Avery Weigh- Tronix Technical Specification IM Series

    Overview

    General Description

The IM series provides a range

of counter scales to cover the

    different requirements of fresh

    food counters, self-service,

pre-pack areas and point of sale

    areas for supermarkets and

    speciality stores.

    These terminals may be used

    in stand-alone mode or linked

    together to form networks.

    In addition, the different

    departments can be linked

    together and connected to a

    back office computer, to form

    store-wide, centrally managed

    networks.

The scales can operate in a

number of different modes, printing individual labels for

    each item or combining the

    shoppers items together and

    printing a single receipt.

    Hardware

    Processor/Memory

All IM series scales use an ARM,

    32-bit processor.

    All user-programmable data

    is stored in reprogrammable

    Flash memory. The number of

    PLUs supported is dependant

on the average text size, number

    of totals used etc. Typically,

    there will be sufficient memory

    for at least 6000 PLUs

    The following table clearly lists

the average text size in relation

to the number of PLUs available.

    The table shows PLU capacity

with two totals types per PLU

and eight totals types per PLU,

    according to different average

text size. Up to 12 totals types

could be stored per PLU (sales,

    counter, pre-pack, override,

    return and promotions). Each

total type can be stored across

    two reporting periods.

    Other factors which affect PLU

    memory size include:

    Receipt memory

    Transaction per receipt memory

    Diagnostic log size

    Traceability record memory

    Traceability totals memory

    There is an additional, separate

flash memory which is used for

    the application software and

factory default data. This ensuresPLU memory capacity remains

    unaffected by software updates.

    Displays

    All IM series customer and

    vendor displays are blue LED

    backlit, LCD dot-matrix 192 x

    64dot resolution displays.

The top left-hand corner of the

    display is reserved to display

    the model number. Metrological

data is displayed in the box next

    to this.

    Different character sets can be

    supported for various countries,

    including Latin, Greek, Cyrillic

    and Arabic.

    Displays can be adjusted for

    different lighting and viewing

    angles, via a contrast adjustment

    in management mode.

    Display annunciators emphasise

    the current mode of operation,

    including: fix/pre-pack, net/tare,

    price base and zero. These

    modes are dependant on

    the market.

The unit price field allows up

to four digits before a thousand

    separator is displayed.

    Printers

The IM series printer is a heavy

    duty label and receipt printer,

with a single motor driving both

the paper feed and paper rewindsystems. Receipt tally roll, die

    cut labels or continuous sticky

    paper can be used.

The paper roll is loaded onto

    the spindle and the paper

    passed through the large

aperture at the rear of the open

    print mechanism. The single

    large aperture through which the

paper is fed at the rear of the

    print mechanism means paper

changes are quick and simpleand makes it virtually impossible

to feed the paper through the

    printer incorrectly.

To ensure the print head can be

easily cleaned, the print head is

raised well clear of the lower

body when in the open position

    ensuring good access. This easy

    maintenance feature encourages

cleaning to be carried out and the

life of the print head optimised.

    The printer also auto-rewinds

    before printin commences,

    ensuring a minimum of dead

space on the label or receipt.

    Keyboards

    The IM series keyboards fitted

    to the scale are hard-wearing,

    touch sensitive, wipe clean

    keyboards with raised pre-

    programmed and digit keys.

The raised keys give a near

tactile feel when used and give

    the operator feedback that their

    finger is located correctly on

    the key.

    The IM series keyboard is

available in two options, a 66

key variant for all versions where

    the display and keyboard are

    mounted together, and an 84

key variant for the IM 202 head

    up display version.

    The raised section of the

keyboard has a number of pre-

    programmed functions assigned

to it (eg: 0-9, Clear, Test, Enter,

Total / Print, Add, Tare, etc).

    Each variant also has a

    user-programmable area of 42

    (IM100, 300, 400, 500) and 60

    (IM202) keys.

    The user programmable areas

comprise of hard-wearing, tear-resistant transparent pockets

    under which a user-defined

insert may be slotted into place.

    Four tough, flexible plastic

    inserts are supplied with the

scale. They can be written on

    with a non-permanent felt

marker which can be erased if a

    change to the user-programmed

key is made in the future. The

    reverse side of the insert

    contains all keys required when

    programming the scale.

    Latin, Greek, Cyrillic and Arabic

    character sets are delivered,

one on each insert. The insert

is retained at the lower edge

by two ridges in the plastic

    moulding.

    Self-service keyboards for

    IM 300

The IM 300 is delivered with an

    80 key self-service keyboard.

This is mounted on a metal

    baseplate that sits beneath the

    scale. An optional second

    keyboard can also be ordered

providing a total of 160 keys.

    This mounts to the same

    baseplate.

