Penang, “The Pearl of the Orient” is off the north-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Many opportunities exist for students to engage with the community through volunteering and other activities. Faculty, student clubs and societies, with the support of Student Services also lead a number of key community based initiatives that make a real difference, even during natural disasters.
My volunteering experience at the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Dublin was very insightful. It is a rehabilitation hospital for patients who have acquired a physical or cognitive disability due to accident, illness or injury. I spent time with the patients and had observation of physiotherapy treatment sessions.

Sports clubs and societies allow me to get to know to the dwellers of UCD from across the globe. I joined Taekwondo, Medical Society, Japanese Society and International Student Society. These societies allow me to build my social skill with people with different walks of lives. I also joined some taekwondo tournaments and the trophies that I won will be a sweet memory for me from UCD. The sports centre has a top class facility comprised of gyms, Olympic-sized swimming pool, sports hall, football pitch and fields. There is always room for everyone to get active and overall I never regret my decision to apply to UCD.

Getting into the PMC Programme is in itself a major achievement. My advice, aim far higher than the required grades, to ensure competitiveness. Also, if possible, take the opportunity to shadow a doctor, get a feel of what it’s really like in a hospital, seeing patients in the wards. Furthermore, attend courses in basic first aid, or at least get some volunteering experience done. Doctors are selfless individuals who put their patients’ priorities first and foremost, so it is good to get a feel for their motivation before committing to medicine.
