“What does Jesus, Scripture, and the Church teach about abortion and the dignity of human life?”
The month of October is “Respect life” month. St. Pope John Paul II wrote a powerful encyclical in 1995, entitled “Evangelium vitae” (The Gospel of Life). It is wonderful to read if one wants to really know what the Church teaches about life issues and why teaches what it teaches!
Here are a few excerpts:This paragraph is about babies in the womb: “The texts of Sacred Scripture never address the question of deliberate abortion and so do not directly and specifically condemn it. But they show such great respect for the human being in the mother's womb that they require as a logical consequence that God's commandment "You shall not kill" be extended to the unborn child as well. Human life is sacred and inviolable at every moment of existence, including the initial phase which precedes birth. All human beings, from their mothers' womb, belong to God who searches them and knows them, who forms them and knits them together with his own hands, who gazes on them when they are tiny shapeless embryos and already sees in them the adults of tomorrow whose days are numbered and whose vocation is even now written in the "book of life" (cf. Ps 139: 1, 13-16). There too, when they are still in their mothers' womb-as many passages of the Bible bear witness to, they are the personal objects of God's loving and fatherly providence” (EV 61).
Concerning how abortion is a matter that deals with a person’s inviolable rights, the document teaches that we become individuals right at the moment of conception! Life begins at conception. "from the time that the ovum is ferti-lized, a life is begun which is neither that of the father nor the mother; it is rather the life of a new human being with his own growth. It would never be made human if it were not human already” (EV 60).
When Mary was conceived with Jesus, it was not said that she was pregnant, but instead that “she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit” (Mt 1:18).
The Psalmist sings, “For you formed my inward parts, you knitted me together in my mother’s womb” (Ps 139:13). In another Encylical that St. John Paul II wrote entitled “The vocation and mission of the lay faithful” he says, “In effect the acknowledge-ment of the personal dignity of every human being, demands the respect, the defense and the promotion of the rights of the human per-son. It is a question of an inherent, universal and inviolable rights. No one, no individual, no group, no authority, no state can change, let alone eliminate these rights, because such rights find their resource in God himself.”
Being pro-life and pro-choice is not just a political issue. It is deeply a moral issue. It is the problem of the heart. It is a spiritual problem. This is a problem that needs to be seen in the light of Gospel message, particularly on sin. Abortion is a sin. In such an understanding, we as Christians are called to be the voice for the voiceless because we are dealing with a degrading effect of sin. Let us offer our support to all those who stand for life, pray for those who are grieving after abortions, and be people of hope and mercy to this world.

Debes recibir a
A cualquier
Los in-
nuestra adoración y servicio a Jesucristo, El Se-
dalajara, Jal. México.
