lack of ICT skillsMost of teachers does not want to teach using ICT frequently. This make them to

easily forgot what had been taught to them about ICT skills. As a solution, teachers

must use what they have been taught to make them master of the skills needed.

5. Wi-Fi problemLecturers and students having problem during uploading modules and submitting

assignment because of slow wifi network. This problem only can be solved by

improvise the network.

CONCLUSION

Many of the issues and challenges associated with ICTs in education. It is generally

Page 7: ICT Presentation

believed that ICT can empower teachers and students, making significant

contributions to learning and achievement. It is surely have its negative side of the

issues, but the positive side of it had overcome the negative side. ICT had made our

life become more easier as all the things can be done without using so much energy.

The future can become more special for us if we can overcome the challenges in the

teaching and learning of ICT.
