Dining-Room Interior, Showing Sideboard. By J. P. Small.
Dainty, pure classical motif, and simplicity of line. These are characteristic features of the above sketch, and in fact are strong features in all of Mr. Small's work. Although ornament is freely used, it is used justly. No over-crowded and meaningless
effect; no attempt at decoration for display only, but a fitting and successful endeavor to enrich without detri ment to construction. Although the designs are not absolutely pure in style, it is a happy blending
of Colonial forms with the rich Byzantine ornament, and in these days of modern advancement such methods are commendable?of course when
successful, as this design unquestionably is.
