TERM 1 2020 DIARY DATES
Introducing…
Christie Downs Primary School’s ‘Class of 2020’ Seniors,
The lead students have decided on some goals for the year. One of which is to set a
wonderful example for the rest of the school to follow. They also aim to be role
models and show all of the school values throughout the year.
The senior students have many great opportunities to grow as individuals and as a
community this year. Many of the students will take part in Project Enterprise as well
as City School which provides students with authentic experiences in workplace
environments.
The graduating students of 2020 will also have the opportunity to celebrate their time
spent at primary school and transition to high school through a Graduation
Celebration. The year 7 students will have the opportunity to include their ideas and
voice in the organisation of the celebration. As 2020 is the final year of primary school
for the year 7s, some of the students
have also designed a print to go on the
back of a year 7 t-shirt as memorabilia
of their time at Christie Downs Primary
School.
Students and Teachers alike are looking
forward to all the amazing and exciting
opportunities that lie ahead for 2020.

Marine Life Banksia 5
Our class had some questions about fish. Hannah
wanted to know what a fish felt like and Sophie
wanted to know does a fish eat shark? Emily
wanted to know how a fish swims.
We were very lucky to get a fish donated to us from
Jacko’s Fish on Beach Road for us to look at closely.
So a big thank you to them from Banksia 5.
Sascha Boothey - Class Teacher .
I would like to introduce myself, my name is Rachel and I
have been appointed the new Chairperson of our school
Governing Council for 2020, taking over from our 2019
Chairperson, the dedicated Vicky Rawlings, who will be
staying on as our Chair of Fundraising. We would all like to
extend our sincere thanks to Vicky for her
appointment.
I am also pleased to announce that Joanne Betts will be
joining us as our new Deputy Chair for 2020 and
Nancy Barclay has been reappointed as Staff
Representative. I’m glad to be given the opportunity to
work closely with our staff and families to continue to
make our school a friendly, supportive, productive and
safe environment for our children.
The team are already busy organising events for the year
ahead and details will be passed along to families once
they are finalised.
If any parents or caregivers would like to have a chat to
raise any ideas, suggestions or concerns to the Governing
Council please feel free to contact
me via the front
office.

Lilly Pilly 1 students have had a busy and exciting start to the school year! We have especially
enjoyed our morning literacy blocks, where students access literacy through play,
phonological awareness/phonics groups, buddy reading, writing groups and spelling. Lilly Pilly 1 has
especially enjoyed our buddy reading lessons with Banksia 3 (Mr D’s year 6/7 class). During this time,
buddy partners begin their lesson with a conversation with at least 5
interactions back and fourth which is called ‘Strive for 5.’ The
partners then practise sight words together and then listen to each
other.
The year 6/7 buddies are in charge of asking
the little buddies questions to
improve their comprehension. We have
really enjoyed reading with the big
buddies and it has also lead to positive
friendships in the yard. Here are some
photos of us engaged in buddy reading.

Buddy Reading
Science this term is being shared between two teachers,
Amy Nagesh works Mondays-Wednesdays and Thys Byrt is
in Thursdays and Fridays. Thys Byrt will then be teaching
Science for the rest of the year.
This term the area of Science we are focusing on is Biology.
With Mrs Nagesh, Daniel and Nathan’s classes are looking
at animal adaptions, ecosystems and the impact that
human beings have had on our environment. Andrea’s,
Courtney’s, Adam’s, Sascha’s and Nikki’s classes are
exploring animal lifecycles and will be looking at prehistoric
animals later in the term, while Bec’s, Cassie’s, Deidre’s and
Nancy’s classes are exploring animal habitats
It has been great to see the children settling into their new
routines and getting to know
so many new personalities
and interests!

Science in 2020
What a great start of the year for the students in Jacaranda 1, quickly settling into their
new learning space and establishing new routines. The students were excited to find
out that we have a class pet, Lady Olga. Lady Olga is a bearded dragon and is 6 years
old.
During the week students help give Lady Olga a bath; we are learning to be gentle, to
hold her properly and to dry her off. After her bath the students are excited to watch
her explore the classroom or outside in our courtyard.
Our favourite thing to do is to feed her; so far we have found out that she loves to eat
raspberries, apples, alfalfa sprouts and crickets.
Here are some photos of us taking care of Lady Olga.

Marine Life Banksia 5
This term Banksia 5 are learning about Marine Life.
We have read The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister
and we made our own rainbow fish and turtles.

Digital Technologies
We are thrilled to be offering Digital Technologies as a specialist subject in 2020. Students accessing this include
the junior and middle primary mainstream classes, and most of our disability unit classes. On Mondays and
Tuesdays, Alex McGrath is teaching Digital Technologies, while Danni Lach is teaching Digital Technologies on
Thursdays and Fridays. Classes are based in the computer room.
Over the course of this year, students will have lots of opportunities to develop their increasingly important
information and communication technologies skills (ICT skills), while focusing on the Digital Technologies
curriculum. As a part of this, students will be learning to use digital systems, develop computational thinking,
interpret and represent data in meaningful ways and create digital solutions; all while working ethically and
respectfully. Throughout the year, students will be working with a variety of computer systems and devices
including desktop computers and iPads. They will also be exploring robotics and coding. So much fun ahead!
Already there has been much exciting and impressive work being produced by students. Here are some
examples:
Alex McGrath - Digital Tech
Teacher
Students from LP1 and LP2 have been making
models of the hardware of desktop computers.
They have also been learning to log on and type
their names.
Students from JA3 and JA4
have been exploring old
and new technologies and
comparing digital and
non-digital approaches.
Students from EU2 and EU3 have
been practising their touch
typing on Typing Tournament.
They are currently working on
multimedia books on the iPads,
for our new listening station.
Students from BA6, BA4 and EU1
sorting images of digital systems
into hardware or software
categories.
All students in the Special
Classes have been using the Book
Creator App on the iPads to
present their learning via ebooks
and to develop ICT skills.
