Minister’s Monthly Message: April/May 2016
Spiritual Spring Cleaning Create in me a clean heart, O God.
—Psalm 51:10
In the Northern Hemisphere—despite our recent snowstorm—the season of spring is here. Not only are we likely to be done with the colder weather and snow for a while, grass will begin to turn from brown to green. Trees will begin budding. Annual flowers will begin popping up. Certain species of birds are returning from their southern vacations. We usually associate spring with new life.
Some people also associate spring with cleaning. Our houses have been closed up tight all winter, and so we feel the urge to open the windows and let in some fresh air and sunlight. But when we do, maybe we notice all the dirt and grime that has built up over the winter. Dust bunnies have been multiplying in corners that haven’t seen much light for a while. The floors of our garages are caked with salt residue from our cars. Seeing all this dirt we can feel the need to clean.
King David once asked God to help him with his cleaning, Create in me a clean heart, O God (Ps 51:10). David wasn’t asking God to help him live a more healthful life so that he could avoid clogged arteries and poor health. The heart disease he wanted to avoid was caused by the dirt that all of us have in our lives, that dirt of sin. This filth is in each of us, and if it’s not cleaned out, it’ll kill us forever in hell.
But God doesn’t want us to die eternally. He sent His Son, Jesus, to clean out our hearts filled with sin. Jesus used His perfect life and holy death on the cross as the spiritual angioplasty that repaired our hearts and souls. In baptism, God washed us clean of our sin and gave us a new start. He creates faith in us which trusts in Him that He’ll bring us to heaven someday.
Spring cleaning may give us a new outlook on life, but God’s cleaning gives us life itself, both here now and forever in heaven.
