• Currently, this business attracts a number of rebates and preferential as follows:

21 days rent-free period (Tema) and 30 days (for

Mali from Takoradi) rent-free period as against 7 days for local cargo

30 per cent rebate on tariff for transit cargo

10% rebate on port dues for transit

Speedy exit of loaded transit trucks to Transit Truck park for final processes

• Used to have 10 Transit Sheds but now reduced to 5 sheds to make way for increasing container activity

• Many newly developed transit sheds around the port

• Takoradi has 4 transit sheds of 15,528sq. m

• Single window clearance process

• Satellite tracking system for transit cargoes

• Allocation of space to Sahelian countries for offices and warehousing facilities

• Creation of a National Transit and trade facilitation Committee

• Implementation of ISRT by Ghana

IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

• Rehabilitation of access roads linking the three gates of the port- the main entrance , central and eastern gates.

• Installation of traffic lights to regulate the flow of traffic to and from the port.

• Undertaking port operations processes to ease congestion in the port e.g . Evacuation and transfer of containers, vehicles are done at night.

• The port has introduced electronic gating system to further reduce unauthorised persons entering into the port

CHALLENGES

• Lack of uniform implementation of axle load policy in the sub-region

• Low-containerisation of cargo • Numerous checkpoints • Inability of importers to clear cargoes in time • Delays at transit truck park partly due to STDs

and advanced money for drivers – congestion problems

• Seeking funding for the development of rail connections from port to hinterland

Long term Development Strategy • Expanding Takoradi Port to meet the Short-to

Medium term needs of Business.

• Expanding Tema Port to meet National Traffic growth, Transhipment and Transit Trade demand

• Develop a Third Port for Deep Sea Vessels to meet demands of National and regional economic development.

Conclusion

• Transit Business taken seriously in Ghana

• Many steps taken to improve access but there is always room for improvement.

• Plans are afoot to increase port capacity to ensure further reduce cost of doing business through our ports.
