Why is illegal drug use dangerous?

dangerous /permanent damage to brain and body

become addicted major factor in suicide,

accidents and crimes risk of spreading disease

through sharing needles can result in overdose drug use leads to making

irresponsible decisions

Page 3: ILLEGAL DRUGS

The reasons people begin using drugs are similar to the reasons they begin to drink or smoke. What are these reasons?

Desire to experiment Desire to escape depression /

boredom Enjoyment of risky behavior

Belief that drugs solve personal problems Peer pressureMedia glamorizing drug use

Page 4: ILLEGAL DRUGS

While there are many different illegal drugs, all illegal drugs

have 3 things in common.

What are these 3 things? Affects function of

the brain Dangerous to

health Result in drug

dependence and addiction

Page 5: ILLEGAL DRUGS
Page 6: ILLEGAL DRUGS

Marijuana is a word used to describe the dried flowers, seeds,

and leaves of the Indian hemp plant.

Hashish is a related form of

the drug, made from resins

of the Indian hemp plant.

Cannabis describes any of the

different drugs that come from

Indian hemp, including marijuana

and hashish.

Regardless of the name, this drug is an hallucinogen – a substance which distorts how the mind perceives the

world you live in.

The chemical in

cannabis that creates

this distortion is known

as THC.

The cannabis plant, from which marijuana is derived, has over

400 different chemicals.

EFFECTS OF MARIJUANASHORT TERM LONG TERM Sensory distortion Panic Anxiety Poor coordination of

movement Lowered reaction time After an initial “up,”

the user feels sleepy or depressed

Increased heartbeat (and risk of heart attack)

Reduced resistance to common illnesses ( cold, bronchitis)

Growth disorders Increase of abnormally

structured cells in the body Reduction of male sex

hormones Rapid destruction of lung

fibers and lesions to the brain could be permanent

Reduced sexual capacity Apathy, drowsiness, lack of

motivation Personality and mood

changes Inability to understand

things clearly

Page 8: ILLEGAL DRUGS

What are some of the effects marijuana

has on the body?Slowed thinking,

difficult paying attention, no sense of time or distance,

loss of short term memory,

shrinks your brain

Page 9: ILLEGAL DRUGS

Can you become dependant on marijuana?

Yes, you can

build a tolerance

and a dependenc

e to it.

Page 10: ILLEGAL DRUGS

Yes, much like how alcohol affects your

driving.

Can marijuana use affect your driving? If so, how?

It can slow your reaction time and impair your

judgment.

Marijuana and School

One of the prevalent effects of marijuana is the decline in school

performance.

Marijuana and school don’t mix. Marijuana makes it

harder for users to concentrate, and slows

thinking down. Marijuana damages the user’s memory and

things such as simple math problems become

extremely difficult.

What are inhalants? What are 2 legal inhalants used by physicians?Drugs that are inhaled as vapors such as

Laughing Gas Asthma Inhaler

Page 16: ILLEGAL DRUGS

Inhalants refers to the vapors from

toxic substances which are inhaled

to reach a quick high

There are more

than 1,000

household

products that

could be used as

inhalants

Produce effects similar to anesthetics, which slow

down the body’s functions The user experiences an initial high and loss of inhibitions, then drowsiness, lightheadedness, and agitation

The chemicals are quickly absorbed through the

lungs into the bloodstream and quickly reach the brain and other

organs

Because they reach the brain with a faster speed and force than other substances, they

can cause irreversible physical and mental

damages.

SNIFFINGUsers may inhale the chemical

vapors directly from open containers

HUFFING

Breathing the fumes

from rags soaked in a

chemical substances

Page 17: ILLEGAL DRUGS

What type of effects might you experience

from inhalants?Hyperactivity, loss of inhibitions,

dizziness, loss of coordination,

difficulty speaking and thinking, fear,

anxiety, depression

ECSTASYWHAT IS

IT?Ecstasy is a synthetic, psychoactive drug that is chemically similar to the

stimulant methamphetamine and the hallucinogen mescaline.

Ecstasy (MDMA) produces feelings of increased energy, euphoria, emotional warmth,

and distortions in time, perception, and tactile

experiences

Highly Highly addictive, addictive, illegal drugillegal drug

Heroin (like opium and

morphine) is made from the

resin of poppy plants.

Milky, sap-like opium is first removed from the pod of the poppy flower. This opium is refined to make morphine, then further refined into different forms of heroin.

Most heroin is injected, creating additional risks for the user, who faces the danger of AIDS or

other infections on top of the pain of addiction.

WHAT IS

WHAT IS IT?IT?LSD is one of the most potent,

mood changing chemicals. It is manufactured from lysergic acid, which is found in the ergot fungus

that grows on rye and other grains.

Produced in crystal

form in illegal

laboratories mainly in

the US. These

crystals are converted

to a liquid for

distribution. OdorlessColorless

Slightly Bitter Taste

KNOWN AS

ACIDACID

Sold on the street as:• small tablets

• capsules •gelatin squares

•Liquid

•It is sometimes added to absorbent paper,

which is then divided into small squares

decorated with designs or cartoon characters

(“loony tunes”)

No matter what form it comes in, LSD leads

the user to a same place, a serious disconnect from

reality

LSD users call an LSD experience a

“trip,” usually lasting 12

hours or so. When things go wrong, which

often happens, it is called a “bad trip,” another

name for a living nightmare!

WHAT IS COCAINE?WHAT IS COCAINE? The word cocaine refers to the

drug in a powder or crystal form.

The powder form is usually mixed with corn starch, talcum, powder, sugar or any other drugs such as procaine (a local anesthetic) or amphetamines

Extracted from cocoa leaves

Cocaine was originally developed as a painkiller

Cocaine is most often sniffed with the powder absorbed into the bloodstream through the nasal tissues.

It can also be ingested or rubbed into the gums

To more rapidly absorb the drug into the body, abusers inject it, but this substantially increases the risk of overdose.

Page 37: ILLEGAL DRUGS

A Deadly White Powder Cocaine is one of the deadliest

drugs known to man.

Once a person begins taking cocaine, it has proven almost impossible to become free of its grip physically or mentally

Physically it stimulates key receptors (nerve endings that sense change in the body) within the brain that, in turn, create a euphoria to which users quickly develop a tolerance.

Tactile hallucinations that creates the illusion of bugs burrowing under the skin

Intense euphoria Anxiety and paranoia Intense drug craving Panic and psychosis Convulsions, seizures,

and sudden death from high doses (even one time)

Crystal form of cocaine

Comes in solid blocks or

crystals Varies in color from pale

rose to white Crack is heated and smoked

It is so named because it

makes a cracking or popping sound when heated

The most potent form in which cocaine appears

Also the riskiest Between 75%-100% Pure

(far stronger and more potent than regular cocaine)

Smoking crack allows it to reach the brain

more quickly and thus brings an

intense and immediate – but very short lived-

high that last about 15 minutes.

Considered a “rich man’s

drug”
