Agenda Reasons why people immigrate here Common immigration myths Subtopics in immigration Statistics and narratives
Successful Undocumented People Jose Antonio Vargas
Well known journalist. He worked for the Washington Post and came out as undocumented in an essay in the New York Times.
Driver’s Licenses Contrary to popular belief, only students
that are DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) eligible can apply for a license.
Auto Insurance for Undocumented People
This process stays the same. Before applying for a license,
undocumented people still have to apply for non-owners liability insurance.
Social Security Numbers “Why do they all have the same social?”
Yes, some people do buy social security numbers. HOWEVER, in the majority of cases, this is so that they can file taxes.
“Immigrants pay taxes?! What?!” Yes, they do! Many undocumented
immigrants pay annual taxes through and ITIN (Individual Tax Identification Number).
“Do they change their name?”
No. In some cases, people may change their names because of marriage (like many people do).
Medical Care Some undocumented immigrants are
afraid to seek medical attention because they fear deportation.
Fernando Garcia, a 21 year old man, died because he was afraid to seek medical attention after being beaten up.
“Anchor babies” This term is used by people who are
anti-immigrant. The concept of “anchor babies” is not
very realistic, as children would have to be at least 21 to file for their parents, simply so that they could try to begin the process.
Newspaper “Labor economists have concluded that
undocumented workers have lowered the wages of U.S. adults without a high-school diploma — 25 million of them — by anywhere between 0.4 to 7.4 percent (Davidson 1-3).”
These are high school drop outs who expect to make great money without an education?
Our economy has forever been changing and with change we must learn to adapt.
We must be able compete with our competitors
Newspaper “there is a consensus that, on average, the
incomes of families in this country are increased by a small, but clearly positive amount, because of immigration(Davidson 1-3).”
“undocumented workers contribute about $15 billion a year to Social Security through payroll taxes. They only take out $1 billion(Davidson 1-3).”
Translators in Public Schools Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, 29
U.S.C. § 794, requires programs which receive federal financial assistance to provide accommodations, such as qualified interpreters, real-time captioning (also called CART), assistive listening devices, or other auxiliary aids, to people with disabilities when necessary to ensure effective communication.(Stark)
Taxes are paid by all
Claims vs. Facts Poor immigrants cost native taxpayers a fortune is
social services.“a recent study of immigrants in North Carolina
that reported that over the prior 10 years, Latino immigrants had cost the state $61 million in a variety of benefits — but were responsible for more than $9 billion in state economic growth.”(Beirich)
More untrue statements ¾ of illegal immigrants do pay taxes
*sales taxes*Social Security*Medicare
“The Social Security Administration says these payments actually help keep Social Security solvent because they pay in but can take nothing out legally. It's estimated that in 2005, about $9 billion in Social Security taxes was paid by people who filed W2(Davidson 1-3)”.
Green Card• Is just a permanent
resident card
• The legal process can take up wards to twenty years?
• “If I don’t (take the) risk, I’ll die anyway and my family will die of hunger, who wouldn’t like to come to the U.S. legally and avoid the fear of suffocating in a van, or dehydrating (in the desert), getting bitten by a poisonous insect, or killed… or drowning in the river” (Rivera)?
ColorLines Her parents, who are currently
undocumented, brought her to the United States from Mexico City when she was 7. As a kid, she didn’t understand the concept of immigration status. “I grew up in Arizona in a predominantly white neighborhood. I didn’t really know what it meant to be undocumented because I just went to school,”
“Mujer Because you gave me a
dream”
Graph
Four percent of the United States population is here illegally.
And you want all of them to leave??
That large of a number of people leaving could effect the whole economy.
“Over the past 10 years, traversing the U.S.–Mexico border
illegally has become increasingly dangerous
for would-be immigrants. Illegal immigrants face
kidnapping, murder, and rape at the hands of violent drug cartels
and ever more ruthless human smugglers
(Walser)”.
The Execution “In August 2010, 72 would-be illegal immigrants from Mexico
were lined up and executed, their bodies discovered on a remote ranch a mere 90 miles from the U.S. border. The drug gang responsible for the kidnapping and murders, Los Zetas, captured its victims as they traveled through Tamaulipas, presumably on their way to cross the border illegally into the United States. When the 72 people refused to work for the gang, they were executed (Walser)”.
(Valentina)
(Valentina “The 2010 Mexican Massacre”)
The Execution Nothing but respect for individuals who would risk their lives
to offer their family a promising future.
Pay thousands of dollars for something that is never guaranteed.
Personal ExperienceMy father came to the United States illegally when he was only 15 years
old.
Loosing ties with family Foreign Country Not knowing the language No where to stay Not knowing what to expect Never seeing your love ones again
Dream Act Provides undocumented individuals who have gradated from
a high school or have a GED with a chance of continuing their studies.
Great idea. These kids are trying to better their education thus providing our
future with more highly skilled and educated individuals.
Thus boosts our economy in the United States.
Offers young individuals a chance to succeed. Given it wasn’t their choice to come to the United States when they were young.
