858. OLD Lj\UI, much harder than usual of this series, tho there a:re a few rotted clinkery spots

892. No. 3 SANDWICH, clinkery and red on tOIl, but grading into a hard rock at about 876 - some slickensides

980. OLD 1.::AUI, first 3 ft. soft to soft and sticky, a slight leak is sugl;ested here as water measurement shows a level of 249.5, which level had l)reviuusly stood at 176.4 with hole at depth of 865. 1" cavity and small leale at 914. 3ft cavity and snall leal\: at 911 4" cavity in soft formation at 917 but no leak

991.3 No 4 SANmVICH, hard, inclined to cave, probably clinkery, cores only 6" in 11 ft. of drilling.

Before drilling was resumed, measurement with electrical device showed water to stand at 174.2 in lit pipe which rested on bottom at 804 ft. being perforated at bottom. Borings in hole at 816; Borings in hole at 821.7 - Unsuccessful attempt to siphon out borings at 826.9 - Same at 831.3 - Same at 845. With hole at 865, rods to bOttOffl of hole with diamond bit on, water stood at 176.4 - on April 3rd. Borings successfully siphoned out at 890. With hole at 900, rods to bottom of hole with diamond bit on, water stood at 249.5 - on April 8th. ~1ith hole at depth of 934.6 rods to bottom of hole with diamond bit on water stood at 475 - on April 8th. WIth hole at 951 rods to bottOE of hole V'Iith diamond bit on, water stood at 424.1 - Anril 12th. It is suspecte~ that borjngs had filled small lealcs and raised this level. -Small leak at 980 - Small leak at 986 With hole at depth of 991.3 one inch Dipe was placed in hole, having a 611 perforated section on bottom end (6 3/8" holes) pipe resting on bottom - Vlater stood at --665.9 In attempting to fill hole with iron filings, pipe was clogged, making it necessary to withdraw it. In returning pipe to hole, a hard bridge was encountered at 798 which could not be dislodged with pipe. A 3/8" rod 3 ft long was dropped into pipe to dislodge a rock which had become wedeed in end, after whicp. filings were placed in hole filling it to 790.5 on which the pipe was brought to rest, the top being 2 ft above the top of casing which had'been the previous point of measurements. Water then stood at 175 - from top of pipe or 173 from old point of measurement at top of casing. The filings were tamped in hole, a little salt and humus being added from time to time as filings were placed in.

character, leaky Gravelly soil, or rotted aa. Lenky Hard N.D.S. basalt Smooth gray clay or fine smooth ~iO:i 1 Same as above but with occasional 1um:rs N.D.S.rocl Hard N.D.S. basalt Compact red gritty soil. No leak here Partly rotted soft brown basalt Hard blue NoD.S. basalt Firm gray soil VlILD TURKEY Gray soil, not compact VlILD 'l'URKEY.· Widely variable in apL)earance and

hardness, with many soft spots comparable to soil in firmness, at 222.5 a soft spot about 2" thick which could be a soil. This V"lILD 'lURKEY shows fewer crystals as depth increases and may continue beyond 222.0 an there are a few small crystals below this depth.

Hard N.D.S. basalt with occasional rotted clinke~ spots.

Same as above but with more frequent soft spots Same but with more frequent and larger soft spots Same but greater proportion of hard rock Rotted clinker with occasional hard nodules Hard N.D.S. basalt Partly rotted black basalt with frequent soft

clay-like spots. Becomes sOLl.evJha t harder and less weathered with depth. Shows a clinkery tendency in upper portion but last Dortion grades into a hard to ver'Jr hard rock

Very compact red and brown gri ttJr soil. 11 slight leak was suspected here because of the behavio: of the borings, but it was later decided that there was no leak

Hard N.D.S. basalt with frequent softer clinkery spots grading into a more uniform hard blue basalt at about 471 ana. again becoming less uniform and generally softer at about 487. Caves ra ther badly from 487 to ~514, below which it again becomes harder.

OLD lVlAUI. The forma tion on both u~)per and lower side of contact rather soft and rotted, but no soil. So far as could be determined, no leak.

OLD lViliUI SANDWICH. Hard and slightly clinlcery, grading into a more uniform hard rock, but wit soft spots which are too soft to core. Suspected to be leaky, as the borings wash out but no change in water level of hole.

OLD MAUI, having more and larger crystals of augite, olivene and feldspars; suspected to be leaky, or to have a water movement because of the way the borings clear up between 668 & 673, a series of cavities with only an occasional thin bridge of hard rock between. Caving area about 695. Borings do not clear up between 701, 723 & 737 9 Hard rock between 737.9 & 744. • •

TEST TO DETERMINE STATIC HEAD WIth 712 ft of'one inch pipe placed in hole, the bottom 3 lengths, of 60 ft beine perforated with 3/8" holes at intervals of ahout 2" drilled through both sides. To this, was screwed 652 ft of pipe with no perforations, the entire length being suspended from surface. This operation was completed in the afternoon of Feb. 5, and a baler was lowered into hole to a depth of 172.7 and filled and baled out several times. On the morning of Feb. 6 an electrical device was lowered into hole which established the water level at 172.7, the hole at time being 750 ft deep, and the normal water level in the hole being 104 ft.
