The rippling silver structure that sits atop Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles is a sight impossible to ig-

nore. The Walt Disney Concert Hall quite literally shines. In the midst of the city’s tallest skyscrapers, the hall’s undu-lating plates of refl ective stainless steel vividly contrast the urban landscape with what is easily the city’s most distinc-tive piece of architecture.

The swooping design required more than 30,000 architectural drawings to complete and is comprised of 12,500 pieces of steel held together by 300 tons of bolts and welds. And while the distinguished venue only opened its doors to the public in 2003, the project fi rst began in 1987 with an initial $50 million donation from Walt Disney’s wid-ow, Lillian Disney, for a concert hall built in her husband’s memory. The sleek structure is widely regarded as the crowning achievement of internationally acclaimed architect Frank Gehry, winner of the architectural world’s equivalent to the Pulitzer Prize, the Pritzker. Gehry called his futuristic design “a rose for the city.” It’s a thought also echoed in a mosaic rose memorial fountain designed by Gehry later dedicated to Lillian herself in the theater courtyard called “A Rose for Lilly.”

The 2,265 seat venue is home to both the Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestra and the Los Angeles Master Chorale, but serves as a theater for all musical purposes, as I discovered in a recent trip to a Ryan Adams concert. I was skeptical at the prospect of rock ‘n’ roll in an orchestra space, but my doubt lasted only seconds into the fi rst song. The Walt Disney Concert Hall was built for acoustic preci-sion – musical notes are magnifi ed and the strum of a single chord is remarkably clear. Elements of the building’s exte-rior are translated into the theater’s interior, as music travels across the rippled wood inside, creating a sound as beautiful as the building’s design. Even from my seats behind stage, I felt as though I was sitting on stage.

Though special event concert ticket prices vary, students are eligible to purchase extra tickets priced at $10 and $20 up to two hours before select Los Angeles Philhar-monic concerts. And even for those who may miss out on tickets, the hall’s accessible downtown location is in easy walking distance from other historical Downtown Los An-geles landmarks and, even more importantly, delicious food.

I parked a couple blocks away, near Bradbury Building, the downtown architectural wonder, as well as the Central Mar-ket, which is home to about every ethnic food variety in the city of Los Angeles. The market has been around since 1917 and is also home to the most fi lling two-for-$5 carne asada tacos in the city. Take my word for it. Downtown’s Walt Disney Concert Hall is well worth a visit – even if only to marvel at the architecture while en route to lunch or other downtown excursions.

I n 1987, the Shulman House was designated a Cul-tural Heritage Monument by the city of Los Ange-les. In 2000 Julius Shulman gave up retirement to

begin working with business partner Juergen Nogai. The Getty Research Institute held a 2005–2006 exhibi-tion of Shulman’s prints entitled “Julius Shulman, Mo-dernity and the Metropolis”. The exhibition included sections entitled “Framing the California Lifestyle,” “Promoting the Power of Modern Architecture,” “The Tools of an Innovator” and “The Development of a Metropolis”. The exhibition traveled to the National Building Museum and to the Art Institute of Chicago. Julius Shulman and Juergen Nogai have had exhibitions at the Design and Architecture Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, in fall 2005 as well as an exhibi-tion at the Barnsdall Municipal Gallery in Los Ange-les 2006, Craig Krull Gallery Bergamot station, Los Angeles, October 2007, and another show in spring 2009. An exhibition of their work is also scheduled in Mannheim, Germany, in 2010.On Dec. 16, 2007, Shulman attended a showing of his architectural photography at the Los Angeles Public Library.[6] Organized by the Getty Research Institute, the exhibit included 150 photographs documenting architectural changes in Los Angeles over the past 80 years. This progression includes the redevelop-ment of Bunker Hill, the growth of Century City, the avant-garde architectural designs in Los Angeles such as Watts Towers, Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the Getty Villa, as well as the growth of Wilshire Boule-vard. The exhibition features the industrial engines at the Port of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Interna-tional Airport that helped fuel the growth of Los Ange-les. Also featured, diverse residential fabric from Echo Park to South Los Angeles. The exhibit spotlighted Shulman’s unique role in capturing and promoting innovative, sleek case study houses as well as the contrasting tract housing developments with repeated floor plans. In February 2008, the Palm Springs Art Mu-seum presented “Julius Shulman: Palm Springs,” guest curated by Michael Stern. Containing more than 200 objects, it is the largest Julius Shulman exhibition ever presented to date. In addition to photographs and renderings, illustrations and models of many of the buildings Shulman photographed were presented to

complement his extensive documentation of a place that was so inspirational to him. Rizzoli published the accompanying cata-log, “Julius Shulman: Palm Springs.” Addi-tionally, a documentary DVD was produced in conjunction with the exhibition “Julius Shulman: Desert Modern.”Selected Shulman works were included in the Annenberg Space for Photography’s in-augural exhibit, L8S ANG3LES. One of his last commissioned works was of the Space, which opened in March, 2009, with Shul-man in attendance.