    The keyboard itself consists

of full travel keys, with a

    transparent keyboard pocket

    that accepts a keyboard insert.

Keys may be grouped in any

    combination of fours, twos or

    singles, providing full flexibility

    for larger keys where required.

    Weighing Capacities

The IM series scales areavailable in the following

    standard capacities :

    For IM 100, 202, 300, 400:

    30 lb x 0.01 lb

    50 lb x 0.01 lb

    6 kg AVR

    12 kg x 2 g

    15 kg AVR

    30 kg x 5 g

    For IM 500 hanging scale:

    15 kg x 5 g

    30 lb x 0.01lb

    Power Supply

The IM scale has an external

    plug-mounted power supply

    rated at 100V/60Hz to

    240V/50Hz. This connects to

the underside of the scale. The

cable can be held in a clip at the

rear of the underside to providestrain relief on the DC connector.

The use of the external power

supply makes the scale a low

    voltage device, and reduces

    power consumption.

    All variants are supplied with

    interchangeable plug heads to

suit the vast majority of socket

    types worldwide. Additionally,

the plug head can be removed

and a flying lead attached to theIEC C7 power connection of the

power supply. This is useful if

the power cable is of insufficient

    length or there is insufficient

space at the power socket for

    the power supply.

    Scale Interfaces

    USB Ports

All models feature two USBports, with USB V.1.1 being

    supported. On IM 100, 202, 300

and 400 models, one port is

    located beneath the scale, one

    is located in the printer

    compartment. Typically, the port

    located beneath the scale may

    be used for scanner input.

The port located in the printer

    compartment is typically used

for data transfer with a USB

    memory stick.

On the IM500 one USB port

    is located beneath the

    connector/WiFi cowl on the

top of the machine and one

    is located beneath the

connector/WiFi cowl on theoperator side of the machine.

    Cash Drawer Interface

    All models feature an RJ12

connector for use with a 12

    or 24V cash drawer.

    Inter-scale Network

    and Host Computer

    Interfaces

A maximum of 10 scales may

be linked together in a single

    network.

    All communications are based

    on standard 10/100-BaseT

    Ethernet networking. Ethernet

    cabling standard IEEE802.3

    defines cable type, length and

    equipment.

    TCP/IP is the language or

    protocol, by which all devices

    communicate.

    Within a single network, scales

    are configured in a Client/Server

    configuration, with all scales

    sharing the same Ethernet port

    address.

Any scale can be configured as

the Server and all scales contain

the full PLU and data file.

    As all scales are connected

    directly into an Ethernet hub,

    no wiring short-circuit can bring

    down the scale network, adding

    significantly to network

    resilience.

    Each scale may even be

    connected to a local

    Department HUB. Where

    connection to the office

    computer is required, each HUB

may then be connected to thestores Ethernet HUB in the

    wiring closet.

    This HUB provides the

    connection to the back-store

    management PC via Ethernet

    cabling.

    Alternatively, full Category 5

    structured cabling may be

    employed, with every scale

being directly connected toa single hub system within

    the store.

    A back-up server, providing

    automatic server switching and

    subsequent automated recovery

    of the network, off line-sales

    and synchronisation of PLU

files, should the main server go

    down, can be assigned. Full

    ethernet connection via

    gateways and subnet is

    supported.

    Within a single store-wide

    Ethernet system, multiple scale

    networks can be configured,

with each having a unique port

    address.

In this scenario more than a

    hundred IM series scales can

    linked into the stores Ethernet

    hub, with each Server talking

independently to its ownnetwork of client scales.

The IM series range also allows

host names to be specified for

a particular scale for use in

    conjunction with DHCP and

DNS. The host name to be

programmed can be up to 100

    characters.

    The TCP/IP protocol enables

simple remote diagnostic toolsfrom head office, such as the

    Ping feature.

    RF Communications

    IM series scales are compatible

    with most common Spread

    Spectrum Radio Frequencysystems.

This enables the use of RF for

    communication between the

    PC located in the management

    office and the counter scales

    in the store.

    Multiple network configurations

    are possible using either only

RF or combinations of RF and

    direct cabling communications.

For further information, see theIM series RF Communications

    Data specification sheet.

    System Resilience

    and Networking

In both LAN and RF networks,

    the back-up server mirrors the

    main server and automatically

takes control if the main serverfails. When the communication

    with the server is restored,

    transactions are automatically

    recollected from local mode and

    the totals are regenerated.

    Configurable Network Error

    Alarm An audible alarm warning

    of network errors can be

    disabled in sales mode.

    A flashing message appears

    on the vendor display when

    the scale is experiencing

    communication problems.

    Software

    This section defines version 7

    software operation of the IM

    series system scales.

    Operating Modes

    Label Mode

    IM series scales operating in

    label mode are generally used

    for single item, weighed or

    non-weighed transactions.

