This feast is such an important feast that the church does not abrogate the obligation to attend Mass on this feast day to the adjacent Sunday when it falls on a Monday as it does this year. Masses are being offered in Osakis at 9am (this is also a St. Agnes school Mass) and at 6:30pm in Belle River. This feast celebrates that Mary, chosen by God to be the future mother of his son Jesus, was given the gift of being conceived without sin (immaculately) in her own mother’s womb. Recently I was asked by a confirmation class how they could know which Eucharistic prayer would be used at Mass. There are four Eucharistic prayers that are included in the Missalettes. Any of these prayers can be used for any Mass so it is not possible to know which prayer will be used unless the priest announces which one will be used ahead of time. Which prayer is used is entirely up to the priest presider. There have been times when I planned to use one certain Eucharistic prayer before Mass begins, but change my mind during Mass, so even if a priest announces which Eucharistic prayer will be used does not mean he can’t change his mind. There are a number of other Eucharistic prayer options that the priest has available that are not included in the Missalette, which then are not able to be followed by those attending Mass unless copies are made available to them. There are three Eucharistic Prayers for Masses for Children. I use Prayer II for the St. Agnes School Mass, which is included in the Children’s Hymnal, so is able to be followed at these Masses. There are also two Eucharistic Prayers of Reconciliation and four Eucharistic Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions all of which are available for the priest presider to use at his choosing. I will generally use the Eucharistic Prayer III found in the Missalette for Sunday Masses, and Eucharistic Prayer II found in the Missalette for weekday Mass, but I can use any of the others if I feel it is appropriate. The priest is never supposed to modify the words of the Eucharistic Prayers, but that doesn’t mean you won’t occasionally notice strange words added. There are several feasts where sentences or phrases are added, as well as additions to wedding and funeral ceremonies such as the additional prayer for the deceased added to Eucharistic Prayer II during funerals. There are also bracketed words, phrases, and sentences in some of the Eucharistic Prayers that are optional and may be deleted. The Eucharistic Prayer actually begins with the Preface followed by the Holy, Holy, Holy. During the Eucharistic prayer our gifts of bread and wine are changed into Jesus’ body and blood that we are able to receive at communion. Some insist that the bread and wine become the body and blood at the words of institution, “this is my body” and “this is my blood,” (the point during the prayer when the bells are often rung) but I prefer the Eastern Rite understanding that it is bread and wine before the prayer begins and Jesus’ body and blood when we say (we usually sing) “Amen” at the conclusion of the prayer. Then there is no argument at which point during the prayer that the change takes place. Each of the four Eucharistic Prayers found in the Missalette are based on prayers originally used by the apostles that slowly developed within the communities that used them, but each contains a number of common elements that are too lengthy to include in this article. The newer optional Eucharistic Prayers all contain those basic elements. Bulletin deadline TUESDAY at 12:00 Noon

DECEMBER 7, 2014 :: SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

Father’s Findings

I want to remind everyone that tomorrow, December 8, is a holy day of obligation, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Bring a holiday treat to share for the party in the basement after the Mass. Also, a gift for the Baby Jesus Shower in support of Birthright will be gladly accepted and added to the cradle that evening! Thanks to those who also contributed items for the Holiday Bake Sale!
