“In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am, you also may be.” John 14:2-3

“I will come back again and take you to myself, so that where I am you also may be.” Now this is something to look forward to: being where Jesus is, in heaven. What could be more satisfying, more beautiful, more perfect? Heaven is where we find the “fulfillment of the deepest human long-ings” (Catechism of the Catholic Church §1024). Our longing for love that doesn’t fail, our longing for peace that doesn’t end, our longing for happiness that doesn’t fade away-all of this is awaiting us. Today, Jesus tells his disciples that he is going to “prepare a place” for them,. We are his disciples too, and so we also have a spot in the “Father’s house.” But we need to make sure we know how to get there! This is what Thomas the (doubting) Apostle asked about in today’s Gospel: “How can we know the way?” Thomas wants to be sure about things. He is looking for a kind of spiritual roadmap to give him the confidence, that he’s on the right path. This is what we have in Jesus. He responds to Thomas’ question with these words: “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” In other words, Jesus is like an infallible heavenly GPS. He gets us where we want to go. By heeding Christ’s teachings and following his example, we can navigate through the many competing “ways” that vie for our attention. But more than just serving as a spiritual signpost, Jesus wants us to be in a real relation-ship with him. As he asks Philip today, “Have I been with you for so long a time and you still do not know me?” If Je-sus himself is the way, then it is only by truly knowing him that we will find our way to heaven where we will finally behold him face-to- face.

In an effort to reach out to our brothers and sisters who speak Spanish and are not able to attend Sunday Mass at their parish due to illness, age, or other issues, the Archdiocese offers the transmis-sion of the Sunday Mass in Spanish. This is an archdiocesan minis-try offered in collaboration with the Office of Hispanic Ministry and the Office of Worship and Christian Initiation. The Spanish TV Mass airs every Sunday at 6:30 am on Channel 13 and 5:00 p.m. on Univision Channel 14.

“The root reason for human dignity lies in man’s call to communion with God. From the very circumstances of his origin, man is already invited to converse with God. For man would not exist were he not created by God’s love and constantly preserved by it; and he cannot live fully according to truth unless he freely acknowledges that love and devotes himself to his Creator. —Gaudium et Spes, 19 “La razon mas alta de la dignidad humana consiste en la vocacion del hombre a la union con Dios. Desde su mismo nacimiento, el hombre es invitado al dialogo con Dios. Existe pura y simplemente por el amor de Dios, que lo creo, y por el amor de Dios, que lo con-serva. Y solo se puede decir que vive en la plenitude de la verdad cuando reconoce libremente ese amor y se confia por entero a su Creador”. —Gaudium et spes, 19