In label mode, the system can

be set to Print on Request

    (press the Print or Operator

    keys) or Immediate (as soon

    as the weight is steady).

    Self-Service Mode

IM series scales can be set into

    self-service mode where they

    are intended for the general

public to weigh and label their

    own produce. When in self-

    service mode, IM series scales

    prompt the customer to select

item from the keyboard, beforeplacing the produce on the scale

and pressing the print key to

    print the label.

By setting the scale to print

    immediate, the label can

    automatically be issued after the

produce is on the scale, without

having to press the print key.

    Pre-pack

Pre-pack mode enables anumber of consecutive labels to

    be printed for each selected

    item. For this reason, the

selected item - along with any

    tare details, are retained until

    cleared.

In general, an item is selected in

the standard way and the details

are automatically fixed - with a

label being printed each time the

    weight changes and then returns

    to a steady weight again.

To cancel that item, press the

clear key until the Enter PLU

    message is displayed.

    Direct entry to Pre-pack mode,

by pressing the Fix key, can beenabled in system configuration.

    Label Formats

Label formats can be pre-set for

a scale or may be set for each

    individual item.

Up to 12 label formats can be

    set up, with standard default

    formats being pre-set into each

    IM series on delivery. Every

label format can be modified inService mode, or using label

format editors in MX050 (the M

    series support tool) or MX4X0

    (retailer management package).

Up to 50 fields of information

can be printed on each label

    format.

Legends such as those for the

    current date, expiry date, price

per kg and total price values

    may be configured to print

    automatically.

    Sales messages may be set

against a PLU and printed on

    labels, within sales message

    fields.

Label lengths can be from 160

mm to as short as 40 mm and

may be printed in 0, 90 or 180

    orientation.

Printing can be set for individual

thermal labels or to print on

    continuous, sticky paper

    (enabling short and long labels

    to be printed for different

    products).

    Receipt Mode

    Receipt mode enables the

operator to float up and down

a counter from one scale to

another, producing one receiptfor the complete set of

    transactions.

Up to 20 operators may be live

on the network at any one time,

    with name and number printing

    on the receipts.

Each item in the scale isassigned to that operator and

    finally printed by pressing the

    Total key.

    Transaction details printed on

    the receipt include; store header

    details and optional logo,

operator details, date / time /

    terminal / receipt number,

    number of items, total value

    and any tax elements.

A barcode may be printed at

    the bottom of each receipt.

    This barcode can contain

    receipt-specific information

    such as total value, receipt

    number or customer number.

It can be scanned at the point

of sale in a system network to

    instantly recall transactions,

    thereby saving time and

    increasing customer throughput.

    Individual line details, including

    description, weight or quantity,

unit price and price to pay are

    also printed.

Single Item mode may be set

    up which automatically prints

a full receipt after each item

    transaction is completed.

    The void function enables the

complete sale or any individualline to be cancelled and the

    voided transactions are

    identified on receipt print outs.

    By including the Department

or Group in the receipt barcode,

sales may be limited to items

    from the same set only

    (department interlock feature).

    Sales/management functions

are protected via operator PINcodes to ensure that only

    authorised operators have

    access to those functions.

fixed price which is thenprinted on the label in addition

    to the original price. Customers

who are part of a stores

    frequent shopper program, are

    charged at the frequent shopper

price at the point of sale. The

    barcode printed on the label

    containing a frequent shopper

    promotional price will contain

    the original standard price.

When a PLU with a promotionis selected, the product

    description on the display

will flash to indicate this to

    the vendor.

    A promotional message advising

of the actual promotion can also

be set against each PLU for

    display and printing purposes.

    All of the above promotions

    except the frequent shopper

promotion can be used in label

    and receipt modes. Frequent

shopper can only be used in

    label mode.

    Nutritional Information

    Each PLU can be provided

    with nutritional information if

    required. A list of nutrients

    needs to be programmed first,

    against which, values are then

    programmed in the PLU

    records. Nutrient information

    can be programmed to print

    either on the same product

label, or on a separate label.

As well as being able to print

    individual nutrient values per

    product, the standard measure

(normally 100 g) values and RDA

    values can also be printed.

    Departments

You can create up to 10

    departments each having a 20

    character description.

All products are allocated to a

    specific department.

    Messages

Up to 99 scrolling or flashing

    messages may be programmed,

of up to 200 characters each.

You can assign each scale to

    display one of these messages.

Up to 20 sales messages may

    be programmed, and these can

be called-in to print on labels, where a field has been set up for

    this purpose.

    Tables

    The following data tables can

    be programmed.

    Tax

3 tax rates can be programmed,

with up to two tax rates being

    assigned to PLUs.