Shulman’s last exhibit at Craig Krull Gallery was scheduled for July 4 to August 8, 2009, but Shulman’s death one week into the show caused it to be extend-ed by two weeks. Shulman’s daughter Judy

Shulman McKee—along with Krull, Nogai, Benedikt Taschen and Wim de Wit—spoke at the Getty Center on Sunday, September 20, 2009 during a memorial to celebrate the life of Julius Shulman. Craig Krull Gallery has been Shulman’s exclusive gal-lery representation since 1991 and will be opening a major survey of Shulman’s work in September 2011.

Shulman was the subject of a 2008 documentary film, Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman. The film, directed by Eric Bricker and narrated by Dustin Hoffman, explores Shulman’s life and work. It discusses how Shulman’s im-ages helped to shape the careers of influ-ential 20th century architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra and

John Lautner. The film won the 2009 Palm Springs International Film Festival Audi-ence Award for Best Documentary Feature as well as awards at the Austin Film Festi-val, Newport Beach Film Festival and the Lone Star International Film Festival. The film was released theatrically by Arthouse Films across the U.S. late 2009 through early 2010.

Shulman had a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars dedicated to him in 2006. He died at his home in Los Angeles, California on Wednesday, July 15, 2009; he was 98 years old.

KOFI

When you fi rst view Augustine Kofi e’s artwork you im-mediately are struck with the skill and intensity of his technique. You can understand his love of process and structure. With strong interest in architecture, form and shape of typography, 1960’s iconography, contemporary music and street culture, Augus-tine constructs a dialogue in his work that is not always easily revealed. His collages and assemblages are layers upon layers of development. His work is as much unintentional mastery as it is intentional order. The imagery not only leaps out at you, but also draws you into his conversation. Growing up in Los Angeles and very active in the West Los Angeles Graffi ti scene since the mid 1990’s, Kofi e’One, as he became to be known, is a skillful and well respected street artist. After viewing one of his paintings and assemblages you may begin to recognize his distinct style in one of his many murals scattered around Los Angeles. Drawing on his craft of lettering he has developed an abstraction that goes beyond the traditional 3 dimensions of our known world into a crafted world that builds on itself. Choices like his color pallet recall a vintage sensibility. He has the innate ability to combine appreciation of the past and his vision of a developed future.Kofi e’s mechanically detailed line-work, organically complex structures and heavy earth-tone palette develop into a multi-layered, architecturally inspired world that is a vintage futuristic realm not subject to gravity.

Villa Plus is built on a seaside plot with spectacular views of the ocean, at the border between rocks and the open sea. Nature is char-acterized by the sky and sea dramatic shifts, sunlight refl ecting in the sea and strong winds sweeping through the Baltic Sea.The volume creates a strong contrast with the natural surroundings. The house lands like a ship on the shore, forming a clear pragmatic structure on the untouched nature. The building is located in a low level and closer to the shore than it is usual, which makes the design a specifi c challenge. There can be waves sweeping far beyond the shoreline. Due to this fact, the house is beared by a system of columns, allowing the waves to sim-ply pass under the house. The customer had a desire to capture the surroundings and the sea and create a place with spaces for social life as well as contempla-tion and calm . The house faces openly the sea and turns its back to the city life. Although being a summer house it offers the same comfort as a permanent dwelling, but life here is a reminder of the distance to the city and the calm surroundings. The design is contemporary and the construction method is simple and rational. The place is very diffi cult and some days during the construction period it was not possible to reach it depending on the sea and the wind. Material choices are made to create an affi nity with the environment. All bearing walls are covered with untreated pine panels on both sides. Since the site is extremely exposed to wind and water the choice of materials was limited to those which could withstand the effects of weather and age beautifully. Over time, the boards will become silverish and blend in with the pine forest around. By allowing the untreated pine panel to breathe and age naturally, we got a completely maintenance free facade. The building entrance is located in an axis that connects to a trail that follows down to the jetty. The ground fl oor houses along its long side a spacious living room with a fi replace, kitchen, bathroom and three bedrooms. The upper fl oor is accessed via a narrow staircase, and consists of a studio overlooking the ocean. The border between indoors and outdoors is blured by using the same materiality. Openings in the walls and atriums with sheltered terraces divide the volume of the building in spacious areas and intimate passages. These contrasts generates movement between the rooms. Glazed walls create a connection between the sea at the southeastern side and the sheltered northwest side, and bring in the feeling of nature.

This rustic pine house designed by Sweden architects Walde-marson Berglund was built with the environment in mind - made using local materials and fashioned in such a way as to blend with the natural surroundings, but with a distinctly modern twist. The rough-cut wood cladding on the exterior will naturally go grey with age, complementing the surrounding stone, trees and water. A glass wall opens the linear main fl oor onto nature, maximizing the waterfront views and abundance of natural light fl ooding in. This Swedish villa is crowned by a roof top loft, fronted with glass and overlooking the sea. Underfoot, to avoid fl ood-ing by the nearby water, this seafront house was raised on stilts to let the water rush beneath it as it pleases. This summer house offers views of the sea from every angle. The building settles on the boarderland between rocks, grass and water. The load-bearing walls are built from hand-picked panels of Swedish pine, cut to a rough surface.
