“Why then do you baptize, if you are not the Christ or Elijah or the Prophet?” It’s always hard for us to discover ourselves as the source of disappointment to others. It’s distressing to feel like we let down our parents or mentors, the people who invested their hopes in us. We also don’t want to be a source of buyer’s resources for our friends, who thought we were better than this. John the Baptist weathered the crisis of being a serious disappointment to the multitudes that sought his baptism. Even more so, his execution by King Herod would be a tremendous blow to his many disciples—including the apostle Philip, who once followed John before he pointed toward Jesus. John never claimed to be the great white hope people imagined him to be: not the Messiah, not the reincarnation of Elijah, not “the one who is to come”. John was content to “decrease,” so that Jesus might “increase”. Do you know when it’s time to shine, and when to withdraw so that others might share their light?

Juan nunca afirmó ser la gran esperanza blanca que la gente pensaba que era: no el Mesías, no era la reencarnación de Elías, no era "el que ha de venir". Juan se contentaba con "disminuirse" para que Jesús pudiera "engrandecerse".

Third Sunday of Advent The Church looks like Advent for as long as possible. When Christmas does come we celebrate it rather quietly. We celebrate Christmas at night, first stopping at the manger scene and entering by the side aisle. This year it is a short Advent season. We are preparing to celebrate the coming of Christ in mystery.
Tercer Domingo de Adviento La Iglesia se parece a Adviento durante el mayor tiempo posible. Cuando llega la Navidad, la celebramos en silencio. Taizé Prayer The prayer service’s emphasis is “peace.” You are invited to pray for your needs and the needs of our troubled world at a Taizé Prayer Service held today, December 17, at 7 pm in the Benedictine Sisters’ Monastery Chapel located at 840 S. Main Street, Mt. Angel, OR.
