Do you have an interest in the United Nations?

The Model United Nations conference aims to provide opportunities for CDU students and IHD residents to experience diplomacy and international relations at their peak, as well as and develop skills in leadership, public speaking and negotiation.

The conference will be a simulation of the United Nations General Assembly where delegates will take on the roles of UN ambassadors representing member states and engage in a full day of debate and negotiation, with the aim of finding suitable solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues.

Attendees are set to gain invaluable practical experience in diplomacy and improve their skills in leadership, public speaking, teamwork and negotiation whilst enhancing their knowledge of international issues.

Model United Nations conferences are internationally recognised as prestigious university events, and participation could put students in good standing for future employment. Moreover, CDU Model United Nations provides students with a chance to enrich their university life with some ‘academic fun’ and interdisciplinary networking.

There are a number of advantages for IHD residents to participate in this program. Firstly, as stated above, opportunities like Model United Nations provide chances for students to gain more familiarity with the university, which will contribute towards creating a community feeling in IHD and achieving student satisfaction.

Additionally, the Chair of the United Nations Youth NT, Sarah Tam-Perez, and some of her team will be joining in to help demonstrate as well as provide more insight on the United Nations Assembly to our participants.

Protect yourself against mosquitosWith the heavy rainfall recently received in the Darwin and East Arnhem areas mosquito numbers expected to increase and IHD residents are urged to protect themselves from mosquito bites.

Mosquitos are most active around sunset and sunrise but also during the night. They can carry the Ross River and Murray Valley encephalitis virus.

To minimise the chance of being bitten by mosquitoes people should: • Wear protective light-coloured clothing with long sleeves, long trousers and ankle protection

with socks, between dusk and dawn in areas where mosquito bites are likely• Avoid outdoor exposure around dusk, and at night, near wetlands and areas of dense

vegetation as well as other areas of high mosquito activity• Use a protective repellent containing 20% DEET or Picaridin and other mosquito protection

devices as a supplement to protective clothing when outdoors at night in areas of mosquito activity.

International House Brisbane visitOur lovely Finance Officer, Kalindi Marnell, was very privileged to visit the office team at International House Brisbane located near the University of Queensland.

Kalindi spent time with each team member to see their procedures and processes and had the opportunity to complete a full tour of their accommodation.

It was certainly a worthwhile visit and some great ideas were shared on how we can

improve our processes and service to our residents in Darwin and Brisbane.

NOTICESKitchen drawer padlocks

Each resident living at IHD has been issued with a kitchen drawer.

It is the responsibility of the resident to obtain their own padlock for this drawer to secure their items.

IHD can take no responsibility for items taken from kitchen drawers.

If you would like to purchase a padlock, they are available from the IHD office or local shops.

It’s that time of year!

It’s that time of year when new friendships are forming and people are socialising a lot.

It’s that time of year where assignments and study loads are starting to impact on most residents.

And it’s that time of year when the weather in Darwin is challenging us all.

So it’s that time of year when tolerances get tested and stress levels may build.

Please be kind to your neighbours and considerate of their lifestyle needs as well as your own.

Bicycle Permits

Are you keeping your bicycle at IHD?

Have you obtained your bike permit from the IHD Office?

Residents are asked to register their bicycle with IHD by obtaining a bike permit. This allows us to keep track of which bicycles should be stored on IHD grounds and which should be removed.

Event reviewsTerritory Wildlife ParkWritten by KatOn a hot late Sunday afternoon on 22 March 2015, a group of 12 residents made their way to the Territory Wildlife Park in Berry Springs.

Our first stop after arriving was to watch the park’s famous bird show, where trained birds show off their natural and trained behaviour. IHD Resident Sally bravely overcame her fear of birds and made it through the whole show! After the show the residents had the

chance to take pictures with an owl and a wedge-tailed eagle while alieving their curiosity by asking many questions about the NT’s various bird species.

On the way to the next attraction we came across a tree that was covered in green ants and Linda told us that the backside of the ants taste like lemon. Our curiosity was aroused and we couldn’t believe it when Linda took one and

licked its backside. When she offered another one to us we kindly declined. No ant was harmed that day; I believe the ant might even have enjoyed it.

After this educational demonstration we made our way to the monsoon forest where we experienced a thunderstorm display which was accompanied by real thunder. During the forest walk Jeremy was lucky to see his first wild wallaby and take some great photographs. We left the park later than expected as the half hourly train might have forgotten that there were still people in the park waiting. While one half of the group waited at a train stop and was busy catching little frogs, the other half were sitting outside the already closed cafe starving. The trip went very well and the residents arrived back at IHD tired but happy.

Pakistan DayWritten by FarhanPakistan Day or Pakistan Resolution Day, also Republic Day, is a national holiday in Pakistan to commemorate the Lahore Resolution of 1940 and the adoption of the first constitution of Pakistan during the transition of the Dominion of Pakistan to the Islamic

Republic of Pakistan on 23 March 1940 making Pakistan the world’s first Islamic republic.

Pakistan Day was celebrated for the first time at International House Darwin on the 23rd of March. The event preparation started at 3 pm which included cooking Pakistani dishes in building 17. The various dishes prepared were Chicken Sashlik, Mutton Polao, Marinated Lamb Chops and Raita.

The food was served at

Sitzler Court at 7 pm followed by video clips about Pakistan and its history.

Around 35 to 40 residents showed up and the food was devoured in minutes. Everyone appreciated the food and it was great to teach residents about Pakistan’s food and history.

Table Tennis TournamentWritten by Varmaa The semester 1, 2015 Table Tennis Tournament was held in the IHD Games Room on Sunday, 29 March. The tournament began at 1 pm with 8 residents playing in the singles tournament and 4 residents playing doubles tournament.

The first match was between Felipe and Renz. This match went for 3 sets and Felipe won 2 of the sets for the win. The second match was between Octavia and Jigme, Octavia certainly had the advantage here and one in 2 straight sets. The third match was between

the Kumbirai and Farhan, this game was interesting as Farhan won the first set, but Kumbirai won beautifully by gaining the remaining 2 sets. The fourth match was between the losers of first 2 matches, Renz won the game by achieving the 2 sets continuously.

Then the exciting semi- final matches began, the first match was between Felipe and Octavia, this match was so exciting, the first set was won by Felipe, the second set won

by Octavia, the third deciding set was went for a long time and was finally won by Felipe to move on to the Finals. The second semi-final was between

Kumbirai and Renz, where Renz won easily by taking the first two sets to reach finals.

The final was between Felipe and Renz, where Felipe played an extraordinary game to become the champion!

In the doubles event, Farhan and Katie were in one team while and Rangga and I were in the other team. Farhan and Katie played strategically to become a champion in the doubles!

At last the prize was distributed for the champions and runners up. For the champions, the prize was movie tickets and the runners up received a table tennis kit.
