TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Conduct affairs with humility (Sirach

3: 17-18, 20, 28-29)

Psalm — God, in your goodness, you have made a home

for the poor (Psalm 68)

Second Reading — You have approached the city of the

living God (Hebrews 12: 18-19, 22-24)

Gospel — Those who humble themselves will be exalted

(Luke 14: 1, 7-14)

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

The readings today center on mindfulness, awareness

of where we stand in God’s plan. The mountain of Sinai

carries a message of the majesty and distance of God,

while Jesus’ presence as host of the banquet speaks of

intimacy and mystery. September’s shadow calls us all to

mindfulness as we prepare to return to life outside of

summer. The Christian life holds these two places of

knowledge of God in careful balance. Even in the

accounts of the Passion we see the table of the upper room

in balance with the Mount of Olives.

Altar means “high place,” yet it is also a table. The

former liturgy of the Latin Rite began with the priest

bowing at the foot of the altar’s three steps, chanting

Introibo ad altare Dei, or “I will go to the altar of God,”

followed by the altar servers’ response, “the God who

gives joy to mu youth.” many parishioners can recall and

recite this scene by heart. As with so many things in

Liturgy, there are layers of meaning in our worship. The

altar table evokes memories of the high places once

reserved for encounter with the holy, and the intimacy of

the table where hospitality draws us to share food and

drink.

ESTATE PLANNING

We acknowledge the fact that some

members and friends of Immaculate

Conception have made provisions to

remember the parish in their estate plan-

ning. As Christians we realize that we are not owners of

material assets, but merely caretakers or stewards of the

Lord’s assets. This is ever so important to the future of our

parish! Such gifts will continue to support the parish and

its ministries long after the donor is gone. Each person's

generosity is very much appreciated and is an example for

others to follow. Please contact Fr. Daniel for more infor-

mation on how you can include Immaculate Conception in

your estate planning.

NOTICIAS Y ANUNCIOS PARROQUIALES

Healthier Priests. Stronger Communities.

Funds from this special collection are managed by the Clergy Health and Retirement Trust – an independently managed trust with a majority lay board of trustees. The funds are used for the sole benefit of active and senior priests in good standing.

The strength and vibrancy of our communities depend largely on the welfare of our priests who tirelessly serve others from all walks of life.

Powerful examples of strength in community are visible across 144 cities and towns of the Archdiocese of Boston. The roots of these communities can be traced back to the work of our priests.

Pine Street Inn: A Boston priest was one of the original founders of Pine Street Inn, which provides shelter and emergency services for nearly 2,000 homeless men and women in the Boston area every day.

Cor Unum: Started by a Lawrence pastor, Cor Unum (“One Heart”) food pantry serves more than 250,000 meals annually to poverty-stricken families in Lawrence.

Addiction Support for Families: A Boston priest’s expertise in addiction and recovery has been instrumental for organizations helping families and individuals in the grips of addiction.

Rostro de Cristo: Efforts to help the poor on the margins of Ecuador’s largest city is hard work, except for those who have been inspired by a Boston priest who started Rostro de Cristo, an organization based in Boston that lives the Gospel and serves the poor.

It’s simple: healthier priests mean stronger communities. Please support clergytrust.org
