Hi all

Congratulations on making it to the end of the semester! Many of you are still in the midst of exams and assessments, but the end is in sight, and you should feel very proud.

Things are winding down at IHD for the year, but they’re certainly not stopping completely. We still have our last Mindil shuttle of the year on Thursday (don’t forget to stay for the fireworks!), our Halloween BBQ on Friday and Melbourne Cup festivities on Tuesday, 4 November. The Melbourne Cup is an Australian tradition where everyone pauses to watch “the race that stops the nation.” It’s a horse race held in Melbourne, but it provides fun and entertainment for people around the country as we dress up and wear crazy hats! There’ll even be sweepstakes for everyone to enter and, even more excitingly, our brand new 2014 IHD yearbooks will be for sale at this event! Come and get yours before they sell out!

Finally, a huge farewell to the exchange students and CDU students leaving us this semester. You’ve added much to our community, and we’ve loved having you. Now we wish you every success in your future endeavours, and do hope that you’ll stop in and visit us soon! To the rest of you – have a fantastic “summer” break and we can’t wait to see you again in 2015!

Best wishes

Aurora Indigenous Study TourNathan Canuto

Our very own IHD resident, Nathan Canuto, is one of 19 university students across Australia who has been selected to take part in the Aurora Indigenous Study Tour.

The tour will see Nathan visit some of the world’s top universities. He will spend three weeks in the United States visiting Harvard, Stanford, University of California Berkeley, Columbia and NYU and approximately 10 days in the United Kingdom visiting Cambridge and Oxford.

The tour will provide an opportunity for participants to gain insight into the realities of undertaking postgraduate study at these premier institutions and will include meeting current students in the areas of the participants’ interests, sitting in on lectures and having one-on-one meetings with professors and key administrative staff.

Nathan said he was keen to explore study options at Harvard. He said he’s researched one particular masters course and said it focuses on the organisational side of psychology which is exactly where he aims to go!

It won’t be all fun and games though; Nathan will have to sit two of his CDU exams while he’s away to complete his Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology).

Nathan is such a motivated and inspiring young man! We wish him the best of luck with his exams and the study tour!

IHD Wedding Congratulations Nathan and Emily!IHD would like to congratulate Nathan Fanning and Emily Buchanan on their wedding!

Nathan and Emily met at IHD in 2010 when Emily came to IHD as an exchange student and Nathan worked at IHD as a Resident Leader.

Nathan said “IHD was where we first met, fell in love and lived for a long time, so the place means a lot to us.”

They said their vows in Canada in September in front of family and friends and had a second celebration in Darwin last weekend with their Aussie friends.

IHD is thrilled for the two and wishes them a long, happy and prosperous life together!

Cyclone Season ReminderWith the cyclone season fast approaching, it’s timely for IHD to remind its residents of the potential danger and how to protect yourself in the event of a cyclone.

The cyclone season officially runs from 1 November to 30 April each year; however cyclonic events have been known to occur outside this period.

Preparing for a cyclone is one of the most important steps to ensure the safety of yourself and others. If there is a threat of a cyclone, IHD will keep residents up to date via email and SMS. For this reason it’s important we have your most up to date details!

If your contact details have recently changed please update us by visiting IHD Reception during office hours (9am to 5pm) or sending an email to: [email protected].

Safety Awareness Week Prize Winners Thank you to all IHD residents and staff who participated in the Safety Awareness Week which was held in the Multicultural Room from 13 to 17 October 2014.

It was a fantastic week and it was great to see so many residents attend the event!

The inaugural Safety Awareness Week was a new initiative to ensure that all members of the CDU community – staff, students, partner organisations and visitors – receive the information, resources and training they need to stay safe and build personal resilience.

Everyone who participated in the week or sent in a safety/security/emergency suggestion was given a ticket into the draw for prizes. As there were so many participants the organisers added a few extra prizes,10 to be exact!

IHD was very excited to see the winners include IHD residents and staff:

• 5th prize: Matile Phillips receivedfire extinguisher, firstaid kit and emergency charger

• 7th prize: Kim Jennings, David Ompong, andIsadoraMackreceivedfirstaidkit

• 8th Prize John Kasi received emergency charger

For those who have not yet received their prize, they can be collected from Blue 1.1.46.

Congratulations to all the winners and thank you again for supporting Safety Awareness Week.

NOTICES

IHD Casuarina Shuttle Bus Operating

Throughout November!

To help you with your shopping, IHD runs a FREE shuttle service to Casuarina Square Shopping Centre every Friday during semester.

This year, we have decided to extend this service throughout November too!

The shuttle bus departs from IHD Reception. The drop off/return pickup is from the same point at your destination.Details: • IHD to and from Casuarina Square • Every Friday night • 30 minute loop (approximately) • First bus leaves IHD @ 5.30pm • Last bus leaves Casuarina @ 9pm.

Building Closures During Summer Semester

IHD is installing 13 new kitchens in existing IHD buildings over the summer semester. Due to these upgrades the following buildings will be closed over the summer break: • Buildings 1, 2, 4, 5• Houses 7, 8, 9, 10

Building 11 will have rotating partial closures for necessary maintenance, so will be used for short term stays only over summer.

Residents of the above buildings wishing to extend their stay past 10 November 2014 will be relocated to an available room by IHD management. We will allocate the limited number of cheaper/standard rooms on a “first come, first served” basis.

Personal Safety and Prevention of Theft

Make sure doors to your room, kitchen, bathroom, and other common room doors are always securely closed. These doors have been designed as self-locking for your personal safety and to help prevent theft.

It is important to note that IHD and the University are not responsible for any damage or loss caused to items located on the premises; therefore, residents are encouraged to take out appropriate insurance. You are advised to check that the contents policy you are purchasing is valid for a residential accommodation setting. It may also be wise to have engraved identification on expensive electrical items.

Quiet Time DuringStudy Week and Exams

As exams are now upon us, please be considerate of those studying at different times to you.

We will again have our usual Quiet Time during study week and the exam period. Quiet Time means IHD will not tolerate noise at any time of the day or night; this is to allow residents to study in peace.

Fines of $149 will be issued to offenders.

Be respectful of others.
