LITURGY OF THE WORD Psalm Response

Gospel Acclamation

Nicene Creed I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made; For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,

(all bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

Song of Praise: As the Deer Longs 1. As the deer longs for flowing streams, So longs my soul for you, O God. My soul does thirst for the living God. When shall I come to see your face?

2. My tears have fed me day and night, while some have said: “Where is your God?” But I recall as my soul pours dry, the days of praise within your house.

3. Why do I mourn and toil within, when it is mine to hope in God? I shall again sing praise to him. He is my help, he is my God.

Aclamación del Evangelio Page 5

Aleluya, aleluya, aleluya.

Lord, hear our prayer.

Pastor’s Page Page 7 MARY XIV

Last week, I wrote on Mary’s title Mother of God, the feast of which is January 1st. The week before Christmas I preached on Mary’s perpetual virginity, and two weeks before that, on December 8th, I wrote on the Immaculate Conception. These are three of the four Marian doctrines, that is, declared and defined as truths of the faith by the teaching authority of the Church. The fourth Marian doctrine is the Assumption.

Belief in the assumption of the Blessed Mother, body and soul into heaven at the end of her earthly life, is almost as old as Christianity itself. We find references to it in second-century writings in the East (the Eastern Orthodox share our belief in the Assumption) and liturgical celebrations of the feast date at least to the fifth century. For all its antiquity, the Assumption was formally defined only in the twentieth century, by Pius XII, in November, 1950.

The doctrine itself is quite simple: the Church teaches that the Blessed Mother, at the end of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heaven, where she reigns as queen of creation, alongside her divine Son. The theological underpinnings of the doctrine have to do with our belief in Mary’s sinlessness, from the moment of her conception. I haven’t time or space here to examine the theological propositions which support Our Lady’s Assumption. But if we remember that the wages of sin is death, and that Mary never sinned, it would follow that she might be taken up bodily into eternal life at the end of her sojourn here on earth.

The Church leaves open the question of whether Mary died. I was once speaking on this matter with a seminary professor and I said that I thought it likely that Mary would have wanted to die, because her Son had, because all of her children (that is, all of redeemed humanity) must. My professor, a very good Marian priest, said that he thought it likely that Mary would have done whatever her Son asked, and if that meant coming to heaven without experiencing death, so be it.

I could hardly argue! The question is an open one. IHM Pray for us Father Jim

MARIA XIV

Stewardship Corner

Our Baptism, like the Lord’s is a consecration to service. The bishops’ pastoral on stewardship remind us that “...there is a

fundamental obligation arising from the sacrament of baptism that people place their gifts, their resources—their selves—at God’s

service in and through the Church.”.

URGENT NEED Share- a- Mass Ministry

We are in urgent need for a volunteer driver to bring a couple who lives in Sommerset III to Mass on Sundays. The couple is bilingual, so any Mass is fine. We are searching for drivers living near Deer Valley/Hillcrest in Antioch. Please call Richard Nahm at 925.240.9885.

“BIRTHRIGHT BABY BOTTLE FUNDRAISER” The IHM Knights of Columbus are pleased to announce the annual Birthright Baby Bottle Fundraiser. Birthright of Brent-wood is a Pro-Life crises pregnancy counseling and support center located in downtown Brentwood. It is a volunteer organi-zation helping approx. 500-600 women and families annually. It provides free confidential pregnancy testing, counseling, family mediation, assistance with medical and legal housing need and baby clothing and other supplies.

On January 25 and 26, the Knights’ members and Birthright volunteers will be handing out “baby bottles” after each Mass at IHM. Take one or more and fill it with coins and return it to IHM at a mass or drop off full bottles at the Church office during the month of February.

We would like to thank the parishioners of IHM for their past contributions and hope that once again they support our Pro-Life mission in the East Bay.
