Carolinita, by Jose' Maria Lopez Mfezquita, is one of a collection of paintings by contemporary Spanish artists which was assembled in Madrid by Miss Ethel L. Coe and brought to this country under the auspices of the Art Institute of Chicago last spring. The col lection was first shown in the Art Institute, Chicago; later it was exhibited in the Hackley Art Gallery of

Muskegon, Michigan. In January it will be displayed in the Art Museum of Detroit. Miss Coe, in assem bling the collection, had the assistance and co-opera tion of not only Sorolla, but of Sefior Don Manuel B. Cossio, Sefior Don Jose Castillejo y Duarte, and Seflor Don Jose Garnelo y Alda. The collection is made up with a single exception of works by living artists and fairly represents the trend of present tendencies. Mezquita, the painter of Carolinita, be longs to the youngest group, chronologically, which shows the influence both of Sorolla and Zuloaga. He was born in Granada in 1883 and studied in the Madrid School of Fine Arts and in Paris. When he was eighteen he was awarded a first medal at the Madrid Exhibition for realistic work. Other medals and honors have since followed. He paints not only figures, but landscapes, and stands high in the es teem of his confreres as well as contemporary critics.
