The last event is a RallyCross on November 11th.It will be on the newly graded area at I-80 Speedway.Joe Kosiski’s people have been hard at work gradingand leveling the area that we have previously usedon the northeast side of the speedway. If youhaven’t tried to RallyCross yet, this event will be agreat one to try.

On a sad note, we lost a longtime friend and formermember of Nebraska Region, Paul Brown. Paulstarted in Solo and then moved over to Club Racingin a shared Mustang with Frank Safranek. Pauleventually made his way to race in World Challengewhere he eventually won the GTS championship in2011. Paul lost his courageous battle withaggressive melanoma on October 13th. Hetouched many lives in our Nebraska Region. He willbe missed.

Robert Keith Hubbardwas born on March19, 1934 in Wymore,Nebraska. His familymoved to Kansas ineither 1938 or 1939He would later attendKansas StateUniversity graduatingwith a mechanicalengineering degree.On September 2,1956 he married hiswife Thelma in Colby, Kansas. Bob spent 4 years inthe Air Force.
He started racing in 1959 while still attendingKansas State University. His first race was inOklahoma in a Porsche Speedster. He would latermove to a Sardini Formula Vee and then to a MGMidget.
Bob would win 8 MiDiv National Championships. In1964 & 1965 in the Formula Vee Class, first in aFormcar and then in a Sardini. He would later winSix F Production championships all in a MG Midgets.His championships in F production came in 1974,1975, 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981.
Bob would find his way to Columbia, Missouri wherehe operated Autosport, an MG-Jaguar dealershiplater adding Truimph and Mazda. This is where heprepped his MG Midgets.
He was SCCA National License Chairman for manyyears and issued Al Unser Jr. his first license. Inthe 1960’s Bob became an instructor at SCCADriving Schools, a position he held for many years.In the early 70’s he started participating in theSCCA steward program in the St. Louis area. Bobwas a member of the SCCA from 1959 until hispassing in 1999.

Dan Layton and Mark Weber wrote a remembranceof Bob after his passing in the St. Louis Region’s“Wheelspin.” It started out like this, “Everyone hasa teacher that they remember for the rest of theirlife - for us it was Bob Hubbard.”
They would continue, “We were the politicallyopposite of Bob, but we would sit at the feet ofthis mechanical guru as he quietly put his race cartogether. We’d show up in the evening at the raceshop and get put to work. The lessons continued,not in any structured form. Bob led and taught byexample and sooner or later, over time, it all soakedthrough our thick heads. We learned there is nosubstitute for preparation, long hours and hardwork. That ‘good luck’ is usually the result of allthat and ‘bad luck’ the result of a failure to prepare.We learned that nothing is as satisfying asaccomplishing something difficult, that the secretof becoming good at almost everything is practice,practice, practice. We learned that the toughestjob-building a new race car up from a baresheetmetal body-in-white, repairing a big wreck-allbegin with just a twist of a wrench or the first bendin a piece of sheet metal.”
Rocky Entriken remembers taking a number of SCCADriver Schools and he remembers Bob, “I have oftentold others that Bob could teach more with a handsignal from trackside than other instructors couldin a 10 minute lecture.”
One of people’s fondest memories of Bob is his runat Elkhart Lake in 1980. After catching the engineon fire on Saturday, he came Sunday and gotpermission from the Chief Steward to start last.“I’m going to let you start because you’re a Nationaldriver with a lot of experience. So, son, get yourrace in and don’t try anything- you can’t win fromthere.” The Chief Steward told Bob. After the racewhich Bob stormed through the field and won, theChief Steward went to the pits and personallycongratulated him.
Eventually, Bob would close Autosport and startanother aspect of his racing career. In 1982 hewent to work for Race Beat in California. In 1983the Race Beat Mazda won the GTO class at the 24hours of Daytona and finished third overall. Theyalso won at Mosport Park.
The next year he moved to Raleigh, NC and wentto work for Team Highball in IMSA competition. He

helped develop the Mazda GLC for IMSAProFormance racing (Champion Spark PlugChallenge). The GLC went on to win the 1985Drivers Championship for Dennis Shaw and theManufacturer’s Championship for Mazda. Bob wasnamed the IMSA Champion Spark Plug ChallengeMechanic of the year.
During this same time period Bob working at TeamHighball helped to build and develop the first tubeframe IMSA GTU RX-7 in January 1985. The carwent from a stack of tubing to winning it’s firstrace, the Daytona @24 hours, in 30 days. He wascrew chief for four Daytona 24 hour GTU class winsin 1985, 86, 87 and 88 and a GTU class win at theSebring 12 hours in 1988 with that same car. Bobremain at Team Highball until the end of 1989.
Dennis Shaw remembers Bob from the TeamHighball days. “I had the upmost respect for Bob.He taught me so much. He did it in a way that Ididn’t know I was being taught.”
Shaw goes on to say, “Bob’s efforts and othershelped Mazda win the Manufacturers Championshipin 1985, 1986 and 1987. The car that Bob helpsus win Daytona 24 hour championships in 85’ 86’87’ and 88’ would win again in 1990. I know of noother single car that has won Five Daytona 24 Hourtitles.”
For several years in the early 90’s Bob worked forJack Beck at Orion Engineering in Omaha helpingto prep race cars. (He was a NRSCCA assciatemember during these years)
Longtime SCCA Member Frank Grover worked withBob at Orion and remembers Bob this way, “Bobwas best in his machine shop where no mill or latheproject seemed beyond his skills. As we worked inclose proximity he was always showing me his latestproject or providing a guiding light on a task thatseemed beyond my skills.”
In 1999, Bob was diagnosed with liver cancer andpassed away on June 2, 1999.
Bob was inducted into the Nebraska Auto RacingHall of Fame October 12, 2012 in Lincoln Nebraska.
