Welcome to Interior Design Show West! For many of you this is a first visit to IDSwest—for others, IDSwest is an annual ritual. We take great pride in showcasing the best in contemporary design and continually challenging ourselves each year to introduce new elements to the show—features that foster collaboration and creativity which is truly the essence of design.
This year we’ve raised the bar with our largest charitable endeavour to date. The Homes & Living Laneway Feature Home, built by Alair Homes and designed by Vancouver’s own Gaile Guevara and her team at Modern604. Its sale by auction, on-site at IDSwest, will benefit the Alzheimer Society of B.C. Check out page 8 to learn more.
2013 also brings the announcement of Western Living Design Week and Monogram Dinner by Design, both in partnership with IDSwest. These partnerships expand the reach of IDSwest beyond the walls of this convention centre and beyond a single weekend—further unifying the West Coast design community.
These initiatives, and many more, would not be possible without the support of our many Exhibitors and Sponsors. They’re here to inspire you with trends, ideas and new products for your home! So whether you're putting items on your dream wish list or sourcing for an upcoming project, be sure to make IDSwest your annual design hub!

The art of Living SmallAs David Babakaiff sees it, IDSwest is a confluence of hundreds of leading design industry figures and members of the public—the ideal setting in which to launch a conversation about laneway homes. The hope, says the president of the Lower Mainland franchise of Alair Homes, is that seeing a concrete example of ‘the art of living small’ will invigorate discussion on how and why to embark on laneway living. In short, it’s intended to be a catalyst.
“We want to focus emotion and opinion around density in the Metro Vancouver Region, to bring attention to it through an excellent execution of the concept of a laneway home,” explains Babakaiff. “This is an opportunity to have questions answered and to add context to the idea.”

He’s hoping that seeing the H&L Laneway Home’s modern, space saving and smart design in person will create momentum for the concept, and he expects it to be a talking point at IDSwest’s discussion panels and amongst attendees both during and following the show.
By systematizing parts of the construction process—including having wiring integrated into wall panels in advance of construction—Babakaiff and interior designer Gaile Guevara believe that the H&L Laneway demonstrates a more efficient method of building.
They also think more attention should be paid to how laneways allow for multi-generational living, rental accommodation and aging in place on a property. The last has special resonance for Guevara following her mother’s diagnosis of early onset Alzheimer’s in December 2012.
“Laneways are an opportunity to keep families together, especially since it’s harder and harder for younger people to get into the housing market. With a joint investment, you can see families living together for the long term. It just seems like we need to talk about options,” Guevara says. In theory, a young couple could live out back in the early years of building their family, with the parents in the main home; in time, they could swap housing as their needs change.
“I also wanted to bring purpose to this project by creating awareness about Alzheimer’s—to channel energy into something that I can actually do.”
A gingko tree in the garden surrounding the H&L Laneway signifies memory, while a swing created by Brent Comber alludes to the power of childhood memories. The home will be sold by auction on World Alzheimer’s Day (Sept 21), with the net proceeds donated to the Alzheimer Society of BC.

IDSwest has always offered the most extensive representation of edgy, forward thinking new designers from across the country. This year is no exception. Be sure to look for some of the hottest, youngest talent for 2013 in Studio North.
Photos by Trunk Studio
Independent designers Brad Mullen and Stuart Lodge met while studying industrial design in Edmonton, Alberta. Since first working together in 2011 they have collaborated on various projects such as furniture, lighting and installations. Their design work focuses on both the physical and the experiential as they approach each design by creating unique user experiences and interactions. Don’t miss their latest collaboration for IDSwest called NVGTN—it
takes inspiration from the objects and environments that surround Vancouver, particularly an ocean buoy, which are both physically and conceptually familiar to the Vancouver harbour and coastline. Ocean buoys have many purposes but these often relate to systems of communication to guide vessels through the water. By pulling aesthetic cues through abstract forms of ocean buoys, the IDSwest audience will be able to navigate through this installation.

Don’t miss the five amazing design projects that were produced for the inaugural Structure program by BCWood. The designers were given Brisco Manufacturing’s LVL material and challenged to come up with an original design from this material, typically used for structural architectural applications. If you missed our sneak peek of these at Buildex in January, be sure to check it out on the main isle of the show floor at this year’s IDSwest.
New for 2014: We are thrilled to welcome Weyerhaeuser and their Parallam SLS product as the sponsor of the 2014 program. If you think you’ve got what it takes to push the boundaries of wood product design, we want to hear from you!

Real beauty speaks for itself. We could mention our custom burners that deliver a full spectrum of heat output from a tender flame to an intense blaze. Or reference the carefully handcrafted construction. But that’s not what makes the 48" Pro Range a verfect centerpiece for your kitchen. It’s the fact that you don’t even need to know all this to fall in love with it.

FOREST & WAVES
Those gorgeous Vancouver Special tea towels that made an appearance at the media preview were designed and created by non other than Edward Juan, the artist/designer behind the website Forest & Waves. Ed was born in Kaohsiung, Taiwan and moved to Canada when he was eleven. He attended Parsons School of Design in New York City, later transferred to California Institute of the Arts graduated in Character Animation. Ed worked at Laika as a visual development artist for almost 6 years before moving to Vancouver, British Columbia. In 2013, he founded Forest & Waves studio to brand his fabric and paper goods.
Forest & Waves came about from Ed’s passion for the outdoor: camping in the forest and surfing on the waves. Check out more from Forest & Waves in The District.

IDSwest and GE Monogram are thrilled to introduce you to Monogram Dinner by Design, produced by The Social Concierge. Earlier this week lucky patrons took part in a unique, two-day experience
that redefined the traditional fundraising, cocktail and dinner party. Elevating the sensorial experience, well-known interior designers and members of the design community—Kelly Deck, Craig Stanghetta and Amanda Forrest, to name a few—joined Monogram Dinner by Design, to create one-of-a-kind, forward thinking tablescapes that were on display at The Imperial. Proceeds raised from this event benefited The Dr. Peter AIDS Foundation. If you were unable to attend, you’re in luck; select tablescapes from this event are being showcased at this year’s IDSwest.
Vern has returned to IDSwest after taking a well-deserved break from his normal routine of standing all day.
Straight Line Designs Inc. is a one-of-a-kind workshop that has been operating out of Vancouver, British Columbia for the past 27 years and Judson Beaumont is renowned for his whimsical and unique style. His latest piece of furniture titled Vern, was designed to take it easy. Beaumont teamed up with the talented Steve Rystephanuk from Pull & Staple Upholstery Inc. to make the beautiful upholstered benches for Vern and his friends. Make sure to drop by for a visit and say “Hi” to Vern on the show floor.
A deconstructed look at outdoor living and the natural environment featuring the work of Brent Comber, Robert Sangster, Tsunami Glassworks & others. Each year the Bar is the centre hub of IDSwest, 2013 is no different. Be sure to check out The Bar, by ROLLOUT and stay a while for a sip or chat! It’s a great place to catch up on all things design.
