Imperfect –ar Verbs

(past tense verbs)

• Like the preterite, imperfect verbs are past tense verbs.

• However, they have a different set of endings than the preterite.

• For example: (first verb on page)

• Hablar = to speak

• To say I spoke, drop the –ar and add aba

• Yo hablaba

• You (inf) spoke ends in abas

• Tú hablabas

• He, she, or you (formal) spoke

ends in aba

• Él hablaba, ella hablaba, ud. hablaba

• We spoke ends in abamos

• Nosotros hablabamos

• They or you (plural) spoke ends in aban

• Ellos hablaban, uds. hablaban

• Put the following verbs in your verb book and then complete the chart using the new endings for imperfect verbs:

• Llamar = to call• Tomar = to take, eat• Tocar = to play (inst)• Sacar = to get• Bailar = to dance• Esquiar = to ski• Mandar = to send• Entrar = to enter• Descolgar = to hang

up• Terminar = to end• Jugar = to play (Sp)

• Apagar = to turn off• Regresar = to return• Llegar = to arrive• Estar = to be• Caminar = to walk• Usar = to use• Escuchar = to listen• Trabajar = to work• Contestar = to

answer• Sonar= to ring• Andar = to walk
