O’WEEK Semester 2

Noodle Night Monday evening saw the inaugural IHD Noodle Night take place in the coveted Red Room. Students,

new and old, from many nationalities came to sample what we in Australia call “uni food” – noodles in a

cup. Residents continued making new friends over noodles and soft drink whilst playing giant size

Jenga. It was attended by nearly 70 people and the novelty of free noodles appealed to all that

attended. Watch out for the next noodle night.

AFL Trip 20 residents ventured to TIO Stadium to watch our

national game, AFL. Brisbane and Melbourne put on

a closely fought contest for our guests showing the

skills with the oval ball. After some instruction from

Matthew about how the game is played, residents

quickly were able to follow the tactic employed by

the teams, and most importantly, the score.

A great evening had by all.

Pudakul Day Trip

On Friday IHD were first-time tourists to the Pudakul Aboriginal Cultural Tour near Humpty Doo. The tour is run by Graham and Lynette Kenyon and their daughter Diane, and is one of the few genuine opportunities to see the indigenous culture first hand and learn things about their culture that are so rarely shared with people who aren’t of aboriginal descent.

Graham and his family were enormously generous with their time and knowledge, and no questions were off limits. The tour started with a special welcome to country performed by Diane to bring good luck to all and to connect us with their land. It involved water from the local billabong being spat on the head of all the visitors! Next we learnt about the uses for the local flora including painting, fishing and healing wounds.

We saw the way they cooked, learnt to play the didgeridoo, learnt about family lines and skin colour, and saw how they create beautiful dilly bags and baskets using the pandanus tree and dye’s found in the local wilderness.

Graham, the owner of Pudakul, is an inspirational character. He has made great choices in his life to pursue upholding traditions, caring for and returning Kakadu and the top end to its former glory (before Europeans and buffalo’s came through), and being a conduit between aboriginal people and the rest of us so that we better understand this fascinating culture and way of life.

We will definitely be going there in the future, whether you are a new or returning resident/iGrow member, don’t miss out. This is a “must-do” territory experience.

Welcome BBQ

The first week of IHD’s O’Week for Semester Two started with a stellar Aussie BBQ at Sitzlers Court.

Resident Leaders earlier in the week personally invited all residents via door-attached invitations to a

social gathering over dinner. Marinated Ribs and Steak with salads filled stomachs whilst residents new

and old started what we hope to be lifelong friendships. Attending these social events are a fantastic

way to meet new friends, catch up with old ones, and just relax from a hard session in the classroom –

so make sure you drag yourself away from the books, and enjoy the rest of the semesters events here

at IHD.

Red Frogs Casino Night The Red Frogs held their first Casino Night of the Semester with bigger and more interesting prizes than

usual. Residents came and left victorious having won assortment of food, and household items. For

those who attended - hope you had great fun and for those who missed out on the opportunity to have

fun, win free prizes and meet new people, remember to drop by the Sitzler Court when Casino night is

back on. Remember, at IHD’s Casino Nights organised by the Red Frogs, it’s not “the house that always

wins,” instead it is the Residents that always have a good time!

Coffee and Cake On the 16th of July, Pat & Cecelia came over with the

Walkabout Coffee van and helped us make the first

Coffee & Cake of the semester a huge success! We

had the couches in the Red Room arranged for the

once a semester “Speed Friending” extravaganza,

with Residents piling in to make new friends and

drink some Iced Chocolate! With forty residents in

the room it was packed and everyone got to enjoy

different assortments of cakes and biscuits, even

Liam & Troy from the Red Frogs came down to help out with the event. Looking back on the night it was

a great event, all due to simply the participation of the IHD residents who were there and we would like

all IHD residents and our iGrow members to come down to our fortnightly Coffee & Cake to mix mingle

and have a good time.

Out and About Tour

Out and About in Darwin was a great trip to the city

centre where we visited the Crocosaurus Cove and

cooled down at the Wavepool after an action-packed

day. The Crocosaurus Cove is a unique location to

see Australia’s most deadliest animals like the world

famous Saltwater Crocodile and other reptiles.

Although at this time none of our residents were brave

enough to jump into the famous Cage of Death. After

discovering Darwin’s boutique shopping malls we headed down to the Wavepool where we all could

relax, sunbathe and ride one of those bigger waves. We hope you all enjoyed this trip and please keep

your eyes open for IHD’s upcoming iGrow Location experiences.

NOTICES Safety and Security

Recently there have been several incidents of theft around IHD.

We would like to again remind residents to always close kitchen, bathroom and other common room doors. By keeping these doors closed at all times it reduces the risk of outsiders entering these areas and IHD is able to audit the electronic locks to check who has open them.

This is for your own safety and security. The best way for residents to protect the IHD community is to be vigilant, get to recognise their fellow residents and report suspicious activity, unacceptable behaviour or odd behaviour to the IHD Office or Resident Leader on Duty (phone 8946 6591).

IHD and the University are not responsible for any damage or loss caused to items located on the premises. Residents are encouraged to take out appropriate insurance. You are advised to check that the contents policy you are purchasing is valid for a residential accommodation setting.

Smoke Alarms

There are fire sensors and smoke alarms in each building and in each room of IHD. Residents must use the range hood above the stove and monitor their food to ensure it does not burn to reduce the risk of setting the fire alarms off and activating the fire alarm which will automatically result in the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Services attending the scene. The use of cooking appliances, candles, incense, oil burners, pest bombs, toasters or cigarettes in residents’ rooms in prohibited.

Where the fire service is called out on a false alarm IHD is charged by the fire service in ex-cess of $1,000. Consistent with the IHD Resident Handbook, when IHD incurs these costs, they will be applied to the residents ac-count and they will be required to reimburse IHD for these expenses. http://www.cdu.edu.au/ihd/rules-of-conduct Every Resident Leader is a designated “Fire Warden”. If a fire alarm sounds, residents must evacuate their room and move calmly to the car parks of IHD, regardless of the incon-venience. IHD staff and Resident Leaders are required by law to enter rooms during fire alarms to ensure that all residents have been safely evacuated. The privacy of guests is

respected wherever possible, but safety is a priority in an emergency situation. Mail and Freight IHD does not have a mail delivery service for residents. The CDU Post Office provides a mail receiving and holding service for IHD residents.

Residents may hire a post office box at the CDU Post Office or they may use the Post Restante (counter collection) service.

PO boxes provide the fastest, most convenient and most secure means of receiving mail and are accessible at any time of the day. IHD residents receive a discount price for PO box hire at the CDU Post Office. PO box hire is for 12 months from April to March and costs about $33 (2012 rate). A home or forwarding address should be provided when residents depart IHD so that mail addressed to them can be forwarded. Make sure that you regularly check the Post Office in Building 1, Red Precinct for any mail you may be expecting. To have mail delivered to IHD directly please ensure you have the correct address Your Name International House Darwin Building 1, Brown Precinct Casuarina Campus Charles Darwin University Ellengowan Drive DARWIN NT 0909 Australia Students are reminded that all incoming and outgoing freight (including Parcel’s) needs to be received via the IHD Office. TNT, Air express and other freight providers have designated collection points and will not deliver directly to your rooms. This includes air satchels. Recently delivery trucks have been requested to deliver directly to rooms. DO NOT phone couriers direct requesting collection from your room.

IHD Office will call you as soon as you receive any mail or packages.
