2012 Homecoming Recap Continued...

On Thursday night, Alumni Services hosted the Great Bear Spirit Bonfire behind the Physical Plant. The event went very well and stu-dents were pumped up even more for the upcoming game. During the bonfire, the winners of the banner competition were announced. Alpha Sigma Alpha won the contest, with Sigma Phi Lambda in second, and Alpha Sigma Tau in third. Thank you to all of the groups who submit-ted banners.

On Friday night, NPHC and SPBC hosted the Homecoming Step Show in Ida Waldran. The event was massive to say the very least. Tickets sold out one half hour before the show was scheduled to begin, so Ida was packed. Six of the seven NPHC groups performed in an intense and energet-ic competition. After two hours of competi-tion and fun, Alpha Phi Alpha emerged as the overall victor. Delta Sigma Theta took second place and Kappa Alpha Psi came in

third. Many people left the competition saying it was the best show they had ever seen.

Saturday was Homecoming Day, which started off with tailgating on Bruce street. About an hour into the tailgate, the Homecoming Parade took place down Bruce street with floats, cars, and the 2012 Homecoming Court finalists. After the pa-rade, the festivities continued and expanded into a massive ex-panse of people down the entire road. The weather was amaz-ing, so people hung out and mingled for at least six hours. Peo-ple continuously commented that this was one of the largest Homecoming tailgates they had ever seen. (Cont. Next Page)

During the remainder of the fall 2012 semester, the remaining membership of the Sigma chapter are allowed to participate in philanthropic/service events, promote their organization on campus, and start laying the ground-work for spring 2013 formal recruit-ment. The Sigma chapter is fully ex-pected to regain all RSO privileges by the spring 2013 semester. If you have any questions about the Sigma chap-ter, please contact Scott.

Spring 2013 Recruitment

The spring 2013 recruitment dates are now available on the IFC Recruitment webpage. Individual organizations need to submit their events to the IFC VP of Recruitment and Scott by Janu-ary 18, 2013. If events are not submit-ted on time, then they will not be post-ed on the website or considered recog-nized formal recruitment events. Thus far, 43 men have registered for spring 2013 recruitment. If you have any questions about recruitment, please contact the J.B. Rainwater, IFC VP of Recruitment.

IGC

BYX President

Beta Upsilon Chi recently elected John P. Dickey to serve as their next Presi-dent. John will shadow the current President, Jesse Chambliss, for the re-mainder of the semester to learn more about the position. At the beginning of the spring 2013 semester, John will assume the Presidential role with a new executive board. Congratulations on your new position John!

UCA Greek Village Survey

Brailsford & Dunlavey, our UCA Greek Village consulting firm, will be surveying undergraduate fraternity/sorority members from November 14-21. The company will be sending a survey invite to the campus email of every Greek student. This survey allows every Greek student to have input regarding this project. By simply completing the survey, Greek students will be entered into a drawing to win up to 500 dollars in prizes. The grand prize for completing the survey will be a brand new, 16 gigabyte iPad Mini. This is very exciting opportunity for all Greek students to voice their opinions about the Greek Village project, so every eli-gible student is encouraged to complete the survey.

UCA Greek Village Survey

At 7 PM, the Homecoming football game started with UCA squaring off against Northwestern State. UCA dominated for the majority of the game and during halftime, the Homecom-ing Queen and Maid of Honor were announced. The 2012 Homecoming Queen is Lauren Canada of Alpha Kappa Alpha and the Maid of Honor is Molly Gardner of Alpha Sigma Tau. After the halftime ceremony, UCA continued to outplay North-western State and finished the game with a 35-14 victory. This win clinched the Southland Conference championship for the men and makes Coach Conque the winningest coach in UCA football history. After the victory, fans and players rushed the field to celebrate. It was a great day to be a Bear.

Homecoming was an amazing time and the Student Life Office would like to thank Alumni Services, the Bear Den, and UCA Athletics for helping to make the week so memorable.

Important Council Information

Panhellenic

Branching Out New Member Program

On September 24, Panhellenic hosted their annual Branching Out event for the fall new member classes. The idea behind this event is to give the new members a chance to get to know some other women of the Panhellenic community outside of their own soror-ities. After a few icebreaker activities, the women learned about National Panhellenic Conference guidelines. The women were also educated on various aspects of IFC, IGC, and NPHC councils in order to provide them with a greater understanding our UCA Greek life. Following the presentation, the women participated in a formal induction ritual, which symbolizes the start of their lifetime journeys as NPC sorority women. This year’s Branching Out group was very outgoing and fun, allowing for friend-ships to be made regardless of affilia-tion, and taking a great first step to-wards building a more unified UCA Greek community.

