AGGREGATES -- 2016

Test Method Revisions

Specification Revisions

ITM 223 – Hydraulic Fracture Test (HFT) 6/16/15

New ITM Designates procedures for testing Aggregates with the HFT Simulates the aggregate durability test (ITM 210) to classify AP aggregates

ITM 223 – Hydraulic Fracture Test (HFT) 6/16/15

ITM 223 – 8 days ITM 210 – 3.5 months Used to determine AP status of recycled concrete when added to new concrete Currently performing more testing to learn more about capabilities and relationship to AP values

ITM 224 – Flakiness Index of Aggregates 6/16/15

New ITM Designates flakiness index of aggregates Flakiness index is used to determine how cubical a particular aggregate is Cubical aggregates needed for effective chip seal applications

ITM 514 – Test Sections for Aggregates and Recycled Materials (6/16/15)

New ITM Embankment Construction Designates procedure for determining maximum allowable deflection with LWD Designates procedure for determining the roller type, pattern, and number of passes with a DCP

MSE Wall – Coefficient of Uniformity

“Cu = coefficient of uniformity defined as ratio of the particle size of soil that is 60 percent finer in size to the particle size of soil that is 10 percent finer in size” ≥ 4.0

MSE Wall – Coefficient of Uniformity

Was intended to be a design value, not a field value Removed from specifications RSP 731-B-298

Maximizing Use of Local Aggregates

SPR 3624 complete Small amount of highly polishing agg allowable due to differential wear 20% of coarse aggregate in HMA allowable RSP 904-R-626

Structural Backfill

RSP 211-R-625 Added notes for pH, organic content, permeability However, some changes were lost in translation – more tweaks are forthcoming to provide better clarity

Aggregate Bulk Specific Gravity HMA Mix Designs

• All values for HMA mix

design supplied by

INDOT

• List compiled from

current INDOT quality

sample data

• 5-year moving average

of quality samples,

where applicable

Aggregate Bulk Specific Gravity

• Values on list for 8s, 11s, and sands

• Other products:

Fineness Modulus ≥ 6.00 (use 8s)

3.50 < Fineness Modulus < 6.00 (use 11s)

Fineness Modulus ≤ 3.50 (use sand)

• Slags – Stockpiles may be set up by Producer

and INDOT will sample and test

Aggregate Bulk Specific Gravity

• Complete list published once per year

• New sources & new/missing ledges, benches,

etc. – INDOT will obtain samples and publish

new values

• New values will be compared to current value

• If significantly different, an investigation

will be started and additional samples

possibly taken

• List addendums will be published throughout

the year as needed