    Tares

Up to 10 tare weights can be

    programmed which can be

assigned to PLUs for use as

    preset tare values or assigned

to keys for recall in normal

    operating mode.

A tare interlock can be used to

ensure a label is only printed if a

    tare has been selected.

Tares may be configured as self-

    cancelling (one-shot) or fixed.

    Additionally, semi-self-

    cancelling, cumulative,

    accelerating or proportional

    tares may be programmed.

    Traceability

    IM series scales feature

    comprehensive options for

    all types of traceability

requirements. Up to threedifferent traceability schemes

    may be individually

    programmed, allowing

    associated products to be

    tracked through their supply

    chains. Scheme options include

    the ability to print user-defined

    trace information, manual or

    scannable methods of data

    input and the ability to

    reproduce traceability

    passports. All schemes can be

used in either label or receiptmodes, allowing counter or

    pre-pack service operation.

    Security Levels

    Programming Security Levels

    for Management Functions

    The system has 3 security

levels: 0 - no security up to

    2 - highest level.

Functions assigned to securitylevel of 0 will have no security

ie: they can be accessed by

    any user.

    Each operator can be given

    security level 0 - 3. Every

    exceptional sales function (e.g.

Void, Refund) can be set to

    require PIN authentication: level

    0 - 3. If set > 0 for a selected

    function, system prompts for

    the Operator number then the

    PIN code.

If the Operator security level is

greater or equal to the function

    level, the transaction will

    proceed, but, if the operator

security level is less than the

    function level, the scale prompts

    for a supervisor.

    All management functions

    operate on similar security

    levels.

    Security Levels for Operator

    Functions

    Operators are programmed with

    security levels between 0 - 3.

    Operators are allocated

personal PIN codes that theycan change on a regular basis,

via a PIN key which may be

    assigned to the keyboard.

    Programming Security Levels

    for Sales Functions

    Security levels of sales functions

are set up by scrolling through

    the sales functions in

    management mode and

    allocating them with security

levels 0 - 3. These functionsare initially set up with

    default levels.

    Security Log

The security log is a report

    which shows functions that

have been carried out above a

    user-entered security level. For

    example, a report printed for

    security level eight would print

    each level eight and nine

    function was carried out, with

the date, time and the name

    of the operator who performed

    the function.

    System Functions

    Audit Mode

Audit mode is either enabled or

    disabled in manager mode.

    Audit mode contains functions

    like filtering, server buffer, client

    buffer, Audit Report and erase

    Audit list.

    The filtering option allows the

    operator to select which printing

    modes transactions should be

    stored, i.e. Label only, Receipt

    only or Label and Receipt

    transactions.

    The server buffer is configurable

    to store receipt or label

    transactions in a linear

    or circular format.

Linear can only hold adetermined number of

    transactions and advises

    the operator when full.

    A circular buffer will

    continuously write over

transactions on a first in, first

    out basis when the memory

    becomes full.

    A transaction buffer size can

    be changed in Service mode,

    on installation.

    Receipt Weight Mode

    If required, the total weight

    of each receipts weighed

    transactions can be printed

at the bottom of the receipt.

    Last Subtotal

    When enabled, last subtotal

    allows operators to recall the

    value and number of

    transactions from the last receipt

    they transacted, to the display.

    Reprinting of the receipt is

    possible by pressing the Total

key. Note that this receipt is

    marked as a duplicate copy.

    Pre-Pack PLU Lock

    Dependent upon the setting

of the pre-pack PLU lock, in

    pre-pack mode, PLUs may need

to be cleared before a different

PLU can be called via thepre-set keyboard. If they are

required to be cleared, set as

enabled. If they are not to

    cleared, set as disabled.

    Security Log Level

    Any functions with a security

level equal to or higher than

    the value entered here, will

be printed in the security log.

Brief overview of the PCapplications available for

    support or retailer use.

    MX100

    MX100 has been specifically

    designed to provide a

    transparent interface between

    the retailers primary Store

    Management module (generally

the EPoS system), and themixture of scales in the various

    departments within the store.

MX100 is designed to run on the

    same computer as the

    management module, but in

    the background.

    This solution allows the retailer

    to control the prices and

product range in both the EPoS

and the scale systems from theHead Office.

    MX100 also provides for the

    collection and return of scale

    sales reports, as well as

    enabling a detailed audit

    trail of transactions.

    How does MX100 work

    - The MX100 is installed on

    the local store management

    system.

    - MX100 processes the

    incoming product change

    file and validates its integrity.

    - The validated file is

    communicated to the scales

    via the driver.

    MX400

    MX400 is a dedicated scale

    management system, providing

    functions not generally found in

    retail business management

    software (such as extended text

    editing and label design).

It provides a safe and securemethod of maintaining scale

    data and recovering trading

    information. Used for the