President: Kyle Brewer

Vice President: Dylan Doughty

Treasurer: Brianna Barbie

Secretary: Spencer Sims

AGC will be meeting two more times this semester to cre-ate a new constitution and bylaws and start planning for the next semester. AGC wilk meet on November 14 and 28 at 4:30 PM in room 213 of the Student Center. Congratulations to the newly elected executive board members!

Motivating the Middle

The Motivating the Middle (MTM) will be at UCA on No-vember 14! Are your student organization officers and members signed up? There are only 40 spots left! The MTM workshop is facilitated by CampuSpeak, the nation’s premier provider of ed-ucational speakers and workshops, and will be held right here on UCA's campus in the Student Center. For more information and to sign up please go to the Center for Leadership Development website! Individuals can also directly sign up on this website.

Program Description: Can apathy and a lack of motivation sometimes be a problem for your student group? Then MTM might be the answer. This workshop helps student leaders fight apathy and better motivate and activate members at all levels of engagement and involve-ment. Participants will learn the concepts and strategies highlighted in TJ Sullivan’s book, “Motivating the Middle,” and will engage in both discussion and planning to put those strategies into action. Student leaders will also learn how their personal leadership style inhibits or encourages the middle-third leadership strategy, enabling them to adjust their approach to some of the most pressing issues facing their group.

A Busy October for NPHC

The National Pan-Hellenic Council has been on the move for the month of Oc-tober. All of the chapters were prepar-ing for the Annual Homecoming Greekshow, but that did not stop members from making a difference around Conway. On October 16, mem-bers of the NPHC Executive Council (Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Al-pha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Phi Beta Sigma, and Omega Psi Phi), donated over 200 canned foods to a philanthropy project hosted by Arvest Bank and benefitting the Bethlehem House in Conway. They did not stop there. The Panhel-lenic Council hosted an All-Greek Highway clean up on October 22 and many of the fraternity and sorority chapters showed up in large numbers to help clean the Central Arkansas community. The men of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the women of the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. represented the NPHC Council and had a great time as you can see in the photos below!

UCA Angel Bear Tree

Angel Bear Tree is a UCA Staff Senate program conducted each year just before the holidays. As you may know, UCA em-ploys the working poor (individuals who work a full time job, but are considered to be below the poverty line). Many of our employees are in need of assistance to help make the holiday sea-sons bright. This year, 100+ Angel Bears from UCA employee families that will be ready to be adopted starting November 15th. Please come on out and adopt your very own Angel Bear and help make someone's holiday bright! Angels may be adopt-ed from the Torreyson Library, The Housing and Residence Life Office (Bernard 201), and in the Student Center across from the information desk.

Important things to note about the Angel Bear Project:

* Gifts may be returned unwrapped and marked with the full an-gel number, ex 12C.

* Wrapped gifts need to be marked with the full angel number and include a list of items. This will help parents know what has been purchased.

*All gifts must be returned by Friday, December 7th to Bernard 201.

* To best serve each angel, it is suggested to spend around $50 per angel.

So grab an Angel Bear or two and make the most out of your black Friday shopping adven-tures! Questions? Contact Ashley Lyon.

The Student Life Office is actively preparing for the spring 2013 semester. Part of the process includes updating webpages for each of the active fraternity and sorority. If your organization would like to update it's webpage, then please send all necessary information and/or media to your council advisor. The Student Life Office is asking that organizations submit these materials prior to the start of the winter 2012/2013 break. If information is submitted in advance, then this will allow our staff ample time to update each of the pages. Please direct all specific questions to your council advisor. Thank you!

You may have noticed that some of the images featured in our newsletter have a “Sterling Imageworks” tag in the corner of them. Sterling Imageworks is a company started by Jaison Ster-ling and his fiancé, Callie France (Alpha Sigma Tau). Collectively, these two have taken large amounts of pictures and videos for many Greek events at UCA since the spring 2012 semester. The Student Life Office does not have the funding to hire a photogra-pher, but we can offer free publicity to students who have a pas-sion for photography and video at our events. Knowing this, we want to thank both Jaison and Callie for their continued support of our UCA fraternity/sorority events. If you would like to know more about Sterling Imageworks, please visit their website or Fa-cebook page.

All Greek Highway Cleanup

On October 21, multiple UCA Greek organizations joined together in the first annual All Greek Highway Cleanup. The event was coordinated by the women of the Panhellenic Council and all active Greek organizations were asked to join. In total, twelve of the twenty active organizations participated in the event. Members cleaned up stretches of local Conway roads and major stretches of highway at the same time. The event went so well that the women would like to make this an annual cleanup event for UCA Greek life. Thanks to the Panhellenic Council for coordinating this great service event!
